Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saturday traffic Kufstein

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
2 years running now we have nearly been caught out by the traffic from Austria to Munich airport on a Saturday. Luckily we always leave a bit of extra time as a 2 hour motorway journey can take 3-4 hours. If you use waze and it recommends a cross country route off the autobahns - take it! Yesterday it was stop/start from 5 miles from Kufstein all the way to the airport. If we hadn’t followed Waze we would have missed our flight.

@BertieG, I always get off the motorway around Munich if satnav recommends it.. and add an hour to the planned journey time

@BertieG, bear in mind that there are potential driving bans for non local registered cars on some of the minor roads. You could easily end up in a queue only to be turned around back to the motorway. This applies more to coming into Austria rather than leaving.

@holidayloverxx, it's mainly heading into the Inn valley to try and reduce traffic through Kufstein etc (or maybe the cynical could say it is to encourage purchase of the vignette). Saturdays are often busy with German and Dutch tourists heading to Ski Welt, Kitzbuel, St Johan and Ski Juwel causing Kufstein and surrounding roads to become gridlocked. It's not unknown for travellers leaving Zillertal to be directed onto the motorway too.

Surprised there were issues northbound on a Saturday it is usually OK the traffic northbound tends to be bad on a Sunday afternoon. The no through traffic thing is definitely there. There are bans through Kufstein enforced both by private security and the Police. Driving back from Tuscany in the summer there were signs all the way from the Brenner saying "all through traffic Autobahn only". There are roadworks on the A93 for which there is not really an alternative. The A99 has been clear recently (I wasnt around over the weekend so maybe it was bad then). Just seen in the local paper that there were a series of accidents on the A8 last Saturday caused by the snowy weather which would account for the traffic jams, not much that can be done about that
