Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Was chatting last night with @rdonalds as he dropped some touring boots round to try out, about the floodlights at Zell am Ziller, as I hadn't seen anything about night skiing, but the run down to the valley is often floodlit. Anyone know why? Picture below taking from my front door.

Arrived today. No issues with the storm from Gatwick early am. We managed to ski on Penken this afternoon. Snow on piste very nice with no ice or hard areas. Very quiet so not much traffic to scrape off the piste. Very windy though and expecting pretty harsh conditions tomorrow.

@swskier, Based on nothing at all, I've always assumed that the lights are on as "advertising" along with the lights on the gondolas in Hochzillertal and Spieljoch Puzzled

Spieljoch was closed yesterday due to the storm. Hochfügen was open with zero visibility at the top and lots of wind-blown snow. The storm is dropping now, but there's still a question whether the Hochfügen road will be open this morning. It's rained in the valley and presumably snowed on the mountain all night so I expect we'll have to wait until they've checked that the road is safe from avalanches.

After yesterday when we were confined to the Ahorn, the Penken opened but was limited to the area around the board park. Very few people out and we had the offpiste tree runs down from Penken to ourselves. Deep pow (lots of people searching for lost skis!) and much fun. Rest of the week looks sunny and too warm. Thankfully the wind should be ok from tomorrow.

Plan for today was to ski a couple of hours, then bring the dog up the Möslbahn and tour over to the Unterbergalm and spend the afternoon there with everyone as Mrs Swskier was working.

Wind put a stop to that as the Schneekar, Gerent and Unterbergalm lifts were all closed. There'd also been an avalanche over the summer road I was planning on touring along, and with the wind loading, it wouldn't have been a safe move. I lapped the Möslbahn black run a handful of times, then decided to go and check out Gerlosstein for an hour or two.

Before I even had time to get over there Mrs Swskier was sent home from work, so we decided to head up towards Gerlos and find a dog walk to do in the snow. She found a walk along the Schwarzachtal to the Jausenstation Schwarzachtal, where we found this absolute gem of an Almhütte:

We got there just in time for a quick drink as he was looking to close, before walking back to the van.

Lovely, unexpected afternoon in the end, and a nice route we'll be able to take friends to.

@swskier, it was a shame they closed that side and also the link over the top of the tux 150 lift. Meant skiing the same runs around the board park again. Got very busy with Christmas hoards arriving.

One bonus is no realised the Katzenmoos black (45&46) was open. After 8 years of skiing here we have only managed to ski this piste a couple of times. There are some decent offpiste routes through the trees and fields (mellow gradient) as well if that interests you ending up back at the lift (careful of the barb wire fences!). Unfortunately being south facing it doesn’t stay open for long.

Hopefully tomorrow is no wind and we can do a Christmas Day ski to Eggalm and back.

Must have been pretty heavy rain and strong wind last night. All the offpiste pow destroyed and lots of avalanche activity. Pistes a bit harder today but it didn’t freeze last night so cut up quickly. Was +6 degrees at the top of Rastkogel at lunch time. Sun and outside lunch/ drinks Smile

Bah humbug

FWIW good day up at hintertux as part of the xmas hordes*, frozen solid to start but nice later on. Always a bonus to finish down 1a as it's rarely open.

I only made it up at lunch time, so the pistes were trashed by then.

Really warm up there especially as I walked 1hr to the lift with the hund beforehand dressed in full ski gear!

Lap of schneekar, then up Lärchenwald, over to Tux 150er, then past the Rastkogelbahn over to Lämerbichl chair then worked my way back to the Schneekar and over to the Unterbergalm for lunch just after all the hordes had left around 1.30.

Tiring on the legs as it was basically constant moguls skiing in heavy slushy snow.

Feeling slightly chilly out the back door and clear skies so suspect it'll be rock solid on the pistes in the morning.

Mrs Swskier said first thing this morning as we got on the Tappenalm lift, "it's kind of nice skiing when there's others skiing around", usually she skis to and from work after everyone else has finished for the day.

By the time we had skied from Tappenalm to the 150er Tux cable car she was using all sorts of profanities and ready to murder just about anyone else on the piste.

Holiday skiing Twisted Evil oh, and the snow was sh*t

@Whitegoldsbrother, not at all, but it's noticeable how many idiots are out there. Like the guy that skied across the tail of my skis yesterday mid turn, or today, the hordes of people stopping in stupid places, and blocking exits from lifts.

Don't be expecting next week to be any quieter, we have at least 30% more bookings next week compared to this week. As of today we have relatively few Germans as many stay at home for Christmas then travel for Sylvester weekend/week. I think we are actually starting some new groups tomorrow due to increased demand.

I suppose the term is always about someone else. It just refers to lots of people. Most of the time that is us due to kids holiday timing but this year we got away early from the uk so enjoyed quiet slopes for a few days. Normally it includes the large groups of German town ski clubs in matching jackets or in the past Russians….i am sure I get included in someone else’s definition….who cares

Exactly this. Came up the Wanglspitz yesterday, to then head down red 66 back towards the Horbergbahn, but you couldn't get down the top of the run without pushing (metaphorically) people out the way as everyone had lined up in their groups at the top by the lift blocking the run.

Just sheer stupidity.

So as a newbie to the Zillertal, going on the 2nd Jan.... is Zell Arena generally quieter than mayrhofen or Tux?

@swskier, it was crazy today. Very busy. Was it the start of German holidays?

@Gaz_H, Normally if you have a car and park at the Karapitze gondola there is no queue but at the Rosanalmbahn where the busses stop and taxis you get queues. Busy around ski school times so from 9.15am). Once up there it’s ok outside of local and German holidays. The Gerlos side is mainly Dutch but tends to be a bit quieter.

@Gaz_H, busier this morning at Zell but by the time we reached hochkrimml we'd left the "hordes" behind. Skiied back to zell, would usually ski down 10 to the base but it's closed (looked skiable to me, obviously they've never been to Yad Moss) so back with the "hordes" on download from gondola mid station.

Despite what the real skiers would have you believe, it's not busy busy

No queue at the Karapitze at half nine, couple of minutes here and there to get up to Übergangsjoch but after that, nothing not even at Fussalm.

Biggest queue was Wiesanalm for the download. So we sat and chilled, took a beer and watched the sunset.

Actually the opposite, lots of Germans stay at home for the holiday days and come skiing after. We started lots of new kids groups yesterday and they were all German, earlier in the week there were less than 10 German customers in the whole ski school.

We have 2 friends here this week, the one i picked up from Innsbruck yesterday, and another i'm about to head off and pick up from Innsbruck.

Might try Zell am Ziller on Saturday, see how it fares compared to the Penken area. Dropped Mrs Swskier and Friend 1 at the Horbergbahn for 8 this morning, and very busy there again.

@Gaz_H, @Matrix,

I was up at Hintertux at 9am and yes it was quiet. Unfortunately it did not stay that way. I have never, ever seen a queue for gletscherbus 3 outside the doors, so binned it and took the Lärmstange chairs instead.
Lapped the schlegeis several times and did the valley run twice, second one to meet the family.

Snow was good.

Glad we skiied 1a on Monday it's closed already.

Ski down to the village at 4pm was entertaining.

Yep, it's godsend when the bubbles are busy. It means you can get to the glacier or the kaserer area without the use of gondolas.

Also a massive upgrade on that rickety old 2man that was hardly ever running.
