Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French toll tag

@JP Wolf, I’m with Bip&Go and have just been offered a second tag on the same account for a 25% discount off the purchase price. I don’t need one but 2 tags on the same account would only mean 1 monthly activation fee I presume. Maybe Emovis will do the same thing but they certainly don’t have a reputation for being the cheapest
Ahh - thanks for that @rdsweb - nice idea - will check if Emovis have similar offer... we have been with them for ca. 10 years now - at the time we went with them they seemed to be the path of least resistance for UK billing.

@robs1's point about a hire car - I can't recall now - but is the doofer associated with a particular car or can you swap between? The glue on ours has come loose - combination of car standing in the sun and having to remove it for a replacement windscreen. So while we've reattached it, was thinking there' no need real need for a permanent solution - and if can use in a occasional hire car that might be an added bonus.

FYI - for those, like me and @Timc, who do have that nervousness at the first French toll, I've reduced the stress this year as a by-product of travelling the M6 toll road a few weeks ago. "Tag not recognised" comes up on the screen as you go to pay - which tells me it is at least being read!

The emovis tag isn't connected to a car, we used it on a old banger we used on a rally and on a hire car for a last minute ski trip in march, also we used one where the battery was getting to the end on another car in the banger rally, we just had one bill with each tags recorded route seperately

AIUIin France the tags didn't have to be linked to car registration but now there's open/toll gateless sections, they're using ANPR so now need a number. It's easy to switch to a different number if you need to.

I've always had APRR and subsequent Fulli tags but fell foul of the UK bank not honouring variable dd outside UK. Unfortunately the emails from Fulli went to spam and they blocked me. Once I worked it out, something was lost in translation trying to explain and I couldn't sort it out. I switched to Bip+Go with an equivalent deal. I use it mostly in the summer in my kit car, which saves a load of hassle, given the harness instead of a standard seat belt, cap on a leash, radio comm's wires and lack of doors.

One thing to consider is, don't have a separate delivery address if you can help it. My tag has been circling the local PO delivery offices for a week. Bit and go had put my home address on 2 customs labels and the delivery address on another. The post offices machines had been reading both and bouncing it back and forward. It finally arrived at lunchtime today 3hrs before I set off to France; cudos to the Postman for getting it to me, once he finally had it in his hands after I spoke to him yesterday.

Fulli Nomade is probably best -

free delivery and no charges in the months you don't use it. You might need a euro bank account though

You don't need to register a car number with a tag in France. The "badge télépéage" is transferable between cars without reregistering. The flux-libre autoroutes will detect a badge for charging purposes, but, if no badge is detected, the ANPR system will register instead and you then have to pay the toll via one of the other methods.

How do you know if your tag has been detected by the overhead systems? Our tag sometimes beep when we go through the normal barrier peage and sometimes doesn't

@robs1, I think our tag only bleeps at the first toll booth when we enter the péage. After that, I don't know when I hear it again. Perhaps on the following day after an overnight? You know it has been detected when the barrier opens.

Ours have always beeped but this year it stopped after we had been through the mont blanc tunnel but then started again a couple of days later. The question about how do you know it's been recognised was about the new system of overhead systems without and barrier on the road ,

Having been through a "flux-libre" (toll booth free) section this week, its as @aalexander, says; The badge beeps as you go under the gantry.

I'd incorrectly assumed in my earlier post that the gantries were only anpr cameras and not scanners. They must be pretty powerfull to detect at the speed cars are going under them. The number registration required for my pass, must simply be for the Italian/Spanish booths.

On normal (old school?) booth+barrier ones mine have always beeped every time. If it doesnt beep the barrier doesn't open and I end up doing the "toll booth tango" (jumping about, waving my tag at the sensors). rolling eyes Laughing

In case anyone is interested in my quest to remove Italy from my Bip&Go subscription (France+Spain+Italy). It cannot be done via the website or app, but must be done by special request. It costs 12€ to get a new transponder, and the old one must be posted back at cost.

If I ever intend to drive out to Arabba again for another birthday bash, no doubt I'll have to do a similar process to add Italy back.

@Crosbie, why are you wanting to remove italy?
I don't get charged anything for having Italy on mine unless I use it there (same as France). The initial admin/deposit cost is higher for a multi country tag but makes no difference after that.

@adithorp, it seemed to me that the 'per usage month' charge was significantly higher, e.g. 3€50 instead of 1€50 per month used - irrespective of what country you travelled in.

I had endless faff resigning from Bip&Go. Had to send thing back, they kept insisting I hadn't. In the end I just ignored their bills and reminders and as my French bank account has been closed - they can whistle!! Won't bother with them again - did it specifically to be able to use it in Italy but nowadays I'm unlikely to be driving much, if at all, in Italy in my own car.

@Crosbie, perhaps Fulli Nomade would work for you? 1.90€ per month (only if you use it) in France and 2.40€ per month if you also use it in Italy, Spain or Portugal. No charge for the months you don't use it. Currently offering 12 months free for France only, free delivery . Initial fee of 9.90€
Saves faffing about each time.

@Hells Bells, thanks for the suggestion.

I also have a Ulys transponder for my other car.

It might make even more sense for me to reduce to one company (Ulys or Bip&Go), and get 2 transponders on a single account.

I'll get there eventually...

My contract is different rates in France to those in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

With my old fulli tag and from memory, when I used it in multiple countries in a month I was charged whichever had the higher rate. I assume this is the same on my bip+Go. Last months usage was france only ans charged appropriately @ 1€90.

And reason for revisiting thread- is Fulli still best? It has a 10 month deal on free of costs.
There is a 30% discount on Haute Savoie specific tag which is interesting too- but not sure that goes with the 10 month free.
It’s all so complicated- same dilemma over what season ski pass to buy!

@Doccam, not sure if it has changed but the HS specific badge is only better if you only make journeys on the HS autoroutes.

And don't mention season passes. I'm stuck in a loop on the Serre Che website trying to order mine.

I have been using these for some years and all ok until this summer. We were approaching the 30k lane and noticed a car right up by the barrier, stationary and waiting to go through. I thought nothing of it until our car activated the barrier to rise, allowing the car in front to pass through, and then close for us. The only way of getting it open again, was to take a ticket and proceed through the now open barrier.
All was well until I got the invoice some weeks later and got charged an extra 40 or so euros for “ unauthorised use “ or some such expression.
This was with Bip and Go and when I looked at their website there was a method of appealing, which I did and I now wait to see if the amount is refunded.
It did occur to us that this might have been a scam whereby, the car in front just sits behind the barrier waiting for some innocent to effectively open the gate for them. I am not sure how they then get off the motorway but there is presumably a way. Just thought all Snowheads should be aware and maybe avoid the 30k lane if there appears to be someone stationary and waiting at the barrier.

Interesting - will keep my eyes open for that.

Generally we are always over in the lorry lane as most 30 lanes have height barriers so not such an issue there I suspect.

People will always find a way, I've seen clips off cars tailgating and sneaking through before barrier closes. At one stage, so I am assured, you always used to be able to get through with an expired credit card, as the card was merely scanned and then processing was overnight. Think that loophole closed with contactless payments.

My Fulli account is linked to my UK RBS account - it just needs the IBAN number. Obviously the charges come through in Euros so you pay a bit extra for the bank to convert it to £.

Is there a way to check the battery on these tags? We've had ours for around 4 years and haven't used it on the continent for a couple of years. We will be driving in France again soon.

We use Ulys by Vinci and we've never had a problem with payments or recognition.

@Sonmi451, if you have the UK SANEF type tag, it'll give you an indication on your account page.

@fuzzydunlop, interesting, wonder if it was a genuine error and they'd just got in wrong lane? Will certainly be wary of that

Appeals usually work as they have video of all the lanes, we've appealed a few where we've been charged wrong class
