Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@franga, definitely, should be 25-30cm to 1200m by Tuesday. It’s like those partial opening weekends, which are amongst my favorite days to be up there as there will be some lifts and some unpisted areas within easy reach.
The cannons are likely to run mon-tues, so I’d expect Wednesday at the latest to have some lifts running. Glass half full.

Sounds good - enjoy the fresh snow and leave some for us please!

Just continuing the discussion from the general weather thread about possible rain / snow limits for the Portes du Soleil over the coming week. Basically I was suggesting that Davidof's post using Metro France predictions was rather pessimistic.

As you would expect there is a bit of variation between models at this timescale, but here is my interpretation (feel free to disagree!):

GFS (most recent, 12Z run):
- Sunday pm ~1500m
- Monday 1am ~ 1350m (heaviest precipitation here)
- Monday dawn until Tuesday dawn ~ below 1000m
- then Wednesday into Thursday, maybe 1500m, dropping to 1000m, but TBC
- staying relatively changeable beyond, maybe another rain /snow event next weekend followed by a mild couple of days
- beyond 10 days, a signal for colder weather but too far away to have any certainty

GEM
- now similar to GFS (an improvement on previous runs)

ECM & ICON
- similar to GFS, perhaps add 100m to snow/rain limits

Meteo-Alpes (IMO the most accurate "human" forecast) currently goes for:
- Sunday pm ~1400m but some uncertainty
- overnight dropping to ~1000m
- Monday ~1000m dropping to 800m
- Tuesday ~1800m (but only light precipitation)
- Wednesday & Wednesday night ~1700m dropping to 1000m
- (in summary, similar to GFS at least for the main event on Sunday night / Monday.

Overall I think lots to be positive about. Above 1500m should be mostly snow, and should look white down to at least 1200m. For resort level snow:

Avoriaz will have lots of powder, no question. Les Crosets & Champoussin, a touch lower on the Swiss side, should also have a decent covering.

Chatel / Les Gets at 1100-1300m are tricky to forecast as a lot of the precipitation will be marginal re. rain vs. snow.

Morzine, La Chapelle, St Jean d'Aulps at 1000m would probably have a dusting by Monday dawn and a reasonable covering by dusk, but could melt during the following couple of days.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Chatel and LG are above 1200m so they will be absolutely fine.

Nothing has really changed for me and I haven’t read the other thread. We know these models can be wrong by a few hundred meters so it’s hard to get too precise, am confident there will be plenty of snow all the way down.

@polo, well, Super Chatel gondola base is at 1220m and Les Gets Chavannes gondola base is at 1170m, so I think my 1100-1300m description was reasonable for resort level snow, as I specified above. Smile Obviously 99% of the skiing is higher up hence my earlier paragraph covering higher altitudes.

Otherwise yes, I generally agree with you. Forecasts are only forecasts so rain / snow limits etc. can only ever be rough estimates. And fingers crossed for the northerly!

@andy from embsay,
I’m back in Morzine with my teenage Nephew this weekend.
We snowboarded the same piste (Linga Red run).
Yep, agree it was in good shape.
The small cafe/restaurant on the skiers right hand side before you get to Echo Alpin is a nice little spot (think it’s called Le Leiche or something like that).
It’s normally fairly quiet and has a 360* Open fire which is nice. You have to ski up a little ramp to get up to it.
It’s cash only too though.
Also for info on the other side of the Linga piste ( skiers left) close to the top of Linga Bubble is the Ferme Des Piste. Decent place for Savoie lunch (croute etc).
Back in Super ‘M’ area I’ve always liked Le Passage at the bottom of ‘Tetras’ (skiers right) just before you arrive at Super ‘M’.
You can just see Mt Blanc from the terrace at Le Passage on a clear day. Nice place for an end of day beer on the slopes.
Good lunches too.
We had our lunch in the Boulangerie (as we regularly do) in Avoriaz today. I think there might be some UK Uni trips in Avoriaz this week. (Observing the clientele)

I don’t think it will be marginal for either resort. Only need a FL of 1400-1500m to have snow to the lowest lifts circa 1200m

@polo, I hope you are right and on balance think you will be. I think the important could be Tuesday / Wednesday, as Monday should see the ground white to below 1000m, but after this some low level snow will melt - but uncertain how much and up to what altitude.

Whatever the detail, it's still an excellent forecast and will be great for the PdS as a whole.

This autumn they spent €1.8m on snow making at Cret Beni in La Chapelle. The bottom may be 1,000m but it's North facing and the final green or red runs are shady. On the south facing Braitaz side you down load on the Telecabine from 1,500m.

Yep i don’t think I’ve ever seen a snowier forecast than that.
Don’t want to ‘dash’ any hopes for today but it’s still likely to be about 1700m all afternoon. In fact there has been a clear move to push back the cold air until the early hours of Monday morning, meaning more of the initial heavy band will fall as rain low down. It’s still going be white to the valleys by tomorrow morning and continue snowing into tuesday.

Wednesday looks mild and mostly dry followed by a second band of snow to low levels Thursday morning.
Weekend still seeing mixed signals, GFS flipped back to mild, others still cold, so no clear signal.

Ironically it’s beyond the weekend that a clearer signal continues to build support. All of the mean anomaly charts show high pressure finally pulling out west of France into the mid Atlantic. So far this autumn / winter we have never reached this position where there has been such a strong signal (albeit 8-10 days out) for cold and snow from the north.

Read some chat by the professionals about how disappointing the recent GFS ‘upgrade’ is. Shame that it drives so much of the easy access data out there as it is running 4th in terms of accuracy. Again for next week it is completely at odds with other models, and 00z a warm outlier vs it’s own ensemble suite. Expect it to backtrack.

Summing up, need to get to Thursday with a decent new base to low levels. Weekend is 50/50 at the moment re. temps staying cold. But next week has even better looking charts.

What is the YR forecast? It sounds very snowy so I’d like to share it with my travelling party.

All sounding pretty hopeful for our arrival this weekend and beyond. Are there any indications of snow accumulation/depths to different altitudes for the coming week? I read above that it’s hopeful most runs could be open by the weekend

We are skiing Cjatel today. Was rainy in in village when we left apartment at 9:00am (1260m) which was trying hard to turn to sleet by the time we reached PLJ valley chair. We were treated to great sight of snow covered descending chairs. Overnight snow line looked at around 1400m and there were a few inches of new snow on the tables at the bottom of Les Combes chair at 1600m. It’s has been snowing non stop all morning.

This afternoon 1700m snowline. Overnight dropping to 1100m.
Monday snowline down to 800m, total of 35-45cm expected at 1500m.
Tues evening getting milder. Wednesday into Thursday snowline dropping again from 1500m to 1000m, with another 35-50cm at 1500m.

Decent snow on higher pistes today - even lower stuff like Proclou looked far better than yesterday - see photo - it still looks a bit brown but that was a thin strip of snow surrounded by green yesterday. Snowline at about 1500m at a guess but rose during the day, and the run back to Prodains was slushy and horrid at 4pm. Forecast is for FL to drop right down tomorrow, along with more snow. Shame it’s our last day for a couple of weeks!

Hello All,

New to Snowheads, so its my first post.

We are due to stay at the bottom of the TK Turche lift and trying to plan ski school.

Is the main meeting point in the center of Les Gets or are there any ski schools that meet near the Turche area?

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

Beyond the next two days, GFS 18Z continues the promising theme of the previous few runs, and ECM and GEM remarkably similar.

- snow Wed pm with snow/rain boundary c. 1700m dropping to 1000m (smaller amounts than this current snowfall)
- warm around the weekend, possibly some rain but TBC
- cold the following week, possibly quite snowy too

Before that, looking forward to some lovely white webcams tomorrow morning! Very Happy
