Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking for a chalet hotel

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My colleague and I run a dry slope all Winter, and late March we go off for a week skiing together, been doing this for over 15 years. We used to always go to the same Chalet hotel in Megeve, but sadly their business didn't survive the Pandemic, so now we'relooking for alternatives.

It's proving quite hard to find chalet hotels via Google searching - I've found Ski Miquel, but not much else, and wondered whether anyone has any sggestions? Habitally we've driven, because Megeve is an easy drive, we get an extra day skiing out of it, and we can easily take 2 pairs of skis each. However, we're not totally averse to flying and going to Italy, Austria, or further afield in France. Bit concerned abot how expensive Switzerland might be, though.

So why a chalet hotel? With just the 2 of us it's nice to be in a sociable environment where there are other people to eat dinner with, and even possibly ski with. Also, if one of us gets ill or injured (as happened last year), it means the other doesn't have to ski on their own. Hotels are too impersonal, and we did try a catered chalet once, but with the smaller number of other guests involved, we just didn't find anyone else that we particularly clicked with.

Any suggestions, please?

Thanks for the suggestions. Some out of our budget, some in resorts we'd rather not go to, and a few that are worth a look.

@karin, not sure if it’s still running (website seems a bit dormant) but worth an email to David, the owner www.the3valleys.com in La Tania. Great location for skiing the Courchevel Valley and accessing the rest, relaxed and sociable atmosphere, good food, not too expensive

@karin, I imagine you went to Chalet D'Antoine in Megeve, as I sed to. Hard to match that, especially the food quality.
Towards the end of March, if just 2 of you, I'd wait for a late discounted deal and see where the good snow is.

@Montan, website and FB page do both look very abandoned.

The issue I have is that it's going to be very hard to convince my colleague to go to any of the big French areas popular with British tour ops because he's been spoiled by the almost non-existent lift queues in the Megeve area. His only 2 recent experiences elsewehere, La Plagne and Les Arcs, did not impress him!

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
The dilemma you have then is that if you're stuck with late March, you'll be taking risks with snow conditions, if your colleague insists on a less busy area that's not renowned for good late season snow.
Having pointed that out, I guess you must have experienced plenty of slush in Evasion Mont Blanc at the end of March in the last 15 years?

The thing with chalethotels, let's say 25+ guests, is they rely on high occupancy rates to be economically viable. That means they tend to be in the ski areas most popular in the market. Those that are higher altitude, or otherwise have good snow conditions over a long season. They've also taken a financial battering with, I guess, half of them changing use in the last 5 years (eg conversion to apartments).

It would increase your choice significantly if you included large hotels, rather than just TO run chalethotels.

Why not look at alternate Chalet Hotels in Megeve? eg https://www.stanfordskiing.co.uk/catered-ski-chalets/chalet-hotel-sylvana

Food was excellent when I stayed there - BUT that was over 10 years ago!

Part of your problem is that employment law changes have meant that most “chalet” businesses have folded.

You could look at the Folie Douce in Chamonix, looks fairly sociable, just watch out for the €65 prosecco …

Small family run chalet hotel at the bottom of the Prodains Express cable car in Avoriaz. Avoriaz should still have decent snow in late March, and you have good access to the main part of PdS via the cable car, as well as the les Gets side by taking a bus into Morzine (though in late March the snow in the les Gets area likely won't be much good).

The thing with chalethotels, let's say 25+ guests

the only time we stayed in what called itself a chalet hotel was in Valmeinier, with Snowcoach. The holiday was OK, but the hotel was a bit of a disaster - and far less sociable than catered chalets, which we'd done a lot. There were a number of big groups which very much stuck together, often with lots of big kids who rampaged around the place and intimidated littler ones, hogging the hot tub. But it had a LOT more than 25 guests.

I googled and was surprised to find it was still going strong. It's very well located in Valmeinier and I think the link to Valloire is a lot easier now. We liked the area and very much liked the "coach" plan, which gave us 8 days skiing.

There used to be a couple of this type of hotels in Lech. Originally run by the owners, then completely rented out to English TO's
But since corona back to the Lech based owners....

@karin,

Chalet/Hotel Au Coin du Feu in Prodains.

It’s not budget but I think it’s value for money as the food is V good, wine is very decent (not plonk), ski to back door and has a hot tub.

It’s popular with families as they have their own nannies etc.

Pick a week with no kids holidays and it will be mostly adults.

(I am biased as I used to work there).

Indeed we did, so many times it almost felt like home from home walking through the door at the start of a week.

We went with them last year, and it was fine, but they no longer have the Chalet hotel we stayed in last year. Besides, I quite fancy going somewhere else for a change.

Possibly, but I'm in Morzine 2 weeks previously with family! Interestingly, should have thought of them because my daughter actually worked a Summer season for them too, about 6 years ago.

@zaphod424, that one also looks good, but obviously it's PDS again

So I put this post up to see if there were any obvious alternatives to what I'd found, but TBH St Miquel in Serre Chevallier or Montgenevre still look pretty near the top of the list. Just haven't skied either of those areas before and don't know much about them.

@karin, Serre Chevalier is not a bad choice IMO. A long drive but useful to have a car when there I'd say. Then, days out to, for example, Alpe D'Huez, glacier skiing if needed at Les Deux Alpes, Montgenevre, Risoul, are all easily reachable. Briancon, at one end of the Serre Chevalier area, is a pleasant, very compact little city to have a look around. Don't expect anything like the feel of Megeve though. Mountain scenery still great and better value for money for sure, apart from the longer drive. The snowHeads' (mostly) off piste Bash has been based in Serre Chevalier, so there's plenty recent knowledge about the area on this forum.

You could look at a 'singles' chalet/hotel tour operator like Singlesport, Hofnar, Cold Fusion, The Ski Gathering. The guests will be there to meet other people for socialising and skiing, not stuck in their own closed groups. You can 'participate' as much or as little as you like.
