Just back from dinner in La Chapelle. About 10cm on the car between parking up (1930) and leaving (2230). Very poor visibility through the falling snow.
I reckon this week’s snow will see the area through Feb holidays.
Thursday/Friday looking very nice on the forecast. |
As someone who doesn't live in France, am I right in saying when you say "Feb holidays" is there a week or something nationally across the country where kids are off school etc.

France is zoned into three and the school holidays are staggered from early Feb to early march so you only get max 2 zones off at once.
The worse case scenario is UK half term and Paris (i think they're zone C?) happening at the same time. Yes its busy but its the attitude that used to do my nut.

But one of the middle weeks, with 2 zones off usually coincides with English half term, that’s the one to avoid.

To be fair the British 'half terms' are scattered somewhat as well usually council area/region - i.e. some schools in UK this Feb will be on holiday 13th-17th but the county next to you may be 20th-24th. Not always the case but it does happen a lot

@StretfordEnd1996, at least until 2019, as landlords, our experience was that ~75% of English skiers came in one week, The other(s) were much quieter. THat coinciding with the first (typically) Parisien week was teh worst week of thet season.

Think it's been relatively dry for a good few hours since dawn for most, snowfall a little slower than I thought moving in but it's getting there now looking at the webcams
Should turn a little heavier and stick around for a good 2-3 hours, perhaps hopefully though it may stay around a bit longer than that.
Very dry and sunny and remaining very cold for all following this - perhaps a chance of some mostly spotty and light snow showers around for Friday and then Sun/Mon (the latter coming off the back of a large band of precipitation to the North and East of the area towards Germany/Swiss Alps which mostly fades away by the time it gets to us)

Since I took that pic it hasn’t stopped snowing, complete white out, sometimes horizontal, then slack. Could be in for the day.

Yeah, we had a couple of hours of clear sky this morning but now the snow's back with a vengeance. Not getting much wind here though and it's nowhere near whiteout conditions at the mo.

Just been out with the snowblower, a good 30cm since I cleared it yesterday, the areas not cleared seem to have 60-70cm, even now it's compressed a bit.

Did half a day in La Chapelle Cret Beni. Started snowing c. 1130, didn’t stop. Around 10cm extra on the car when we got back.
Looking forward to a bit of sun tomorrow.

As I've mentioned we are on a family trip to Avoriaz from Saturday. I'm now seeing reliable enough websites talk of highs of -11 on Sunday and Monday. I haven't skied in temps like that in years. There are a good few kids, mostly aged 8-10, in our extended group. If it's, say, -13 on average during the day, will they cope if we really layer up or are those temps problematic?

@Rebelbrowser, depends if there is wind chill or not.
To me, those temps with sunshine is ideal skiing weather. If it’s cloudy and/or windy, then it will be less pleasant but nothing that layers and regular hot chocolate breaks won’t sort out.

@Rebelbrowser, Keep an eye on the wind - at those temperatures if it's windy you need to make sure to cover any exposed skin. If it's sunny with light winds as per forecast then yes, you should be fine as long as you layer up properly, but factor in multiple cafe stops and keep a close eye on the kids, looking out for the early signs of hypothermia.
There's a lot of web resources, like this one on the subject; I suggest you study some of them.

@Rebelbrowser, as with any cold it is the extremities that make the difference. Suggestions therefore would be: make sure you have good gloves and keep them on as much as possible; keep your ski boots tightly fastened and trousers over the top to keep as much snow/ice out as possible; wear a decent hat/helmet (helmets are warmer); and properly dry out gear such as boots, clothes perhaps making use of something that warms and/or removes moisture. I've only once been freezing though!

@Charliegolf, do you mean the things we call tea bags? I use them nearly all the time till very late in the season, and even then OH has them in his pocket for me in case if need.

@Rebelbrowser, the key to having warm hands and feet is a warm core and thighs especially, that’s where the very large blood vessels are. So make sure they have good warm leg layers on especially as kids don’t have much fat on their legs compared to most adults these days. Layers on the core that wick of course as well as being warm. In temperatures like that (it was like that when I was in the Zillertal just before Christmas) and in Canada I wear my Odlo Extra Warm thermals. A light down gilet works well too without adding too much bulk. Also as well as warm mittens I wear liner gloves like the sort you would wear for running in winter.

Oh forgot to say, I’ve got a couple of Hot Rox which are brilliant and they double up as power banks when travelling. Can have it on low or high heat setting and they pump the heat out for hours

Another super day spent under Zore. Powder all day long and not one queue to get on the lift except for the late opening by 15 mins.
Lots of fun in the trees and everybody just using Zore to transit up to Avoriaz and the masses.
Les Gets tomorrow to see what all the fuss is about.
The snow has been fantastic yesterday and today.

Wanting to pull the trigger on Morzine for 2 weeks time, but still nervous.... Can anyone give me a view on the lower morzine areas given there was nothing there 4/5 days ago? Is that a decent base established with the recent snow or is is just a temporary respite?

Hi all. Managed to find some digs in Les Gets arriving on 21st until 26th. Would be great to meet with some snowheads for either a ski or beer afterwards? I'm very much a conservative skier (not politically!), stick to the pistes and reds/blues.

@RetroBod, there’s been c55cm in town in Morzine and temps are forecast to stay around or below zero until the end of the month. If it’s not good enough now it never will be.

I would estimate 60cm of fresh snow on tables by the gondola base at St Jean d'Aulps (1000m) tonight.

@denfinella, he did say circa
But yeah 5-10cm variance possible across different valleys, it’s all good
Some heavy table tops around. Mont Chery off piste got tracked out quickly today. But just the easy access stuff. Different tomorrow without cloud
Just seen a fox run up the road, he can’t take his normal route

Erm … I would walk there if I had the chance to be in Morzine in 2 weeks (I’m actually in Flaine then) … even if there’s no further precipitation between now and then, piste conditions will still be ace from top to bottom.
