Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Venice airport to Corvara, Dolomites

Expanding this discussion to Verona Airport as that’ll be us in January, car rental appears great value on holidayautos, £250 for a VW Golf or equivalent for 9 days. Subject to the winter tyres add on. Just two of us on the trip so a Golf will be fine, some luggage can go on the rear seats.

I can see why folk opt to drive instead of spending £700+ on taxi transfers.

In 2022 I paid Holiday Autos £137.38 for a VW Golf for a week from Locauto at Verona airport and actually got a lovely black mk8 with a 2.0 TDI engine and winter tyres for free! Cool

So this year's prices are looking expensive to me!! Shocked

BTW, we got 4 of us (2 kids) plus luggage plus skis plus shopping in the Golf!! Laughing Laughing

Plenty of smaller firms won't release the rented car at the airport if you won't pay their extra insurance, regardless if you are interested or not or if you already paid for it within Holiday Autos' booking, according to Trip Advisor's forums

I always get excess cover from a third party. Never had an issue refusing the extra insurances with Locauto.

That's why I'm wary of going with a firm I've never heard of.

I used Italy Car Rent for a long weekend trip in February - picked up at Venice airport and drove to Cortina and back. They were absolutely fine

Travelling in December and booked a car with Alamo, i’m thinking of rebooking with Locauto. They are quoting £120 for four days -no options of snow tyres though!

Couple of hints that have served me well since starting to use them...

1) I've had my credit card declined with some of the smaller local rental companies. It usually wasn't their fault - it was Halifax blocking the deposit payment as potentially fraudulent. You end up having to phone Halifax to get the block lifted and the payment approved. Can delay you 30 minutes or so. This has happened to me at Venice with ItalyCarRental . Never had it happen with the larger companies - Hertz, Avis, Europcar etc.

2) Never book with your airlines 'preferred' company, particularly at smaller airports. Everyone else on your flight will have done the same, so the queue to collect the car will be huge unless you're first off the plane. Worst is Ryanair/Bergamo.

3) Never book the cheapest company - book the second cheapest (assuming it's not double the price or the airlines 'preferred' company). Same reason as 2.

That's not so clever though! Shocked

Were they actually trying to take money as a deposit or just block or ringfence some on your card??

I think it was just the security deposit - 500Euros. I've had it happen a LOT with my Halifax Clarity Credit Card in many places around the world. Petrol Stations, Hotel check-in, Car Hire and even flight bookings. Usually when they just swipe the card for payment. Can sometimes be cleared if you can get them to insert the card and I put my PIN in. As I say - IMHO it's Halifax being overly zealous in their fraud protection, not the fault of the service provider. Doesn't matter if you ring them prior to the trip to inform them where you're going and what you're likely to be doing - their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing, and "puter says no".

Not just one credit card company being “overzealous”. I’ve had repeated problems with American Express in the past. And now similar problem with a card from Citi Bank.

Trying to make international collect calls from Turkey would have been quite tricky had I not have a local friend who speaks fluent Turkish.

(The AE card was my company issued card. I’m somewhat glad I no longer have it. I side stepped the problem as a result. Till I got the Citi card recently, that is)
