Poster: A snowHead

Hi, we’re heading to Les Gets at Easter (crossing everything for some snow ). Flying out with BA but booked Air France /KLM joint operated flight for the return. Problem is, I can’t get a straight answer from them about luggage. We’ve booked hold luggage to take a coffin bag but Air France say this has to be under 158cm otherwise fees apply and there’s no option to book sports equipment other than a bike. Anyone got recent experience of this? Are we likely to get away with it, provided it’s under 23kg?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

That 158 cm is the 3 dimensional total for an ordinary suitcase, you need to book sports equipment for a coffin in my opinion. We flew to Helsinki with KLM at new year, couldn't fault them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Glosterwolf, Good to know you had no issues, the confusing thing is that there’s no option to book any sports equipment, other than bikes. Their website says it counts as ordinary luggage, tried their online chat yesterday and was told we’d be charged extra

KLM website says
“You can bring your (water) ski or snowboard equipment instead of an item of checked luggage without having to make a reservation. It can be up to 300 cm (length + width + height) and up to 23 kg in Economy Class and Premium Comfort Class, or 32 kg in Business Class.
A set of ski equipment may only consist of a pair of skis, a pair of ski poles, and a pair of ski boots. A set of snowboard equipment may only consist of a board and a pair of snowboard boots.”
It also says you MAY have to reserve and pay but that depends on the equipment involved and skis don’t appear to require either.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The times I flew KLM with skis there was a bit on an email or site that said please confirm skis and on a couple of occasions it asked me to phone to confirm.
When phoning it was quite simple.
One thing to be VERY careful with is cabin bag weight. BA have a 23kg cabin bag (they never weigh that much) and an under the seat bag.
KLM have a 12kg cabin bag limit and the size is also enforced at the gate (watch out for cabin bag wheels that make it too big).
So don’t fly out thinking you are okay based on the BA weight limit. I’m not saying you were…. Just making you aware.

@GlasgowCyclops, Cheers for the heads up, we’ve booked hold luggage and travel pretty light hand luggage wise, tempted to take my ski boots as hand luggage though, don’t want them to go astray!
I’ll double check the confirmation emails about the ski bag… fingers crossed they don’t clock that it’s a snow board and a pair of skis in there
