Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ischgl - DIY accommodation

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I get the impression that demand exceeds supply for this resort.

It seems very much dominated by repeat German business.

I suspect the hotels may only be interested in weekend arrivals and departures

Has anybody experience of booking half board hotel accommoodation in Ischgl from the UK ?

I did try to do this in January, but I got virtually no response to my internet enquiries.

Latchigo, I have recently booked via a tour op in the end to go to Iscgl next year. I looked into the DIY option. BA flights were significantly cheaper on a Sunday so I emailed the tourist office and asked them to give me a list of hotels for Sunday to Sunday availabilityi in early-mid March. I got a response within an hour and a list of about 10 hotels. I didn't go for it in the end as the cost was about the same and we are a fairly large group and I couldn't be bothered to sort out transfers, money between us all etc. Basically I got lazy!

Start with the tourist office, I was impressed with the service I received.

Latchigo,

Looks like a great resort. Good altitudes for austria and lots of varied skiing. Why is there not more interest from theUK

johnboy,

I suspect the Germans got there first and have all the package hotels for themselves. It is not the cheapest Austrian resort either.

hayley t,

I will try a direct approach to the tourist office. I just struggled through each individual hotel. I was hoping for a midweek arrival/departure.

Some tourist offices want cookies enabled on your PC. I give those ones a miss.

I'm looking at Ischgl for Christmas this year for eight of us. I liked the look of the Jagerhof (isn't that where you're staying hayley t?). It looks as if booking direct and sorting transport out separately is quite a lot more than going through a travel agent, but Inghams don't have four rooms available for Christmas.

The closest airport is Innsbruck, but no cheap flights go there. I'm going to try contacting the Jagerhof and Albona hotels direct to get quotes for the week.

Latchigo, it's definitely not cheap, but everything I've read says what a great place it is. snowHead

RachelQ,

BA go to Innsbruck and is often 'cheap' especially mid week. You do not pay for ski carriage and you get newspapers, food, a free gin and tonic.

RachelQ, yes, the Jagerhof is where we are staying. It has a moving walkway to the lift! That just couldn't be missed. The Albona looked good also. One of our group is staying in the Dorfschmiede and having evening meals with us at the Jagerhof, have you considered that as an option? It's near to the Jagerhof.

The only flights to Innsbruck is via BA. They are reasonably priced if you avoid a Saturday, e.g. around £110 return, but that was for March.

It looks like an awesome resort and the only way we could match all the benefits offered by Saalbach (staying in Austria).

Latchigo,
I've skied Ischgl 3 weeks over the years, Brilliant, an absolute must.

On my last visit we stayed at the goldener Adler http://www.goldener-adler.at/, good position with easy access to the lifts via the underground travel way.
the food was very good although the wine list wasn't extensive. Interesting features include the health suite with a glass sauna, a power shower which is capable of stripping ski if not used carefully, a jacuzi with a mirror above (just a little porno really). The rooms are interesting in that the building its self is really very old, all rooms have been refitted. Good lively bar immediately across the car free street.

But the best thing is the SKIING!!!!!! great powder and of piste if you want it, even the std pistes are superb. The black runs under Hollspitzbahn are great if its snowed the night before, If it has been snowing go over there first thing in the morning for some excellent powder. The long red runs off of Gampenbahn are also great fun, especially after a fresh show fall and also any other time (interesting bit of off piste availabe from here as well). Makesure you go up to Galtur for a day, excellent fun (apparently Sunday is the best day for Galtur). The run down to Sanuman is a must although I've always found it a bit of a pain in the butt getting back.

I guarentee that after a week skiing you will want to come back and do the bits you missed, as well as your favourit bits again.

Try these people for a transfer from Innsbruch, they look pretty good, and 160 euros looks about right for a minibus (not per person) http://www.alpentaxi.at/eng/index01.htm.

Hang the expense, its worth it!!!!

Bob, I am sure I would enjoy Ischgl if I could get accommodation sorted. I will admit I was trying to book fairly late and I was also after a midweek arrival. Did you book directly with the Goldner Adler ?

hayley t, I emailed the Tourist Office in English and got this back:-

Sie haben heute eine Nachricht an "Tourismusverband Paznaun-Ischgl" geschickt. Die Nachricht wurde erfolgreich an info@ischgl.com zugestellt.

I've booked a couple of times direct, both times with the Goldener Adler for a whole week (it's a fantastic hotel, by the way). I did so via e-mailing them directly, not via the tourist office website.

You are correct that Ischgl hotels will probably only be interested in selling complete weeks, weekend to weekend. As an alternative if you want a shorter/different time period, try staying in Samnaun (on the Swiss side of the Ischgl ski area). I did this for 4 days during a half term period 4 years ago. Because it is less popular, they were quite happy to accept only a 4 day booking. The hotel was first rate (the Post), and in some respects the skiing is better because you don't need to join the afternoon queues to get back to Ischgl from the Samnaun side of the mountain. The downside is that there is not much village atmosphere compared with Ischgl, but if great skiing and a good hotel are sufficient for you then its fine.

I did the season in Ischgl in 1985/6. The largest group of ski visitors were from Scandinavia, there were at least 10 tour company's (now mostly merged into 2 or 3) who coached it down from Sweden,Denmark,Norway even Finland ( I guess they come by plane nowadays). These tour companys virtually had carte blanche on all the appartment accomodations. The Hotels are mostly occupied by Germans.
At the time there were only two English operators in town. Inghams & Bladon lines. On average they had about 6 customers a week 10 max.

Back then there were still familys living in town but now there is not one single private registered house in town. Money has taken care of that Sad

I read a few things here about Off-Piste. IMHO most of the Off-Piste has dissapeared with the huge develpment of the lift system. There is still a little left on the Samnaum side.

Apres Ski was the best in Austria back then & now it has beccome a Mecca . Very Happy

Latchigo,

yep booked direct. It was late in the season I 've had problems in the past with tour operators pulling the plug at the last minute. Pot luck I know but you can always try to pick up a transfer with one of the tour operators when you land at the airport (either english or scandanavian). I was going to use the train and taxi but the tour operator bus worked opk. Go taxi back the following week.

Thanks everybody. Mid week BA flights to Innsbruck are less than half the price of the weekend ones. So I will book a flight first and then email the hotels directly again; but I will do so much sooner this time.

I am happy with train to Landeck and then bus/taxi.

If it is no go I will head for somewhere else on rail network.

Is there not a public bus that goes from Landeck to Ischgl every hour or so ?

I seem to remember this being mentioned when I was researching transport arrangements.

Christmas booked snowHead snowHead I've booked for 8 of us directly with the Hotel Goldener-Adler which looks fabulous and is very reasonable for an Austrian 4 star hotel and we're flying into Friedrichshafen which is about 2 hours away. So all I've got to organise now is the transfer. I've emailed 3 taxi firms from Friedrichshafen for prices but no one's got back to me yet. Very excited already Laughing

Latchigo, The website (www.Ischgl.com) has links to the Tourist Office who can let you have lists of accom and availability. snowHead They will direct you to more expensive stuff - but, with persistance, you can find cheaper accomadation from them. wink

It's a nice place, and a large ski area - enjoy snowHead snowHead

Been there a few times for weekends and booked direct with the hotels. Best way is to send one email to all of them (BCC them) in one hit and see what you get back.

For Easter 2005 I got 80 rejections and one with space.. we only needed one hotel so that was fine !!

It's a bit of a bother copying all the email addresses from the tourist office site so here's a load of them I saved to make it easier for you.

Latchigo, I managed to find DIY half-board accomodation during Feb half term week for 8 people. The website is pretty good, and has links to most places. As RichA says you should be prepared to ask a lot of different places. Although the resort is quite German, we found that everybody there spoke good English. You can generally email hotels there in English, although I normally find that putting a one or two liners of pleasantries (or apologising for speaking English), even if it is bad/computer translated German will help with getting a response.

Last year (in addition to Ischgl) I went to several top resorts (e.g. Zermatt and 3v), and I can honestly say that Ischgl was my favourite with ocnsiderably better lift infrastructure, great atmosphere and a good ski area. It's not the cheapest resort in Austria, but it's still a lot cheaper than most of the 3v (e.g. €4 for a large beer, which is cheaper than most of the UK)

RichA, You certainly win the prize for thoroughness ! I know exactly what you mean about copying the email addresses. I also found it a pain going from the tourist office web site to the hotel website to check further.

I have had no response at all from the tourist office to my query mentioned earlier in this thread.

kamikaze, It seems that applying early and covering everywhere like RichA is essential.

If any Snowheads like Austria but do not want all this work, you can get sorted very easily in Bad Hofgastein. Hotel Germania is a very good 4 star handy for everything..... and you can pay the deposit on a credit card - no messing with bank transfers or any of that palaver.
