I assumed it would open in this December for the traditional two week period, just long enough to raise hopes, before being again condemned and closed for the rest of the season.

Further reading sets the alarm bells ringing.

Following conclusion of the remediation works, plus safety checks and staff training, we're aiming for the funicular to be back in service for the upcoming snowsports season which starts in December 2024. We don't have a definite date at present, but will issue an update as soon as one can be confirmed.

So reading closely it says the train will be up and running in the snowsports season, which could eb anytime after December up to April........ and that the "snowsports season" starts in December. So more carefully worded BS from them suggesting one thing and actually meaning another thing?

Yes, you're quite right there, I never picked up on the actual grammar of the statement. We are being played like the electorate with a political manifesto, lol!

Even better value for money, they've held the season passes to the same price as last year.
I wonder how many they sold last year (or the years before)? |
It's an absolute disgrace that people who bought season tickets last winter (on the premise that the funicular would be operating) were effectively conned - and got no refund. And not even a penny discount for them over and above Joe Public this winter

What mug would buy a season ticket for that hunk of unreliable junk with no refund facility.
And if they didn’t refund some of last year’s I don’t know how they got away with it.

@Alastair Pink, if accurate, and I have no reason to doubt it, an uplift capacity of 300-480 per hour is shocking. Worse than a typical drag lift for orders of magnitude more cost

@rambotion, that’s about half the capacity of the Fiacaill Ridge Poma or similar to the chairlift the Funicular replaced 22 years ago.

Article from the Press & Journal:Cairngorm railway is ‘inherently flawed’, warns engineer who oversaw Skye Bridge project
A top Scottish engineer is warning repairs on the Cairngorm mountain railway will not last.
John Carson, 76, who was the boss of the company that built the Skye Bridge, believes it was a poor decision to build the funicular using precast concrete beams instead of steel.
“This is like putting lipstick on a pig,” he said.
“You’ve got a structure that is inherently flawed.”
The beleaguered mountain railway was first shut in 2018 and only reopened in January 2023 after over-budget repairs which cost £25 million. It was out of commission again just seven months later for further “snagging works” and is yet to reopen.
But Mr Carson, who has extensive experience designing and building concrete structures, was scathing about the project’s handling. “The remedial works will add little to the badly built strength of the structure,” he said.
Mr Carson was a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers before he retired, the highest ranking membership.
He previously worked as the chief estimator for Balfour Beatty, the company trying to fix the funicular.
His concern is with the stainless steel brackets on the concrete beam which will expand and contract as it gets hotter and colder.
The top engineer claims some beams weathered badly and some are cracking, and said this could lead to them deflecting.
Mr Carson questions the span-to-depth ratio for the beams and believes the hostile mountain environment will prove a long-term problem.
“I see no way where a designer could calculate an acceptable factor of safety for the original structure or the remediated one,” he said.
Much of this comes back to the decision to use concrete.
It’s understood this was originally done as a cost-saving exercise.
Mr Carson’s warnings leave major question marks for HIE and the use of large sums of public money.
Bosses of rival ski resorts have previously criticised how much money is funnelled into the struggling rail line.
We put Mr Carson’s claims directly to HIE.
A spokesperson said: “The remediation works at Cairngorm are progressing well and we’re looking forward to seeing the funicular back in action for the snowsports season.
“Safety has always been our top priority, as demonstrated by the immediate decision to withdraw the funicular from service in August 2023.
“Rigorous testing and safety checks will be carried out before passengers are welcomed on board.”

Inspired by current conditions I bit the bullet and bought a Cairngorm season ticket today. Early bird prices run up until the end of November. Chatting to a local ski instructor yesterday and she'd heard that there was meant to be an inspection on the funicular on Monday but it was cancelled due to err, snow! Meant to have been re-arranged to this coming Monday but I can't see that happening either. Once the inspection on the track has been signed-off they still need to do tests on the actual train and all the brakes/safety systems.

@orange, the repaired funicular will have to be approved by an inspector from the Department of Transport before it can go back into service. When Glenshee (Edit:Glencoe) installed its new (well actually second hand I believe) chairlift last year I think they had to wait several weeks before an inspector was available to visit. I wonder if Cairngorm will have to wait a similar length of time or whether as its owned by HIE rather than a private company they will get a speedier response from DoT?

HIE found another black hole for their endless funds, a now on hold spaceport. Not been a good last few years, but really, where do they get all their money from???
