Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Love les menus de la chasse - pears, red cabbage …

I have a few fluo t-shirts for trail running at this time of year.

Amazing how many Swedes are killed/injured by (often drunk) hunters Shocked

@BobinCH, I hope your dog doesn't look too much like something tasty!

Great pic by the way.

I hate it. Not for any ethical reason but in Morzine they can basically hunt everywhere over the weekend, and given they shot and killed a mountain biker a few years back, I don't trust them whatsoever. It stops me going down there to be honest.

The first time I encountered "La chasse" it was driving down through France. Big men in camo gear, with huge rifles, were all over the place, in farmland. I asked the girl at the cash desk when we stopped for petrol what they were after "Rabbits", she replied, with a roll of the eyes.

Well yet another fatality caused by careless hunters: British woman, 67, shot dead ‘by companion holding rifle backwards over his shoulder’ during wild boar hunt in France rolling eyes

A much loved dog belonging to one of our French neighbours disappeared - he was convinced she'd been shot by hunters.

Apparently there were 8 hunting fatalities last year. Noted at the bottom of the French article about this case in le Monde

There was a Radio 4 programme on la chasse about 18 months ago. The main take away was that the number of fatalities isn't anything like a reflection of the number of non-fatal incidents. The programme cited a lot of French controversy about extensive damage to vehicles, pet deaths, non-fatal injuries to the general public, and near-misses.

Last week we were out running up the Mountain on one of our usual routes, it's a designated trail that links the valley at 1,400 to a summer village 2,000m and cars and people go up frequently, though admittedly not so many this time of year in the interseason.

I was ahead with one dog off the leash and I heard what sounded like a pack of dogs, so I deduced immediately that there must be a hunt going on, further on there were a couple of guys working on a snow canon and they confirmed that indeed above were hunters; meanwhile, the OH was a km or so behind me.

In the ten or so years of running/hiking up there this was a first.

After a km or so I saw one hunter below me, and we both waved in acknowledgement that we'd seen each other, meanwhile, I knew that the dogs and other hunters were above me, so presumably, the strategy was to drive the beasties down towards the hunters below me?

Ten mins later I get a very panicky phone call from the OH who had bumped into a couple of hunters coming out of the forest at speed, and she was quite agitated over it all.

It is quite breathtaking to think that they can hunt like that over what is a designated access route, for sure if we were in the forest then that's a different scenario.

Anyway, the OH has written this up and found out some other detail that friends in Morzine alerted her to, as obviously there it's very topical. The trouble is she's now quite anxious about taking the dogs up the Mountain.

@Weathercam, I experienced a similar thing in Provence midweek whilst walking in the hills. Sadly, for the first time in 15 years, this was without our dog who we lost in the Spring, he would often be 50m or more ahead of me. I came down a little used footpath onto a forestry road to find a hunter, a few hundred yards later another, and so on. About eight in all; the dogs (with bells) were in the woods below and the when the boar came onto the road that was the kill zone. A few hundred metres past one hunter and three shots rang out so I guess the boar crossed the track I'd been on.
I wear orange.
Next dog is getting a vest too, or a bell.

There was a pretty grim bbc report this week about a trial of a hunter and hunt leader on manslaughter charges after they shot and killed a young man who was chopping wood on his own land!

The hunter who fired the shot took up hunting after his own child died in an accident and shot through a hedge with no visibility. The young man killed took 15 minutes to die.
