Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

And back to the subject of tips we used to club together beforehand and a mate would buy him a lovely coffee table book about mountains etc that we'd all sign as a momento of the trip.

I'm imagining that on a high mountain guides' forum somewhere there's a discussion of the best and worst tips/gifts ever left by clients.

@Idris, do you get any "benefits in kind", such as accommodation?

Current place (Megeve) we get a realy good lunch and the provided equipment is very good. The previous one (La Romme sur Cluses) accomadation was available for €100 a month, but you only got a Jaket and no lunch (no lunch time either).

Many of the Tarantaise resorts provide accomadation and pay a little better, because they need a lot of staff and its a winter only gig with no local permenent population to draw on.

@8611, I think I answered the question earlier. An ISIA Level 3 or 4 can also take you off to what I suspect is your definition of Off-Piste. You ony need the IFMGA qualification for "Technical" skiing which means planned use of ropes (or other climbing equipment) or on Glacial Terrain.

Flachau is very quiet this week but the snow is good and we've got a forecast for a metre or so up top over the next 48 hours, Should be a cracking weekend.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, that makes sense. What an end to the season, enjoy.

It is customary to tip tour guides as a gesture of appreciation for their services. The tipping etiquette for tour guides can vary (depending on your level of satisfaction with the services and your budget), but a common practice is to give a tip of around 10-15% of the total cost of the tour.

The famous guide our group use every year for 6 days (Zeb Roche) we sometimes employ in the Haute Maurienne (where he lives), where we give him lunch, but we also take him to several other resorts he knows where we put him up in our hotel. He drives us around in his quite plush van for which we pay an extra charge. We do usually also give him a small tip (around 25 or 30 Euros each).
The season before last when we arrived we found there was effectively nothing to ski in the Dolomites where we had booked so he drove us to Austria where we skied powder all week. Last season we just booked the guide and flights and decided the destination a few days before.

It's indeed considerate and practical to coordinate tipping and covering expenses for guides, especially in larger groups. This ensures a smoother process and allows everyone to show their appreciation for the guide's hard work.

@whentheresnow, I don't think anyone's referring to "tour" guides where tipping is very much part of their expected income (a few friends are "tour" guides").

Yeah, I understand it wrong. I was too focus on the title.
