Any ideas on a very simple one thats a free/ v cheap download?

GoPro do one.
Windows Movie Maker is okay. iMovie much better but mac only.
After that it gets a bit more expensive but people seem to like Adobe Premier Elements.

The old version of windows movie maker (v2.6) is as good a free movie editor as you will get.
You can still download it and run on windows 8.
Just make sure to save your movie in 2 minute sections (then join clips together at the end) - otherwise it sometimes wont save long videos with lots of clips / transitions.
After 2.6 they dummed it down for some reason and has limited functionality.

I've used shotcut a few times. I wasn't exactly aiming to do anything world changing but it seemed to do the job fine

For a tablet or phone Youcut is an excellent free app. It does everything and it does not show a lot of adds. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
