Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Motherofthree,
Updated transfer options, I’ve reposted this from the Saalbach site.

The tourist office have updated their website with the transport links, including the “new” airport shuttle service, which is Austrian Transfer, if there are two or more its €60 each way, a single person is €100 Shocked

https://www.saalbach.com/en/service/arrival

The bus timetable from 11 December has been published, the fare from Salzburg airport is €15.00 one way, https://salzburg-verkehr.at/en/, you’ll get train options too.

@radar, Thanks very much for this info. We are still hoping to take the 260 Regionalbus from Salzburg airport to Maishofen, even if this means waiting around at the airport for a couple of hours. We hope that this bus stops in the Atzing area of Maishofen, as this is where our hotel (Hotel Victoria) is. Do you by any chance know if there is a toilet on this bus?

The private transfer option from Salzburg airport is €400 return for the five of us, which is a lot more than taking bus 260 or the train to Zell am See, followed by a bus or taxi to Maishofen.

@Motherofthree, been trying to keep a look out for places you can have your own Sandwiches, there is a lounge at the bottom of the Polten 8er and then another in between the Astizkogelbahn 8er and the Muldenbahn8er. Haven’t spotted any others so far.

The Postbus #680 between Zell and Saalbach - Hinterglemm - Lengau stops on the main road at Atzing: i.e. the bus stop (and the one opposite) circled blue on the previous post, which is almost directly opposite the Hotel Victoria.

This bus stop is also where the #260 bus from the airport will stop - it is not even 100m from the hotel.

The Maishofen-Schonleiten ski bus stops at the bus stops circled in black - from where you walk under the road bridge and along the path on the side of the road nearest the big manor house (opposite side to the petrol station and your hotel) and then cross back under the main road at the Atzing bus stop to get to the hotel

you could do a couple of circuits on the ZellamseeXpress in the disco car and eat your picnic in there. Very Happy

Zell is defo worth a visit, I would ignore the comments earlier re inferior lifts and scenery. It is quite limited if you aren't confident on red, although still navigable:

from ZellamseeXpress 10, little lift and 9a gets you chairlift back upto Schmittenhoe, then you can ski down the "front" site blues 1,2,3. Back up you need 8 then a lift back up Schmittenhoe, then 9 and the red 11 which is quite gentle and a lift back up to the ZellamseeXpress. suggest you download in the gondola back to Vieh, as piste 21 red is long steep and narrow in places, so not for the fainthearted, although a fabulous piste if its within your ability. The reds around 16,17 18 etc are really nice, especially in the morning, they cut up with the sun by afternoon and there is also (usually or was when I was last there) a fun slope over that side too, if you are finding your red slope legs later in the week.

Saalbach is easy to build a "blue only" trip around a lot of slopes.

@radar, Brilliant, thanks for the info about picnic places. Many thanks for the map too. I have read online that the ski bus is supposed to stop in front of Hotel Victoria in Maishofen, but perhaps this is only the ski bus to Zell am See and not the one to Saalbach? It seems a bit far to walk to the top of the main road with ski gear, but perhaps it's not as far as it looks...

@quinton, Thanks very much for the info. Is Postbus 680 the "normal" bus for people without ski gear? It's amazing that the 260 bus from the airport stops so close to the hotel. Thanks for the info about the ski bus stop to Saalbach. I think it's a bit misleading on the hotel website then for Hotel Victoria to claim that the ski bus stop hotel is "in front of the hotel" - unless there is another ski bus that stops there?

@t44tomo, Thanks for the info, very useful to know. Yes, we have had lunch in a gondola before lol. Not ideal, but better than being freezing cold if we can't find an indoor place to have it. It sounds like Saalbach will suit us better than Zell am See then, as most of us don't like red slopes.

@Motherofthree

Look at Radar's post from 00.13 on Saturday - the one with the larger map and a bus stop marked in blue (there's a bus stop on both sides of the road).

Hotel Victoria is the building three houses up the street from the bus stop - on the map level with where the first part of the word "Zellerstrasse" is (i.e. the "Zell" bit) on the left as you look at the map, set back from the road. While not directly outside of the hotel, the bus stop is two houses away from the hotel - I would guess not even the 100m that I wrote earlier and more like 50m.

The same post from Radar also includes the numbers of the buses that stop there (and on the opposite side of the road). 260 is the Salzburg-Zell bus, which you can also use to get to the slopes in Zell am See if you choose to go in that direction. 680 is the Zell-Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Lengau bus, which again, you can use with ski equipment to get to the S-H Ski Circus or to Zell am See.

Here is the bus timetable for the Maishofen-Saalbach bus and the Maishofen-Zell bus. https://www.maishofen.com/en/saalbach-zell-am-see/winter/skiing-snowboarding/ski-bus.html

Buses on both routes, including the Maishofen Ski Bus, stop at Atzing (i.e. "almost" outside your hotel, so no need for the walk to the "black" bus stops in the previous posts) and bus #4 goes to the Schonleitenbahn lift outside of Saalbach, while the #680 departures are going as usual to and from central Saalbach (Schattbergbahn - Xpress Strasse) and Hinterglemm (near the Zwolferkogelbahn) and on to Lengau. Note that for these two stops, #680 bus stops on the main road, not at the local Saalbach Ski Bus stops directly outside the SchattbergXpress and the Zwolferkogel lift station. Also at Schonleiten, the Maishofen buses #4 terminate at the Schonleiten lift station, while the #680 bus stops on the main road.

For the departures listed on the timetables your lift ticket entitles you to free travel to Zell or to Saalabch-Hinterglemm.

@quinton, thanks, just back from taking the 680/260 Very Happy and I'm with you, I confused things with the black circles , you can take the 680 from Atzing which with children would be easier than walking to the Abzweigung Glemmtal stop (black circles).

Not in Saalbach Hinterglem, for those who are based there, Maishofen have a special arrangement.

For us based in Saalbach we have to pay to use the scheduled bus service,the ski bus is of course free

@quinton, Thanks for your comprehensive information about the buses. It sounds like the ski buses are the best option to get to the ski slopes with ski gear. It's good to know that the ski buses stop so close to the hotel, just a shame they don't run more often.

@Motherofthree

The #680 serves as the free ski bus for some departures to and from your hotel (the ones on the timetable). Outside of these times you can still use the hourly #680 in either direction, but you have to pay. From memory, it is about €5 each way (if the driver can be bothered to charge you). #680 buses are big "bendy" buses with room for over 100 passengers, so as you're getting on one stop before the main stop in Maishofen, you should easily get a seat.

5 free buses between 8.00 and 9.30 and again between 16.00 and 18.00 in the opposite direction, the other departures and then the hourly #680 bus outside of the peak times - from almost right in front of your hotel - is really a very good service.

@quinton, @radar, Thank you both for clarifying. Yes the bus service to and from Maishofen doesn't sound too bad actually. Hopefully it will be sufficient for us and we won't need to take many taxis.
