I didn't mention that the coffee at the end of the meal was 2.30 making the whole meal 20.30. Euro.
Iok it was more than my last trips to kalymnos and bratislava, but I'm quite OK with these prices.

Accommodation next to slopes?
Love skiing in Italy and did so in the last couple of years. Always end-up spending the same budget for equivalent service level. Even with previously ski-for-free (skipass included if staying at certain hotels) the week spend for Jan was the same as same week in France (cheaper and more convenient accommodation options).
Of only comparing the price for a glass of beer, then even paying 5 eur premium per glass on a mountain makes 30 eur a week difference.

Price hikes everywhere no matter which country. For me, and the weeks I'm skiing, in fairly discerning hotel accommodation, Italy has much better value.
I've not pencilled in my usual Easter Arlberg trip as the accommodation (places I've stayed before) costs are a little steep. I'm going to wait and see. But I'm not looking at France, nor Switzerland, mainly for other reasons.

Not Italy, but I'm renting fairly high-end skis (Stockli) in St Anton in early Jan, then exactly the same skis the following week in Zermatt. St Anton rental is 20% more expensive than Zermatt, which was not what I was expecting. So yes, prices vary in ways not always explicable.

Back on topic (how unusual for me) ... luncheon in Maison Vieille, Courmayeur, IT today ... bowl of excellent carbonara, €14, litre of decent Barbera, €16*.
You do not see that on the hill in Chamonix, I can assure you.
On the other hand, you do see that in town. We like the Boccalatte for good, bistrot food, menu here, https://irp.cdn-website.com/0f27fed7/files/uploaded/carte-boccalatte-2022-chamonix.pdf ... prices not dissimilar ... but it's not on the hill.

I do wonder however, if part of the perception is down to "rapport quality-prix"? We do perceive Italian food to be generally (at the lower price points) much better than in France.

@under a new name, I think your "lower price points" comment is a good one. Restaurant food in France tends to be relatively expensive at the budget end of the scale (that sounds contradictory, but hopefully you see what I mean!), but prices increase less quickly than in Italy, meaning that there is less difference for higher-quality fare.
A notable exception being the French plat du jour, which is still commonly around €13-15 away from the usual expensive suspects (Three Valleys etc.)

@denfinella, yep, makes sense to me. There are a number of excellent restaurants in Champoluc: one run by the chap who catered for our wedding. It is exceptionally good in every regard but while it’s not crazy expensive, it’s not cheap.
Against that, I will never, ever, darken the door of an “Ivy” ever again. £100 a head for decidedly unimpressive chinese and definitely underwhelming wine

Last time I went to an Ivy it was excellent. Last time I went to THE Ivy it was OK, but we weren't there for the food
I tend to think Italian food can be cheaper because its carb and veg heavy, France more expensive because it is/can be protein heavy

My favourite lunch stop, coupled with Maison de Filippo for a protracted "soiree".
Courmayeur has way above class eateries, some half decent hotels (Auberge de la Maison/La Grange).
AND............................................. Bar Roma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always assumed that mixing coffee and alcohol was just a way of using up inferior quality versions of either, or both. Never understand why you'd take any half decent brandy or whisk(e)y and remove all the joy by putting it in a hot drink. Would ruin the coffee anyway.
Then again, I'm the same when it comes to desserts, or even mixed drinks. I recently tried a Rum & Coke for the first time ever, and nearly had to spit it out! Disgusting. And I _like_ rum, and Coke. But together it's just an abomination.

The best coffee in IT. I can’t drink sambuca on its own (it is terrible imo). A combination of both in right proportions - devine.

@dublin2, have a look at Esprit, they specialise in under 11 ski hols, with adults in tow  and do deals where you can get free or reduced kids places on certain weeks. We’ve used them and they are very good imo.

A lot is about supply and demand. You can easily get a good pint for 5 euros on the mountain in and around Berchtesgaden or Garmisch... But that's partly because for parts of the year you'll be the only punter they see in an hour, and most of the keen German skiiers have buggered off to Austria!

@Skifamily22, please tell me your thread is a joke? why is a pint of guinness cheaper in any county in Ireland besides Dublin, it's price fixing, Italy is cheaper because of a variety of reasons, but yes the skiing is just as good as anywhere else, but if you go to the more popular resorts with ski companies it will be more expensive.

Er, no when you compare apples with apples. Chamonix 11 month season, Courmayeur 7 month season. Courmayeur 1/2 to 1/3 the price of Chamonix for food and drink!
Famillia Supermarket in Morgex is 1/2 to 1/3 the price of Intermarche in Dommancy for fruit and veg. Meat is 20% cheaper and nothing that I can find is a higher price!

It could be to do with how much profit overall they make due to low quality in some top-resorts  . I went to Kronplatz during winter holiday and drunk 2-3 coffees a day. Last weekend I was in grand massif and over 2 days I only had one coffee while skiing because the quality was awful + 1.5x price of the one in Kronplatz.
When comparing prices for last weekend it was much easier to find a cheap accommodation 15-20min from Chamonix than in a decent place in Italy. However, car hire cost skyrocked last weekend it GVA.

I get the impression in Italy that the price of coffee is capped. It doesn’t seem to matter how up market a place is they never seem to charge more than about 3 euros. If that is the case it’s a progressive egalitarian policy because it means everyone can afford something even in the poshest bar.
