Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tauplitz & Dachstein

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Been hitting the slopes on Tauplitz and Dachstein West this past week. Both relatively unheard of in the British snow realm, great resorts. Tauplitz in particular has had some great conditions, not too busy and an absolute pleasure to ski - I'm a little biased as Tauplitz has been a haunt of mine for years. Gosau/Dachstein-West also fairing well, much busier than Tauplitz with some hefty queues at some points. Anyone else had the pleasure to ski/snowboard in these resorts? Hoping to ski Dachstein-Krippenstein next week too.

Tauplitz has all lifts open (apart from Gipfellift II) and all runs are full width with decent coverage - off piste is naturally not much of a thing at the moment, bits and bobs off Lawinenstein. Only run not open is the valley run to Bad Mitterndorf, but thats fine as you have to take the bus back up anyway! Queueing is minimal. Schoenialm a great lunch stop, top quality food! Hollhaus as always is nice vibe for a stop and has great views over the Dachstein.

Gosau/Dachstein-West has most lifts open, but many runs aren't open, very much white ribbon surrounded by green at the lower levels, but still decent width and machine made snow coverage doing a good job. Few pinch points particularly on connections so some queues are a bit frustratingly long. Nice traditional vibe at the Edtalmhuette for lunch. Off piste is non-existant!

@skilehrer89, my local ski area - DW.

Like a few places, it could do with a bit of fresh snow! If you’re there again, do try the Rottenhoffe Hutte and/or the Hornhutte (on the run down to Russbach) and say hello to Blasius, the owner - a real character and good friend. A very authentic and rustic place.

As for Dachstein Krippenstein, if the snow allows a valley run, enjoy! It’s an absolute roller coaster, 11km run, with some quite stunning views of Hallstattersee on the way down.

@skilehrer89, I’ve ski DW many times after skiing there back in the 80’s and have skied it with @Cacciatore, many times too. I liked Tauplitz although it was an awful day due to the weather firstly and then breaking my arm. Fortunately @Cacciatore and his lovely wife @Schuss in Boots sorted me out for which I’ll forever be grateful. I’ve also done Dachstein-Krippenstein which is stunning and most enjoyable. I’ll also agree with @Cacciatore on the Rottenhoffe Hutte and Hornhutte. Enjoy the rest of your trip as it’s great area.

One of my favourite places to ski is DW, it's just beautiful with the magnificent Dachstein as a backdrop.
One of my most memorable experiences was doing the Dachstein crossing across the glacier to Krippenstein. You don't necessarily need touring skis, I've done it on my normal ones and my touring ones. It's an incredible experience, we took a picnic and sat out although the Simonyhutte and Gjaidalm are always worth a visit, proper old school mountain huts. If you do it pick a good clear day as you really need to see where you are going! A fabulous day out with that gorgeous thighburning 11km descent at the end.
