Poster: A snowHead

Afternoon all! Am taking my son who is 12 and has only skiied a couple of times, skiing at the end of march for a short trip - 3 x days. Looking at resorts and flights etc, have found some good flights into Nice with a view to skiing in Isola 2000. However we are a bit apprehensive, as compared to other resorts accessible from Geneva for example, it looks quite remote. The road up to Isola 2000 is super shart hairpins, for quite some distance. However given the time of year we want to make sure that there is some snow as well. We were keen on Villard de Lans as it has a good set of green runs, but the height is relatively low in comparison. We don't want to drive more than 1.5 hours max 1 hour 45 mins really, and Geneva is too expensive to fly in to, so it is Lyon / Nice really. Any thoughts welcomed. I have skiied quite a lot, Clusaz, Carroz, Morzine, but fear these resorts are not the best as are all quite low.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

No idea how snowy Isola is likely to be at that time. But I wouldn't worry about the drive. I drove up there in late February one time (not to ski, we just went up to the top and had a coffee). The drive is really interesting - there is an AWFUL lot of nothing once you get away from that tourist-ridden coastal strip.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@mikeycharlton, hmmm, I don't know but I don't think it was fine last year ... (I know Valberg which is a little lower but close enough certainly wasn't).
@Kton2002, I don't expect that accommodation will be tricky so worst case go hang out on the beach in Monaco? More seriously can you easily get into Turin, Milan and do somewhere in Aosta? Or Munich (etc.) and train to Austria? Or even Zurich and train I don't know where?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks folks, am quite keen on Isola as looks good for beginners and tend to prefer the drag lifts / gondolas so hopefully it fits the bill.

Depending on what time your flight arrives in Nice, there is a bus service from very close to the Airport to Isola 2000. I think there are about 4 buses a day. Takes a couple of hours.
The best part is that it costs like 5euro each way

The clue is in the name.
The base is at (roughly) 2000m.
Isola 2000 is one of the highest (base) resorts in Europe.
Plenty of sun, snow, and snowguns.
You can see the sea.
Ugly resort buildings.
Twisty road up the hill is great fun.
Provisional open and close dates are Dec 2, 2023, to Apr 14, 2024.
Good weekend resort.
Do it.

Thanks for the encouragement
I don't think there's anywhere near ish to Lyon that is only 90 mins away in the car that would be as high / snow sure at the end of March. I guess there is still a chance of fresh snow at the end of march, but looks like Villard de lans is a bit too low to risk

The bus sounds a good idea. Not a road where the driver can really appreciate the scenery!

That's my concern with that resort to be honest too - feeling it is quite (excuse the pun!) Isolated....! I read about an avalanche that shut the road for 3 x days once upon a time. A rare occurence i am sure, but ease of access is also a consideration, hence Lyon and driving to Villard de lans is quite an easy drive and not a mountainous road up to the resort. I know, i don't want much !!
