Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best restaurants and bars in the alps

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just out of interest. These can make a difference to your ski trip so thought it would be good to have a list in here for people to scroll through.

My favourites are

Bars:
Le Bubble (Courchevel Moriond / 1650. Seasonnaire type of vibe but cheaper drinks and food gigs)
Ski Lodge (La Tania)
Rond Point (Meribel-best apres atmosphere (less try hard than Folie))
La Mine (Plagne 1800-best two apres GIFs I've been to have both been here. Good beers, sport on the tellybox)
Pizzeria (Le Praz, may now have changed names to Elephant but great pizza, good atmosphere, sport on screen and gigs later on. Full of instructors which is usually a good sign)

Restaurants:
Le petit chaperon rouge (Plagne 1800). Charming traditional decor, amazing food. My favourite restaurant on the planet.
Bistrot du Praz (Le Praz. Michelin. I'm not fussed about Michelin stars tbh, especially when skiing, but this place is a little bit more easy going and obv excellent).
Black Pearl (St Bon, Courchevel. Hands down the best pizza I've had. A bit of a mission to access but worth looking up if staying in the Courchevel area)

really hard to make this a single thread - too many resorts - too dynamic I fear.

However ... were dancing up a storm in Alibi in Chamonix last night after pornstars in l'Hydromel and B52s in the pub. I bailed early and managed to resist the temptations of the Bistrot des Sports as I walked home...

Chambre Neuf was the best I'd been to in the 90s and early 00s but they changed the layout and expanded the bar. Not so good when I went back about 6 years ago.

Change "best" to "favourite"and this might be a useful thread, as opposed to the slanging match it is destined to become.

My favourite for various reasons - Rose Blance Val, Cocorico Val, Petite Danois Val, Ronnie Meribal, Taps/Moose St anton

Les Arcs/Vallandry - Le Vache qui Ski

Schladming - Hohenhaus Tenne

I think it's inevitable people will turn any thread into a debate, so favourite/best, it doesn't matter as both are just opinions.
It didn't take long for someone to take exception though did it as I only listed French establishments. Laughing
Truth is, I prefer France and all my best experiences have been there, which is why I go back. I've done St Anton a couple of times and thought the moose and KK were hugely overrated, but opinions are like a***holes, we all have them!
I suggest everyone just keeps adding their favourites. Might be hard to search but doesn't mean there's any harm in doing it.

Looks like Rond Point Meribel and Moose in StAnton are getting a lot of love.
I guess anyone would visit the latter but if you're in Meribel, the classic Weds itinerary is Folie>Ron Point>LDV.
For the more daft, this includes skiing down the escalators, but I wouldn't endorse that!

That said friends hotel in La Grave, Hotel Auberge Edelweiss, has one of the best bars I know, of which there have been many over the years....

And @suggul in all the years of being in Serre Che we've still never been to the PC, though we opt for the Table Chazal in Les Guibertes.

I guess it depends on what you regard as being a "good" bar/restaurant?

Go into any bar anywhere with a good bunch of friends and it can be a great place but some bars you can go in alone, feeling low & come out feeling on top of the world (& vice versa)

I've been on 100+ ski trips to Andorra, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland & Canada.

I had some fantastic nights out in Soldeu Andorra when it was a smaller village.

Always found a lively bar in Austria wherever I went.

Some good bars in Italy but mainly because they were full of snowHead Any Capp in Sauze was good

I can't remember any outstanding bars in France other than l'Hotel d'Europe on the sopib, again, only because it was full of the slightly madder fraction of snowHead

Only spent 2 weeks in Switzerland with family so I can't really judge.

Only 2 weeks in Canada but found some ok bars.

I hardly ever do restaurants, I like basic food cooked well, Michelin starred restaurants would be wasted on me.

The Yeti Bar (no longer, sadly) in Chantemerle, Serre Che fitted nicely into that category. Back in the day, was one of my favourites.

Goaßstall in Hinterglemm is fun, as is the Hinterhag Alm in Saalbach. Or they were, 9 years ago…really must get over there again!

my favourites would be:

Le frog and roast beef, Val Thorens. holds a special place in my heart as it was the only bar we visited on my first ever ski trip in 92'
(went back again in 95 and was in there every eve as well!!)

after that the following would have been

Jack bar, meribel. (the original one, in the mid to late 90's!!)

le rond point, Meribel

Tsaretta, Les Allues (meribel)

pub le ski lodge, la tania

skilt bar, les menuires

miky's bar, Livigno. had a slide you could use to get into the bar, next to the staircase, it could get messy at the bottom if you had a few beers beforehand Laughing Laughing

andy capp, sauze d'oulx. good memories of dancing to madness every night when i was there

there was also an apres bar/nightclub in a hotel in breckenridge, but it was 30years ago and i cannot remember its name now, it was generally populated by brits holidaying in resort as the 'mericans didn't tend to go out of an evening (my experience for that fortnight anyway).
we were there that often, that we got to know the courtesy drivers which were supposed to be for the hotel guests only, and they would give me and my mate a lift back to our apartment in the early hours after the club closed, they also used to have complimentary beer in the minivans Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

weds nights were 1 dollar a bottle instead of usual 5 dollars, needles to say it was rammed with 'mericans

sorry my list is 3valleys heavy, but it is where i have holidayed most and also worked!!

I very nearly mentioned this place in the earlier post. Great fun….but with a little uncontrolled speed after a few beers, I seem to recall the beginning of the bar wasn’t so very far away Laughing

To follow Terry's Meribel theme!
The original Tremplin in Meribel, got pulled down to build the Olympic centre. Discovered Jean Lan there.
Never that keen on Ronde Pointe in Meribel.
The bar next to the old tourist office in the centre of Meribel run by the wannabee astronaut that sold the strongest Mutzig in the world!
Hotel Le Roc as a saisonnaire.

am sure it was called "le poste", for obvious reason being next door to le poste office Very Happy Very Happy

it was generally the seasonnaires/instructors/pisteurs hangout, i cannot remember the name of the owners, but it was usually the wife behind the bar and the husband abusing British clientele through the microphone attached to his throat, as he could not talk properly (am assuming it was throat cancer?), he may have even been in a wheelchair but my memory is a bit hazy (too much mutzig)!!!

am sure he was ex french air force, and i do know that any french military who were in meribel for ski training frequented there.

No, not Le Poste. But that is the place. He was dying slowly, so heading towards a wheelchair.
It was Le Capricorne!

Courtesy of Rob Smart's Meribel Unplugged:
Years before the Pub, the main bar in town was the Capricorn, which was first to sell the wicked Mutzig. In fact it was the only bar in town at one time. Sadly Manu the very popular owner died and it is now a very chic bar called Le Poste.

And then there was the Rastro in Mottaret:
Up in Mottaret the first bar to open was Le Rastro in 1986. It became famous in the 90’s for its wild Tuesday rock nights and most of Meribel’s locals would show up every week for the wildest party in Town. The crazy DJ Rob Smart (your editor!) finally retired in 2010 after 20 years non stop Tuesday nights. Tabletop dancing and the rest! There were actually times you could not get in the door as it was packed to the rafters. It was featured on UK channel 5’s “On the Piste” in about 1999.

funnily enough i came across a couple of youtube videos from Rob Smart the other day, when i went down a 3valleys youtube rabbit hole. he used to stick out like a sore thumb with his dayglo all in one ski suits Very Happy Very Happy

had a few evenings in the Rastro as well on those nights.

happy days Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

also, several of my former colleagues appeared on that c5 show, i may now dive down another youtube rabbit hole to see if i can find the programme

Great thread..
I must own up to being to a few of the places mentioned above.

But it really depends on the night, the company you are in and the ambience on the evening.

I've had some fantastic nights out in some of the humblest and unexpected places.

The one that comes to mind ... was one friday night arriving quite late in Damuls (A tiny village in the Vorarlberg).

There was only one place to eat, the bar that would serve us pizza.
When you are really hungry the pizza tastes the best, and when you have driven a long way the beer tastes fabulous.

At 10pm on the dot the tables were cleared, the lights went down, the disco boomed into action.
The 2 metre diameter dance floor filled with very happy people having a great time in the only place in town

France: I must admit I have a big fondness for the Folie in Val Thorens, despite its ridiculousness I’ve had two very memorable cracking times in there with friends. Other mentions to the Ronny and Jacks in Meribel, Loop in Tignes and my locals when working in Les Arcs, Bar King Mad and Red Hot Saloon in 1800 and Whistlers in 2000.

Austria: Goatstall in Hinterglemm, cracking place, probably top of my list. Also, I don’t know their names, but the umbrella bars at the bottom of the Gigijoch in Soelden and the bottom of the run down from the Ahorn in Mayrhofen.

Italy: Miravalino in Sauze d’Oulx, we used to call it the bean bag bar as it was full of them which were ideal to collapse in with a beer at the end of a day on the slopes. Sadly they’ve since dispensed with the bean bags.

For restaurants, Orso Bianco also in Sauze is my personal fave, it’s up on the slopes, always very busy, and we typically book a table once during the week for around 2 for a long late lunch and a few Barolos before downloading on the lift back into town.
