Rain all day in Morzine Les Gets at all elevations . Just about snowing in Avoriaz, but very wet and heavy. 2:30pm and things have eased off a bit at the moment and visibility has improved, I can see the top of Nyon and Angolon from my chalet. Still 5c outside, so hoping the temp drops before the rain gets heavier tonight.

The pistes have been surprisingly good this week, compared to what I was expecting. We're in Avoriaz and yesterday in particular was much better, as the sun didn't manage to break through the cloud, so the temperature stayed lower and there was less slush about. I don't mind the slush that much, as I'm on a board, but conditions are better than last year, in my eyes. Today had a more snowy start than I was expecting, it was coming down pretty heavily for a bit in Lindarets, but went sleety late morning and we called it off at lunch. It stayed as sleet for longer than had been forecast up here and then turned to rain in the middle of the afternoon. Snow is forecast to start again at some point tonight, but the noticeable thing at the moment is the strength of gusts of wind, so hopefully that dies down a bit.

Snow almost to village level in Morzine, so hopefully a decent top up from 1400m upwards
We arrive this evening for a few days…

We had around 10-15cm at village level here in Morgins, quite a lot more on top. Apparently the new telecabine's capacity limits have been found, as there was actually a queue there at around 0900 this morning. I think a lot of week-holidaymakers took the day off yesterday, with rain/snow, poor vis and high winds on top, so everyone seems to be taking advantage of the fresh snow and sunny skies this morning.

Really should've taken the day off - it must have been gorgeous this morning. Hopefully still ok by tomorrow, yr.no shows some more repainting in LG overnight (not a lot but enough to hide the grass next to the piste)

If you were in LG/MZ this afternoon and saw a skier going from Chamossiere to the centre (down Arbis, up Charniaz, then Gentianes) on one ski: that was my #1 having whacked another ski.
Luckily not the SL or GS (considering he has a GS tomorrow).

Great day yesterday, it wasn’t a game changer, but certainly a nice top up and plenty of fun to be had in the soft stuff. Plus everything looks whiter, which is always nice. Hopefully, for the resort, there is more to follow, to set it up for future weeks.
As @Chaletbeauroc, says, it was busy out there early. The colder temps meant that things held up better again, so even at the end of the day it was good fun. Some tired legs, but a cracking week, with only the wet Thursday afternoon as a slight negative, more than made up for by what it brought for Friday.

Les Gets side today - generally very good. Some surprising brown patches, which seemed to be aspect related rather than altitude. Pretty quiet queue-wise everywhere, which sounds like a contrast to yesterday in Lindarets where the Lechere lift conked out and left oodles of people trying to get out via Brochaux, then giving up and walking back up to the blue piste to find more massive queues further down.

Don't come to LG either please!
The Friday night top up was actually better than Thursday night's. Wish we could've enjoyed Chamoisieres in the morning, but there was a GS race to attend. But the fun we had there in the afternoon was enough to make memories for the whole season.
In other news I'll stop cursing my touring skis - they're amazing in powder! I guess it means I need a new pair of alpine (because touring bindings are a pain, let's face it).

@snoozeboy, I had at look back at my weather posts and yes I was expecting a lot more about a week ago, but quickly noted the change in pattern a day or two later, even using the non technical term ‘s***show’, revising my target to 11cm at 1300m . Beyond that I don’t think I made much reference to the NW getting a huge amount as all the focus was pointed to the southern alps.
On the other hand, Sham Météo, who apparently use real human meteorologists, called 60-80cm at 1500m at just 24hours out. Along with the usual model output, I summed up the range of forecasts as 0 to half a meter, which was intentionally not much of a forecast. It really is mind boggling how those very knowledgeable and technical chaps came up with such a forecast given all the model data suggesting 0-20cm . Not the first time they have been wildly inaccurate though, but it might be partly due to their focus on Chamonix….can anyone there confirm how much fell?
Anyway, I’ll tone down any future excitement so as not to unintentionally mislead anyone. If I carry on at all, there really is no upside to putting my analysis in public…..the appreciation received of course is nice, but I’ve shared all the limited knowledge/methods I have at this stage.
Then you have zzz and his call that conditions would be worse by this weekend…. The biblical rain on Thursday, would lead to less being open, by the weekend.
Zzz you also seem to claim that the official lift/piste map link posted was /is inaccurate?
I’d love to know what you base your posts on? As you don’t ski LG side, why do you keep talking about it?
And one more…..who are the “some people” on here that think LG side is skiing better than plan dranse?
I couldn’t find any references, sorry if I missed it.

Forgot to point out that tonight’s / mondays snow still has a chance of being the most significant of the whole thurs-tues cycle (I mentioned surprises on weather thread)….don’t think anyone will be surprised when the south gets buried, but we may catch a useful amount here as well…..Arome model has 20+cm to 1400m. It will likely rain on the lowest slopes, but thankfully we don’t ever need to ski all the way down…..let’s see, it ain’t over yet

Cheers @polo - I think you called it pretty much spot on tbh - we even had a bit in our garden in Morzine yesterday morning. Snow over on the LG side was as good as anything post-xmas. Just a short trip this time, but back again in a couple of weeks, so attention turns to mid-march (though expectations for that trip are lower in any case!).

@under a new name, yeah I doubt anywhere in the NW got more than 20cm at 1500m.....certainly not around here, strange call from them (as was for the next day, not spread over 4-5 days).Anyway, fingers crossed for tomorrow.....short term models not showing any consistency, pick a number and a FL.

@polo, sorry to not have answered you straight away but I’m on holiday far away from any skiing.
As you’ll probably know, my comment was in response to the discussion that you had with Ozboy regarding which resort, within two hours of Geneva, would be better to visit in the middle of March. It was not on this thread. You suggested Les Gets and Ozboy suggested Chatel. You made the point that 80% of the Les Gets pistes were open, which, whilst being technically correct, was EXTREMELY misleading for the OP looking for decent advice. You then went on to justify why Les Gets would be a better option than Chatel, based on the number of north facing slopes and the altitude of its skiing(!). You just don’t like losing an argument. I’m guessing you haven’t boarded around Plain Dranse recently, because if you had you’d know that there is no comparison in the snow depth or quality between the two.
Whilst we’re on the subject of snow levels, why don’t you read the Chablais avalanche risk report, particularly the part about the snow quality.
Enneigement : bon au-dessus de 2000 m, très déficitaire plus bas. On peut chausser les skis vers 1400 m, mais la vraie sous-couche débute vers 1600/1700 m en versants S.
What a bunch of pessimists they are at Meteo-France…..

@zzz, this waste of time could have been avoided if you would just reply directly (ideally in the same thread) to whomever you have an issue with. I strongly suspect the denial comments on the weather thread may have come from your strange remarks about “some on here” above. Can’t say for sure as no one has answered over there yet.
Still not seeing how any of what you said above is true, either from the thread you mentioned, or anywhere else on the forum. (It’s easy to see all my posts by clicking on the plus symbol near my name, then click on the name that pops up).
Here’s the thread with my two posts directed solely at Ozboy.
https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=5257588&highlight=&sid=8aff19256331d11f3ca3ae519c963796
In my 1800+ posts I don’t believe I’ve ever suggested LG to a potential visitor, like on the exact same threads that pop up every month. LG is already way too popular and can never be called snow sure, so how you reach all of the above conclusions is beyond me.
No mention of % pistes open, no mention of current conditions, no mention or suggestion of which area is “skiing better”, no recommendation of one resort over another, no comments directed at Op, no mention of snow levels, current snow quality etc etc.
And the whole thread was about mid March anyway. Am still mildly curious about why the Wepowder resort stats on slope direction (that I quoted) are different to Ozboys. I would say it’s better to be facing NW than NE so that’s another plus for Chatel but either way I ski there at least once every season and always have had a good time. I’m on record here for recommending it as a place to buy as it seemed relatively good value vs LG.

Back home in N Yorks after a long weekend - skied two days in LG as the folks we were with today fancied a Nyon/Chamossiere trip. The lower, sunnier slopes are in serious bother imho. The run connecting the top of Pleney with the Charniaz/Troncs area is shut - it was getting muddy on Saturday and today it was closed altogether - so getting to the LG bowl etc is a lot more of a faff, and I can see all the other links closing soon. The same goes for the runs down to Super M - Sunday was rock-hopper central. The run to Fys to get back to Pleney won’t last much longer and Piste B back to town is horrid.
But then anything above about 1600m and/or shaded is in great condition - Croix off Chamossiere was absolutely fab today.
Hoping next weekend brings some more snow!

@andy from embsay, I always considered Chamossiere to be part of the LG area, as geographically and connection wise it’s nearer, but all the official division lines list it as part of Morzine. Doesn’t make any difference, I am just in pedantic mode
Yeah those links were pretty ropey the one time I did venture over to Pleney / Nyon at the end of Jan. Nyon itself was in great nick (love the nerve jangling eagle platform at 2000m), but the main link over to LG was closed even then and hasn’t been reopened since, and as you say the alternative run down to Troncs is very low, even 3 weeks ago it was a mix of mud and artificial. Did not resemble snow as we know it.
I only remember LG being inaccessible from Morzine once before, but that could have been during the Covid seasons.
The early Mar low is coming in a little too far west, just like the one a few days ago. Keep an eye on ECM temps, looks warmer along northern ridge again (while much colder in northern spain, again). Another marginal set up for the NW…..unless GFS has this one right…..it has been so far off with FLs recently you really need to check elsewhere (YR, Bergfex). Still looking like a better cold spell is possible with northern blocking and SSW impacts in the first half.
