What are the weather models looking like? The forecast sites I’ve seen are saying there could be 20cm of snow to resort level this weekend, with another large dump likely in the following week. I know the following week is probably too far away, but does it bode well for this weekend?

Combe piste underneath conche piste at super Châtel closed leading to queues at coqs.
I think it's due to a serious accident.
Edit, reopened half hour later

@Timmycb5, I like to use this site which has all the available models at the top, adding more short term ones as they come into range
All precip should be useful snow to low altitude from now until tuesday, starting about 1500m FL and ending nearer to zero.
At the moment there are 8 models showing a range of 20-60cm, but I'd say the mean is around 30cm. Actually that's a conservative estimate, it's probably higher, but I'll stick with 30 as they are prone to being over excited, but no question some models are looking very snowy.

@polo, nice one
I’m not out for a few more weeks, but the prospect of lots of snow is getting me excited for it.
I just hope there is enough in Jan/Feb to last to my end of March trip too.

I think someone asked about the Pysae (Châtel bus) app a few pages ago.
It worked yesterday to get back to town from pre la joux. A bus showed up on the app that actually existed and I took it.
Today however, the app showed no buses connected.
Châtel/PDS really feels like the 1950s when it comes to tech. Nothing works. |
Update - the buses seem to be mostly, if not all online now. However still no sign of the pds app on Google Play and the reliability of the EV chargers in Châtel is rarely above 50pc.

Couple of really good days in PdS despite some weather challenges. The wind has been brutal at times. Rain and high temperatures have caused some issues to the lower slopes. Very spring like today. A few of the runs home would benefit from a top up of snow.
Higher up is still in excellent condition. Hoping the winds drop a bit tomorrow.
Le Local an excellent stopping off point on the way back to Pied de la Plagne.

@Innescal89, I think the village should see some snow over the weekend. Glad you’ve found Le Local - they’ve done a cracking job with it in the last 2 or 3 years since it was the Sherpa. Makes the walk home quite pleasant!
I think the winds are going to drop tomorrow - we have a mate staying at our place and he said it was a bit gnarly today up top.

Hi all, real newbie here…been a lurker for far too long
We’re visiting Avoriaz for the third time in a couple of years, & have to say, the last couple of days have been a real challenge! We arrived on Sunday, & Mondays skiing was wonderful, not all day sun, but enough sun to say we’ve seen it! Tuesday was very wet around Zore, but a little snowy to go too much higher. Today was ‘real’ skiing, despite the optimism of BBC, snow-forecast (& pretty much any other site!) we had very little in the way of sun, & the wind was a lot stronger than expected, to the extent that most lifts to the summit were closed early afternoon, resulting in ridiculous queues at Le Tour/Stade/Les Interacts. Can’t be helped though, the wind was probably a lot stronger than expected. Fingers crossed for the next three days, doesn’t look promising, but first world problems & all that
We’re staying at Pierre et Vacances Atria Crozats, which is a good location, & to be fair, the weather is making it a real mountain experience!
If I can just add, for all posters, your input is greatly appreciated (even from lurkers like me) I wish you all a wonderful trip, whenever you are coming. PDS really is a wonderful place!

Just to add…we came to Avoriaz the same time last year, & the conditions are infinitely better. Luck of the draw with bright conditions, but there is good snow depth throughout, so fingers crossed it’s a great season for the area, & all who are fortunate enough to visit!

@Jed’s, agree it’s been tough going this week and expected for this time of the year as the snow accumulates. Hopefully tomorrow and Friday morning will be better. Try to head across to Châtel Pre La Joux and Linga areas and it will be less crowded.

@andy not only a good pint but a cracking burger as well. The wind was literally blowing people over at the top today
@jed’s the queues at those lifts were ridiculous today. Especially Tour. I ended up giving up and did what @ozboy mentioned and going to Chatel. The snow wasn’t nearly as good but I didn’t feel like I was queuing nearly as much.
One thing that has surprised me whilst here has been the amount of rain that has fallen in Morzine. Been drenched 3 out of the 4 days I’ve been here. I know it’s earlyish in the season but is that normal?

Chatel upper lifts were closed this morning causing massive queues at PLJ but all were working by 11:30. The off piste was too crusty and in places wet to be enjoyable but did manage to find some good pockets. They decided to close Cornebois at 14:30 which caused large queues at Les Combes and TK Keyset with some opting to walk back up the Keyset.

Yep proper mountain weather. Mrs MHS had a day off so me and the younger youth headed for mossettes (closed all day french side) so took cases up to ridge fully expecting wild winds and lack of return lifts to keep us in Linderets. Encouraged by both mossettes and grande conche being open we found some lovely skiing on the swiss side. Bit of a risk as some mighty gusts at times so they could have closed but Ripaille runs were in great nick and mainly sheltered. Back over and onto ridge above Avoriaz and back to linderets and it was pretty chaotic with the sheer number of skiers trying to hide from the wind whilst finding decent snow to ski.
V warm and wet here in morzine but apparently anow in avoriaz. Hopefully freezing level extends down super morzine a bit as we have a learner to get addicted to this fun!

Quick question....
Looking at driving back to UK this weekend. Weather looking good (bad for driving!).
What time does the road start to get busy on a busy Saturday heading down to taninges? If I left at 7am would that miss the masses of changeover day traffic heading home?
Sunday is looking a bit hairy so don’t want to spend the day in a car on a snowy road…
Thanks in advance.

Hey guys. Always enjoy following this thread in the run up to our annual trip.
How are conditions shaping up for my trip beginning on the 12th? I’m looking at a few forecasts and all seem to suggest snow this weekend before drying up. I tried using @polo link above but not sure I’m interpreting that correctly! I’m hoping for good snow and a bit of sunshine.
I am determined to get over to Chatel this year given the positive reviews here recently but also Les Gets after being confined to Avoriaz last time around.

@kinger123, that’s a pretty accurate summary of how things look at the moment - colder and some precipitation over this weekend, then chilly and dry next week and into the weekend - but 12/1 is still a week away. Best scenario is this weekend’s snow enables them to get the runs to the village open (Piste B on Pleney etc) and then the cold next week lets them get some artificial down that’ll keep them going for the future weeks (torrential rain notwithstanding).
We’re out for the weekend on 11/1 and are expecting a cracking weekend.

We are out on the 11th for a long weekend too. Staying in Champery this time as fancied a change / chance to explore the Swiss side more. Looks like we couldn’t have timed it better. What a contrast to last year.

@patrick!, it snowed at high levels. Heavy rain below 1600m
Not sure we’re going to have snowmaggaedon this weekend but there’ll certainly be some new snow to low levels. 30cm’s seems to be what most forecasts suggest. As@andy from embsay, says, they’ll be able to make snow next week around Pleney and Les Gets

If you can leave early and avoid the Tanninges mess (and also drive via Mieussy rather than Cluses) then I'd do that rather than via Douvaine, which has its share of jams. Having said that, we start from LG, if you are in Avo or MZ then it might be better via North. Plus you can avoid the tollbooth(s) queues.

If the runs back to the village can be opened then that would be great. The FL does look to be consistently low for the next week at least and the front de neige looks like it could do with a dump from the looks of the webcam. Getting excited now!

End of my last day sadly.
Overnight snow made this morning very enjoyable. Freshened up some of the lower stuff which had taken a bit of a beating on Tuesday. Wind dropped and the sun came out as well. Afternoon was tough going as things got extremely bumpy.
Conditions are really good for those coming out over the next few weeks.

Quick question for those that know. Does the Navette still run from Morzine to Ardent past Lac Montriond? Thought there was one but can’t find a timetable for this year.
I’ve booked a weekend trip stopping at the Hotel du Lac and was going to just get a minibus transfer and use the navette to get to the lift and in to Morzine for food and beers but if it no longer runs we’ll have to hire a car.

Looks like the snowline stayed tantalisingly above the village (Morzine) overnight. The sexpond snowgauge ™ has zero and Pleney is still green at the bottom. Hopefully today and tomorrow will remedy that and the next few days of cold will let them make enough artificial to get at least Piste B open to ski back on.
Elsewhere it looks fabulous, with various mates having an epic end to their new year trips. And for sports (esp cycling) fans, Orla Chennaoui of Eurosport fame, has been waxing lyrical on insta about a family trip to Avoriaz.

Let’s hope so @andy from embsay. Looking ahead to next weekend it’s set to warm up quite considerably and even into double figures in the village. Is that likely to have much impact on the quality of the snow?

Looks like snow to the valley bottom in Chatel. Forecast is for temperature 1C or lower all week so anything falling should be snow.

Not sure where you’re seeing double figures @kinger123, but the ensembles are showing something around seasonal average temps for a couple of days at the weekend before dropping again (the graph is c1500m temps, so obviously a few degrees warmer in the valley). The Pleney side of the valley doesn’t really get much warmth in Dec/Jan - in mid-December when it was above freezing in the day the Pleney side stayed white all the time as it never sees the sun.
The slight warming next weekend (if indeed it happens - there’s still no real concensus) is still way colder than what we’ve been having up until xmas.
Anything Super M or above will be absolutely fine - just don’t expect to ski back down the front of Pleney.

Yep, I think Les Gets had snow in the village - that 100m of elevation seems to have made the difference.
She seems to be an Avoriaz regular - seem to recall she was there last winter too. Assume they drive down from Amsterdam with the rest of the Dutch!

@andy from embsay, closer to 200m higher and front de neige is W-NW facing while Pleney is E-NE, and a bit more sheltered.
