In summer especially I've seen cars hang back behind me making sure I go through before following, Mind you I do the same if I'm following a UK car and have been proved right to do so on one occassion.

I do that regardless of who is front of me. Who wouldn't? Apart from anything else you have to judge the speed to be hitting as near as possible 30 kph when you reach the barrier. It's no fun otherwise. If you have come to a standstill behind a suspicious-looking foreign driver who might be so stupid as not to understand the system, you have to then do it from a standing start.

Hi. I’ve been using these tags for quite a few years now. The last 2 trips (April & July) I have noticed that I have to drive until I’m almost touching the barrier and at more or less a full stop (sometimes a full stop is needed) before the tag pings and lets me through. Finding that out is through trial and error since had to reverse out of a tag lane at the first barrier in April! I have checked the battery and all good. It is placed within those black dotted area on my windscreen as well. I have got the technique now but begin to feel my heart race whenever I approach a booth. Anyone else find this? Ta

I can confirm that I’ve regularly seen cars behind me desperately trying to change lane when they see a uk registered car entering the 30 km lane.
|
Interesting observation since I think a greater proportion of UK plated cars use the telepeage lane than French registered. I suspect they just hang back anyway (I do when I'm using a transceiver) or just moving to another lane that has fewer cars in it. Many lanes also accept telepeage and card payment.

Commonly referred to on these pages as 'doofer anxiety'. If I haven't used mine in a while at the first toll booth I come to I'll always go for one of the lanes which gives a credit card option 'just in case'

If you use the M6 toll the booth will read the doofer and it will beep but the screen will say something like transceiver not recognised. It's a good test to see if the thing is still alive.

‘Doofer anxiety’ is real. Especially the first time through a toll when you haven’t used the doofer in a while.

Surely by then you are through, or is it that by having entered by telepeage you don't have ticket and have to reverse out?

Just check the battery status online before you leave if it's green you're good to go.

@johnE, if you have a telepeage tag you can use any lane at the “peage”. The normal method of passing through the barrier is to join a queue and wait for your turn (others may be using cards or taking tickets), come to a stop close to the barrier and wait for a beep, the light to turn to green and for the barrier to rise. There are however special 30km lanes at many but not all toll stations. Only owners of tags can use these lanes because you do not have to stop the vehicle to pass through. You simply approach the lane at approx 30 kmph, wait for an earlier beep than on other lanes and for the barrier to raise ahead enabling you to drive safely through without stopping. Clearly this is much quicker and there is no chance of a queue to build up unless of course the vehicle in front does not have a tag in which case the barrier will not rise and not just that vehicle but potentially several following will be stuck until it is sorted out. Hence the reluctance to follow foreign registered vehicles into the 30 km lanes

A quick heads up on arriving at Calais tolls yesterday our Bip and Go Tag had stopped working, so I went into their office in Reims. During the process of issuing a new one the Lady said, oh what is your registration number its not on your account. Not wishing to waste any more time I didn't query her request, new tag issued and off we went.
The existing tag hadn't made any suggestion of running out of battery. On checking my account today there was a banner message saying enter your Registration number. Not sure if the lack of a reg number had stopped it working! I've had tags over the last 20+ years never needed a reg number before ...
So please check your account has your reg. number before setting off with your Bip and Go tag.

@boredsurfin, I’m pretty sure that because the latest Bip & Go tag now works in Spain and Portugal that is why they ask for the reg number. It still isn’t needed if you only use the tag in France

@rdsweb, ah yes she did make a point of telling me it works in Spain Portugal and Italy

@boredsurfin, just a word of caution. Bip&Go charge extra to include Italy so unless you intend to use it there I would get it changed back the basic tariff.

@rdsweb, it was a straight change of broken tag and tariff hasn't changed. We tend to go over to Italy in the summer but dont go on the motorways, but you never know...

As there are now French motorways without toll booths using ANPR, I think we're all going to have to hand over our reg numbers to whoever provides our badges soon. I logged into Fulli recently, and had a message that my badge needed to be changed. It turned up in a couple of days, and I have to return the old one.

Strange that. We changed ours not long ago too at the office in St Omer and the same tariff included Spain and Portugal but they wanted extra to include Italy

@rdsweb, The converse is that if I choose to have my Italian tag set up for France I only pay a charge each calendar month that I use it on French motorways.

We do use the Italian motorways, and often as a single driver on the way back from Turin airport, so it is very useful. It also works for the parking at the airport, meaning no faffing required.

I enabled Italy on my Bip&Go, but I only need France now. There doesn't seem to be a way of downgrading to France-Only instead of France+Italy. Anyone spotted how to do it?

@Crosbie, in the Bip&Go app in the Badges section if I click on the 3 dots next to the badge I get the option to “change subscription” or “change for Spanish, Portuguese, Italian model”. I don’t have Italy included on mine but presumably if I did then the option would be there to remove it. If it’s not there then maybe try “change subscription”

@rdsweb, thanks. I checked that out, but it doesn't give any option to remove Italy. I've therefore sent a request within a message. We'll see...
