 Poster: A snowHead
|
So, we are a mixed group of 4 - 1 beginner, 1 cautious bluesy, 1 reasonably confident intermediate and 1 returning skier, going from North Scotland and the budget options of Bulgaria and Andorra seem to be off the menu completely now.
We’re looking for a resort with lots of blues that we could either DIY flying ABZ to Geneva, or happy to package from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
We can travel at the beginning of Jan, Feb or March 2024..depending on best chance of conditions for the locations and cost.
HB package and pass (or similar) budget is 1k p/p.
Any more suggestions that we may not have considered? Time is ticking on the Scottish flight / package options as the prices seem to go up daily.
Thanks for any help

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks
We considered Bardonecchia and it went up £220 over the fortnight it took us to consider

Your budget is probably too tight for a half-decent half-board but you could probably do it self-catering, renting a car for the four of you from airport to resort. Too far to drive from the N of Scotland!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Sunweb is your friend but they haven’t released next seasons holidays yet. We went to Les deux alpes in Jan for that budget. Lovely half board hotel and lift pass booked through Sunweb. We then booked cheap flights to Grenoble with BA and transfers with Bens Bus. Worked out at £1k pp.

@skiseekers, Sempres ski do the catered chalet thing in Bardonechhia for under £500 in Jan 24 & will also sort out cheap transfers if it helps!
If Val Thoren is a magnet for snow, then think of the outliner reasorts. Hence Maurienne & Bardonecchia.

@skiseekers, Why is Andorra off the menu? You’d find plenty of places for £1km per person. Lots of blues and easy reds. Andorra probably isn’t too much of a budget option any more. You can get cheaper on Pas and a few places in Arinsal. Everywhere else is probably on a par with most places in the Alps price wise. Drinks and food while there are pretty reasonable though.

@skiseekers, you seem to be in a bit of a panic for no reason.
Back when I did TO's you either booked early season (September/October) when the offers were on to get some early business done or last minute (10 days or less) when they were trying to get rid of stuff. Not sure anything has changed in that regard. Do TO's even have everything set up for 2024 right now?
If DIY then you get flights as soon as they are released, then accommodation, transfers, ski school as required.
You seem to be very flexible so shouldn't be a biggy.
Didn't see too much in terms of criteria of resort - size, ambience, country, food. As you will know if you read the board people have lots of different likes/dislikes.
Presumably the beginner at least will be taking lessons? Anyone else?

All the main players have stopped doing packages to Andorra from Scotland, and to Bulgaria.

Panic is due to the ever increasing prices of packages from Scotland. As the budget options sell out quickly, the price is going up. We had been hoping to bag a bargain. The EasyJet flights were released yesterday, hence the timing.
Would be looking for at least 100km of runs and love Italy and food but that’s not a deal breaker. Not keen on Austria or Switzerland but no real preference apart from that. Happy to try less popular resorts as long as we can actually get there.
Thanks for any guidance. The beginner and returner will be in lessons.

If I search Crystal for 13/01/2024 I get HB (Hotel Splendid) Sauze d'Oulx, Italy for £679 pp
What do you think is a bargain? I'm not saying the above is.
Still think you'd be better looking in Sept for packages.
So you missed the boat on flights? Would have thought non peak would still be cheap.

Right now, Crystal have some not ridiculous deals from Edinburgh within the next 2 weeks, to Austria, and some stupidly cheap out of Glasgow to Italy & elsewhere.
Not what you're looking for, but just to make the point that last minute is still there
