Has your daughter arrived okay and how was her trip over the pass? I am doing the trip very late ob Thursday probably arriving in Chatel at around 1:15 am. BA pushed our flight time back which now lands at 11:00pm.

The Cavern as mentioned, also Le Local on Rue de la Plagne has live music every day.

@rondo101, so about 30cm settled at 1000m.....and some more to come, good to have visuals / cucumber half full
@denfinella, we know you like to plan things meticulously
Some subtle short term changes for weekend outlook with low pressure trying to hang on, most flow will hit southern alps but might be a few sneaky showers here
And longer term.....nothing nailed down, especially with strat winds collapsing, the trop model reliability will be low

Lots more snow today, pretty much continual. Around 10cm on the car when we returned to it at PLJ. All lifts open first thing and most of the pistes. Mid afternoon Combes, Cornebois and Chaux des Rosees closed for high wind (I can vouch it was windy!) but Rochassons stayed open, presumably to maintain the link to Avoriaz which had been open all morning.
Local forecast is more snow but less wind tomorrow then dry days with a bit of sun Thu/Fri. Looks like @denfinella has hit the jackpot.

Arrived Sunday and the snow has been a game changer. Agree with post above that Thursday is going to be epic!
On a slightly different topic, hubby has lost his glasses around Morzine / Les Gets today, so if anyone finds a pair. I did tell him not to take his good ones out …

After all my concern this morning all is now well in Super Chatel with the Portes Du Soleil, Conche and Coqs all open. A fabulous day all round and the Portes Du Soleil restaurant open too, the icing on the cake. Just need the Morgins, Torgon and Champoussin sectors to open and the PDS circuit will be complete again. I know there's the small matter of the Gabelou lift but I can cope with a bus.

@kitenski - no free parking near either lift really. Morzine is a pia for parking these days. Your best bet is to just park in the Prodain underground and suck it up. It's not stupidly expensive but is the only way you'll make the most of your extra afternoon. You'll be hard pushed to get hire kit, lift passes and make much of the afternoon as it is. A couple of euros parking is going to more than offset the time you lose on your liftpass cost. Several decent ski shops right near the Pleney on the D338 road.
https://www.ski-morzine.com/en/Services1/Parkings - prices of pleney underground.
I'd buy lift passes in advance - easier to pick them up from the automatic machine outside the front of Pleney lift station and avoids a queue (if there is one) inside.

@polo, I can't take any credit for planning the good timing - booked the accommodation last March so it's sheer luck. I've had my fair share of rotten conditions over the years too
@kitenski, I think the free parking nearest Morzine would be at the Nyon lift base? All Morzine ski passes are cheaper when bought online, but perhaps wait until your plane has landed (or even until you're on resort) before purchasing, otherwise if you're delayed it'll be a waste of money.
General question about the upcoming weekend. I expect the day-trippers / weekenders will be out en masse with all the new snow, so where is likely to be quieter: Morzine / Les Gets, or the wider Portes du Soleil?

See my other reply to you somewhere - daytripper numbers will be offset by the changeover on Saturday (less so for Sunday) so I wouldn't worry about it personally. Ski where you want to ski and enjoy it.

We're in le Lavanchy, a small village between Montriond and the Ardent lift. Arrived sunday late afternoon with no snow in the chalet grounds. As of 5 mins ago there is more than a partially sliced cucumber* of snow on the picnic table in the garden and its started snowing again.
* that's about 10" of snow for anyone not well versed in the cucumber measurement scale. |
Very half full. I trust the other part of it was put to good use in a glass of Hendricks?

Very good point and thanks. Just checked we land at 22:50 and Alamo close at 23:30 which should be sufficient time as I am travelling only hand luggage. I have provided my flight number with my booking and they normally wait if there are delays but not sure what happens if it goes beyond closing time.

I think you’re right, normal January weekends have changed in recent years to being very busy in LG. And this one is going to busier than the new normal I’d say due to weather and pent up demand. I’d say Cases area or Chatel via Ardent early might be better. Or if they open Mont Chery get up there first thing, but only enough for a morning there.
Obviously SjD and Praz de lys good options too when other areas busy, ie weekends.
Dashed right to an extent about changeover day but I have noticed less of an influence locally. Maybe a delayed start to crowds but they come.
Free parking in LG at Perrieres, MC base and Chavannes 1500, but 930 latest, for the latter two.

Don't you find lots of the blacks are being pensioned-off somehow? Some bulldozed into submission and turned into reds (Nyon), others turned into Itineraires or Freeride (the Wall), others always pisted making them effectively red (Grand-Conche), or just plain never open (Bouquetin). I don't think advanced skiers are as high a priority as they once were

So true now you mention it…. Châtel has quite a few blacks that seem retired as cannot designate them as Yellow in France. Some that come to mind are Franchise Maccchi (Linga), Corbeau (SC) and Ombrieux (Morclan). Perhaps it’s all about family appeal or it takes more work and resources to maintain steep pistes which can be better spent on reds in such a vast area.

I'd rather it was that than reducing responsibility/liability/lowering risk-exposure. Or maybe, as in Rennards today, they leave the rope across to discourage the hordes and save some good stuff for the faithful?

@zzz only a ham sandwich I'm afraid. The remainder of it, well....
On the weather front it is currently, and has been for some time, snowing big, fat, flakes. Probably another 10+cms on the picnic table at 970m since the cucumber picture. Hoping for less wind and higher cloud tomorrow. Could be epic on the mountain.

Just back from dinner in La Chapelle. About 10cm on the car between parking up (1930) and leaving (2230). Very poor visibility through the falling snow.
I reckon this week’s snow will see the area through Feb holidays.
Thursday/Friday looking very nice on the forecast.
