Thank you! Something kid friendly in terms of restaurants - perhaps with a good kids menu or pizza/pasta/burgers etc. it will be our first time in this resort

Welcome to SHs, @Maniemoo. The kids will be fine. Their instructors will find snow for them and kids don't have any preconceptions - no problem with slush. if that's what's on offer! They love any sort of snow.

Also if anyone has any restaurant recommendations in Avoriaz for a group of 13 adults and kids that would be great |
I'll be in Avoriaz last week of March. I will definitely be paying a visit to Les Fontaines Blanche (central). They have plenty of space, but groups including plenty of kids are likely to end up the overflow/family section (not so rustic). They have very efficient service (so don't do reservations), and will do all the usual Savoyarde dishes (fondue, raclette, tarti/croziflette, pierre chaud, vacherin, etc.) and all the rest: pizza, steak, etc.
If you're in the Falaise district, then you should reserve a table in 'La Falaise'. Nothing to write home about, but if it's on your doorstep it's worth a visit. NB They can cater for large groups, but only one or two at most, so reservation is essential - days in advance.

@kitenski, you do realise @Maniemoo, has asked about restaurants in Avoriaz? You've been providing links to Morzine, which may be ok for lunch, but in the evening would involve driving (or the Prodains Express cable car).

@Maniemoo, We have often, over the years, eaten at La Tanière opposite the (top of) the Prodains bubble often in big groups https://lataniere-avoriaz.fr/ - a few years ago had surprisingly good food in Changabang down the slope; although I can't really recall how big it is.

@under a new name, La Taniere appears to be a lunchtime restaurant, with crepes/paninis apres-ski, but no food after 6pm.

Well, La Taniere is in your neck of the woods then. There should be some evening restaurants around that part of town (never been there that time of night meself). Otherwise you should swot up on a map of all the "ascenseurs publics" that enable you to greatly reduce the distance you end up trudging in the snow to and from town centre.
You might also check out the Hotel Les Prodains restaurant at the foot of the Prodains Express cable car - in case getting a cable car to & fro sounds like fun (closes at midnight on Fri&Sat, and 10pm Sunday (9pm other days).

@Maniemoo, Changabang is near the top of the Prodains lift but closes at 1900. Might suit hungry kids looking for burgers and fries. It is a regular for us at lunchtime if we are in that mood.

Another damp squid last night, even at 1800m. In my view the best chance for snow was always sunday, despite what the models are calculating (near zero), there is always a chance of surprise accumulations when sitting under relatively deep low pressure.
Don't suppose this chart will be a surprise to anyone, NW alps is down 5-25% snowfall over the last 50 years. Quite a uselessly wide band, but other areas are worse if that's any consolation.

@polo, thanks for the map! It's interesting that the few areas where snowfall has increased are mostly quite far south, around the Mediterranean.

@denfinella, Med increase probably from a very low/zero base-line and likely caused by extreme weather events.

Just back in the door from our second day. Slopes are certainly less than ideal in areas, but for anyone that has booked the area for the upcoming weeks, there is still some great skiing to be had. We made our way from Lindarets towards Morgins today, but the snow around the Morgins side was exceptionally bad and we turned back. Loads of quiet open pistes though. Back up towards Avoriaz in the afternoon was much busier.

My first time out on the pistes for a while. Skied Super Morzine to the bottom of Linga via Linderets and Plaine Dranse. Short story; the snow is total garbage. Anything that doesn't have snow cannons is either closed or patchy. I've never seen anything like it in February. One more week of French holidays for them to keep things open. Not sure what they'll do after that!

My goodness, this makes for depressing reading. I think its just a mild winter across a lot of Europe this year. Certainly here in Ireland its been extremely mellow with just a couple of exceptions.
Getting very close to writing it off now I guess? Even if it does dump it'll probably be slush cup time pretty soon after.

@elefantfresh, yep, with no base left to speak of, any dump this time of year will quickly melt.
It is possibly the shortest season I've ever seen. It didn't really get going until mid Jan and it's all over, for me at least, by the end of Feb. Of course, there's still some skiing to be had, but nothing that's of any interest.

It's a selective view though - take the My Chery cam instead, or most other cams, and weep.
They did an excellent work with the pistes because of hols, but looking at what happened January this very year, they might then stop maintaining anything but the bare minimum to be able to say they're open...

@patrick!, exactly. The Mont Chery webcam says it all.
The skiing over the next couple of days will be grim. Yesterday's slush frozen into a rock hard icy surface. The few flakes blowing around in the bise; inconsequential.
@polo, I'm very happy. No snow means the parapente and mountain bike season start early. What's not to like?

To be fair in early january it wasn't that they stopped maintaining, there was nothing to maintain. This picture was from 7th January looking up at la Croix.

@timc thanks for reminding me how worse it was back in January.
And yesterday wasn't too bad, if you don't mind spring skiing in February...
The real dump is not expected until this afternoon - and of course it has to be on a Sunday, not a Friday. So I'll be stuck looking at a webcam the whole week.

@polo, hehe,
The main skiing area? The Chablais is a big place, and surprisingly, most of it isn't lift served.
I think one needs to venture beyond the confines of a webcam, or indeed Ranfolly, to have a more global view.
As always, your input on the weather is much appreciated.

Anything south facing with no smowmaking hardly survive the first week of holidays 2 weeks ago when we were there. They even had to take away the ESF lessons race course at Super Châtel on the Friday for safety reasons as some of the ruts were down to grass. It was disappointing for some of the kids that needed an extra day of practice to make the time cut-off to pass their medals. Hate to think what it’s like after 3 weeks of holiday crowds. Hearing PLJ and Linga are still holding up well and will be fine for recreational skiing with much less crowds. We are there again in two weeks and I’ve set expectations among my group that it will be early starts and extra long lunches.

Really not too bad in Les Gets this morning. Nice fresh dusting of snow and back to white trees. Mt Chery nothing, but definitely more white in the bowl. Haven’t been to Morzine side this morning. And yes busy, but not too busy. No lines on Perrieres and Grains d’Or for example. Bit fresh with the wind blowing though…

@zzz, the main ski area of les gets obviously, not representative of the whole of chablais sure, but surely it's better higher up....haven't been for a few weeks though.
As for a more global view, you'll have to wait until I get a long enough pole next week for my new 360 camera (lost the old one, dropped it on the road, was gone 5 mins later). But yeah....we clearly ski different areas and have different amounts of liquid in the glass.

From a holiday maker’s perspective, today was bitterly cold and the snow that was falling rather thin, but we still had a good time. ZZZ was correct about the hard pack underneath being pretty horrendous in places, but there was some great skiing to be had on the edges of the slopes. People pushing the fresh stuff out made for some more enjoyable underfoot conditions. Myself and Mrs Big B, went up the Brocheaux chair a couple of times this afternoon and skied back down ‘blue Velvet’, it lived up to its name with a load of fresh stuff on top making it nice and grippy. Slopes deserted up there too as it was probably too cold for most.
