Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Grand Bornand - no snow ?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all

We are off on our first family snow holiday and going to Grand Bornand just after Xmas for a week.
Looking at the weather it looks like Grand Bornand village has no snow at all, Chinallion 5cm and then you’ve got to go a higher for anything deeper.
So we’re wondering what to do ! We’re beginners and not really planning for loads of skiing, just a few lessons, some sledging, and messing in the snow.
Will this mean we’ve got to get a lift pass every day just to go and mess about in the snow? Is it possible to drive to Chinallion which is a bit higher without going on the lift?
Any tips appreciated!

@laurendan, Hi there - such a shame for your first experience as Le Grand Bornand usually has a very good snow record. Things can change very quickly too so don't give up hope.
The skiing is all in Le Chinaillon rather than in Le Grand Bornand itself (apart from L'Envers run back to the village) and yes, it is possible to drive up to Le Chinaillon. Plenty of free parking available so depending on where you are starting your lessons from, driving is probably the best option. The pisteurs are very good and there has been plenty of snow harvested and stored over the summer and the cannons were going full pelt when the resort opened so there will be runs open - most likely as a beginner you will doing a nice loop of 'Le Lac' which will be kept open and pisted. The instructor will know where to take you for your lessons to give you the best experience he/she can. You only need a lift pass to access the lifts so not necessary for messing about in the snow - there is a little tow rope area by the floria lift which is free and depending on how young your kids are there is also a nice little area by the base of the Charmieux lift where they could play in the snow.

@loatie - thank you that’s great advice and puts our mind at rest ! Fingers crossed for a good snow dumping in GB soon !

There's probably also a free ski bus that will run between GB and Chinaillon to save taking the car.

@kettonskimum, Yes - good point especially if @laurendan, is going over New Year when parking may be tricky.
