Poster: A snowHead

We will be driving down to the SkiWelt in January. Taking it easy driving wise so have allowed for 2 overnighters en route. As the second night we'll be getting close is it smart to get south of Munich to avoid Saturday morning traffic? Any hotel suggestions much appreciated.

@skivor, Holzkirchen is as good a place as any. It has a few different priced hotels. Do a quick search on Booking.com. Has a Curry House, Pizza place and a few other food options too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@skivor, I've stopped overnight a couple of times at Bernau am Chiemsee, it's just about 1 km off the A8 autobahn. Have a look at the Gasthof Alter Wirt. Great food in their restaurant.

Ah yes, I normally use it when I'm driving to the Salzburg area. It looks to be about 23km beyond the junction for the A93 to Kufstein, so a bit off the direct SkiWelt route, but a nice place to stay none the less.

We discovered Rosenheim in October on the way back to MUC. It has a lovely old centre and would be a very pleasant place for a stopover.
It's about an hour south of Munich.
If wanting to get a bit further south, Kufstein is pleasant enough too.

Rosenheim rings bells : my Bavarian buddies know it as the the place in Germany with the highest concentration of millionaires. No idea if that is true but if it is then it could be a bit pricey for an overnighter

Rosenheim rings bells for me, too - I went there many, many, years ago. Don't remember anything about it, except that it was lovely, and that we arrived late, hungry, found some accommodation and had a super "pot luck" supper which the proprietor rustled up for us. Wasn't expensive, but maybe it's gone upmarket since?

There's plenty of places around Rosenheim. Very near the late lamented Samerberg Sue's manor

Thanks everyone for your replies that focussed me on the area
. After further research I've booked Gasthof Kirner in Bad Feilnbach (£64 B&B), it"s SW of Rosenheim, not far off the A8. Will be good as we are staying in Schwendt and it will be easy access from there.
Let it snow!!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@skivor, That is a pretty good choice of location as it will avoid the worst of the jams (do note transit through Kufstein is no longer allowed you must stick to the Autobahn) though not quite sure why it takes so long to get from Calais to the Kufstein area. Admittedly in the summer (longer daylight though with risk of thunder storms) we do Calais to Munich in around 10 hours, no problem to get to the pub for dinner in the evening.
