@daddyjxb, and the run down to Perrieres was in really good nick last weekend even though some of the higher runs were a bit manky.

@elefantfresh, I've got a spare room , we don't rent our little place out.....actually have no business interests in the alps apart from occasional refurbs for friends of friends. If anything I want it to be less busy locally, but I reckon there will be enough snow for at least 2 snowboarders

Polo, excellent thanks. loving the outlying rouge model. Was genuinely looking for red areas rather than a typo. Heading out to Les Gets on thu 9th so fingers crossed this prediction comes to pass. Your way of explaining the models is ideal for those with limited knowledge. cheers

Honestly @rinky75 - other than some low-lying and sunny pistes, it’s not really “limited” at all - you can ski back to Les Gets and the pistes in the bowl are still fine - some bare patches but you’ll have fun (unless you require knee deep fresh to have fun, in which case maybe not).

@risb98, good spot, there's always one.....thankfully the only rouge high pressure areas are far far away.
GFS 06z sharpening up as well. Now that the main low isn't likely to get pulled too far west initially, the only way to mess this up would be for all the precip to end up to our east, but the models are running out of time for big adjustments (1-2 days more at most). And the fact that modelling further out does show the westerly low connecting (even if it gets mild), I'm hopeful that we remain in the sweet spot to get decent snow in first....but as ever, it could go wrong last minute ASCC (that's an anti-sugar coated caveat).

If you’re there for a week @rinky75, get yourself over to Avoriaz/Chatel if you can. More to go at and a bit more altitude.
I’m back out on Friday and am looking forward to a few sunny days before the goggles come out midweek. Only blot on the landscape is I’ve agreed to work Thursday so will miss what might be a great day.

@polo - what’s Praz de Lys like in the snow? Have a spare day next Wednesday and thought I might use one of my ‘Ski Decouverte’ days over there - but if it’s treeless and barren it might not be the best day to go.

@andy from embsay, sorry, I'm not polo, but my thoughts: there are plenty of trees at Praz de Lys but also some large open areas (including all the runs from the top lift). You'd also risk missing out on the superb views which are one of the key draws of the area. I would wait for a sunny day, or at least one with good visibility.

Been a while, but as I recall it's mostly fairly low, below the tree line, so would definitely be a good choice in poor vis conditions. I recall having a blast in fresh powder the last time I was there as it seemed to be off the map for most keen off-piste skiers. No idea if that's still the case.

@andy from embsay, steady on, much more knowledgeable people on here, but I am pretty good around the back garden. Only been a few times, best conditions were actually when the lifts were closed....well worth a visit, good variety, and up to 2000m peak. When it's snowing I rarely stray too far / newish territory....but Morilon / Samoens also excellent for some untracked side piste. If we get 30+

@andy from embsay,
It’s great on a powder day and quiet too. The only thing is, I don’t know how much snow making they have. It starts at 1600m ish, from memory, so the natural base will be better than Morzine/Les Gets. If the forecast stays cold then a couple of days of snow should restore some of it.
@polo, as I read the charts, it looks like a couple of days of snow to all levels, followed by a warmer wet period before cooling again. Is that how you see it? It’s looking like a serious amount of precipitation, whatever colour it is!

Thought I’d share a couple of pics from the Passion PDS IG feed:
An overhead map of the PDS circuit which helps explain the route.
I had never noticed that piste marker posts were different between CH and FR. The point to note is the small orange section are on opposite sides which could be confused in a whiteout.

@zzz, very hard to say, too much scatter beyond the 8-9th for any detail. On balance it does look a bit dodgy right now, as there is so much low pressure on this side (atlantic / europe)....will need some luck / changes

@andy from embsay, there is quite a bit of snow making now at Praz de Lys. If I recall correctly they spent a fair amount on snow making, and then the following winter the access road up from the junction on the road up from Taninges was closed, for huge amounts of time following rock falls and repairs.

. As mentioned in the other thread - SC only good in the front face - the back-side, with no snow making facilities, had turned to mud 2 weeks ago and all runs were closed by the end of the week except for the black Barbosine. Start at SC in the morning, laps of the new Conche chair, and make you way over to PD, via Linga, for the afternoon. I think this way you can accommodate everyone in your group inc meeting the non-skier for lunch.

Mmm, I wouldn't be so complimentary about the snowmaking. Only a minority of runs are covered, and when I was there in late January (just after the previous big snowfall), on piste coverage was noticeably patchier than at Morzine / Les Gets.
When there is reasonable natural snow cover, Praz de Lys tends to have better coverage at equivalent heights. When (as now) areas are relying on artificial, I'd suggest the opposite is true.

Not so much on opposite sides, just that the Swiss ones have small left and large right, the French ones have nothing left and small right, so in both cases my rule of "left is less" works, but yeah, if you come across a single pole on its own with a small orange mark and you don't know which country you're in it could be unclear.
In practice the pole markings in CH are very visible, often thicker poles and much better maintained, so the orange part is really noticeable, whereas in France you could be forgiven for not realising that they're there at all, so poorly painted they are.
Never seen that sign though - anyone know where it is?

Snow wise, arriving in a week for a few days.
Am I right in surmising that the off piste is in a bad place due to both poor snow coverage, but also a dodgy base due to rain, frozen to ice early in the season on which the subsequent snow settled?
So even if we get snow, piste is best?
Not bringing any avi kit, so as not to be tempted into being stupid. Wide skis on and to the side of the piste will be fine, thanks.

@Chaletbeauroc,
Martin Solveig is pretty famous if you like pop house.....his big track is Hello, with Dragonette. Bit cheesy for me but will draw a big crowd.
DJ Lady Eliza is well known in Morzine / Les Gets, regularly plays 90's house / D&B
But the one I'll definitely try and catch are Squid Lips, great local cover band that play in Le Biot, Morzine, Grand Ourse, Chamois Hotel....all over. See youtube, but you really have to see them live
No idea on the others.....I'd like to see the AC/DC band but Morgins is in different country far far away, with confusing piste markers

Not necessarily. I did venture into the big wide spaces at the top of the Lindarets bowl last weekend and it was nice and firm, slightly spring-like in the afternoon but not breaking through. Or was that the previous week? Yes, it was, in fact.
But in any case, there's a good base, the January snow is still hanging about even in the village here, and up there there's probably still a good metre of depth, and the sprinklings of snow over the last couple of days won't have hurt it. As far as I know there hasn't been any rain since xmas. It would take a fair dump to be worth getting the fat skis out, but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

@B1g_browner, In CH the piste marker poles on the left side have a short orange top section, those on the right a much longer one. So if you find a single post in poor vis you should be able to work out which side the piste is on. In France the left ones have no orange, the right ones do, but just a short section.
This is pretty standard in most Swiss resorts, but not always the case in other French ones, as far as I know.
