@franga,
I was Lucky enough to live there for 3 x years summer and winter. It’s a magical place.
Sooo nice in the summer. Inter season in Morzine can be ‘ interesting’.
Spring is a relatively short inter season as the MTB/VVT attracts folk
From late May/Early June.
Autumn can seem a long inter season (and dark and wet).
Normally happy for the inter season break (I worked in hospitality so ready for the break when the inter season comes)
Beauty about the PdS is how close to Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) and everything that that that brings….: beaches, boats, culture, music, museums etc.
I’ve done other shorter stints living there too. (Extra seasons not all stitched together).
Le Biot, Seytroux, St Jean, all places on the way to Thonnon where you get more for your money property wise but still only 10 to 20 min down the road.
I did Morzine last weekend for £90.
£50 return EasyJet and £40 for a late 2 x day hire car from the French side of GVA.
(Yes I spent money whilst I was there, have rented an apt for a 6 x week stint at the start of the winter but I’ve got a season pass and all my kit out there so just shows how it can be done Fri to Sun night dead cheap if you have a base.
Already some good monthly deals to source out on platforms like AirBnB for next winter

@kitenski - in winter we normally go for the Chamois d’Or or the Grand Laniere (it’s a 15 minute walk uphill walk from town but a lovely family-owned boutique hotel / ski in-out / they have their own drag lift). In the summer we tend to rent an apartment at the Annapurna block or stay at the La Bergerie in Morzine. Have you booked anywhere or are you still looking?

Yep, absolutely. Mrs F and I were having a similar conversation at the Le Copeaux (lovely restaurant for those that are new to LG) last night. The conclusion was that as much as we like coming here in winter (only do long weekends as we tend to go to Meribel with a group at HT / Val at Easter), we prefer it in the summer. Different vibe, different crowd, endless activities to keep us and the teenagers entertained etc.

@franga, we loved Les Gets in the summer. We had a chalet for 18 years and family and friends enjoyed so much time with us there. One of the attractions was not being stuck up a mountain. I wanted easy access to stuff other than skiing. When we bought the plot of land in 1998/1999 we didn’t envisage ourselves flying very often as flights were still then pretty expensive before EJ expanded.

We moved there in 2014-2018 and enjoyed it but missed year round facilities. So we bought a little apartment at the foot of the slopes and we go for weekends or longer all year round and airbnb it when we aren't using it. Happy to cut a month long deal if anyone is interested!
Summer is my absolute favourite though, its just such a cool vibe
Ours was an investment of the heart - we budgeted not to rent it out and to cover all costs ourselves but its been easy/ very successful as a rental and we have lots of friends and cleaners, plumbers etc in town to help which makes a big difference. An apartment in our block, same size, is on the market for 60% more than we paid 5yrs ago

@franga, we bought a couple of years ago. It started as four or five of us on a trip then people dropped out so in the end it was me and one other mate. Very glad we did as our place (2 bedrooms plus separate bunk room) is ok for both of us and the skiing bits of our families (we both have 2xskiing grown up kids snd neither spouse skis) if we ever all went together (we never do). And it never turns into a pseudo timeshare where we need to work out who’s going when.
We tend to do a couple of full weeks and a few long weekends in the winter - both of us live near Skipton and do door to door (apartment is in Morzine) in 7.5hrs, which gives time for a bite to eat at Manchester. Leave home 2:30 pm, through security by about 4:30 (Easyjet Plus fast-track), tea in airport, 1815 flight lands about 2100 Swiss, in the car and away 2145 latest, in the door at 2300.
We’ve been spoiled with the TdF and MTB worlds last summer and TDF again this year, but the cycling and walking is fab too. And we’ll both be spending a fair bit of time this autumn staying/working from there in between rugby world cup games.
Best thing we ever did.

@franga,
I don’t think you’d regret buying something. I’ve been living here for 20+ years and still love it.
Brexit hasn’t made it any easier to buy though. It’s hard to get a mortgage now (if you need one) and of course the £ has tanked.
Plus, you’re limited to 90 days in one hit and 180 days a year.
Property prices went bonkers post covid but I hear have stabilised.

More pistes open in the Les Crosets Swiss sector today. Swiss Wall is listed as "in preparation".
There's also a note on the Dents du Midi website saying that potential reopening of the Champoussin sector is planned for the end of the week beginning 16th - i.e. around next weekend.

Thanks

I think tomorrow actually looks like one of the better days weather wise, Monday-Thursday look poorer for visibility.
I might be wrong though, I’ll wait until someone smarter than me replies!

Headed up to Le Fornet in Avoriaz first thing. Snow good but it was pretty windy and very busy. Queued for 35 mins for the Tour chair to get over the ridge. Then a splendid run down to Lindarets to take the Fleurie over to Chatel. PLJ and PD an absolute delight. Snow very soft at the bottom but practically empty. What a lovely sector this is. Highly recommend the Le Fantasi Ski snack bar at the top of the Pierre Longue chair. Not the fanciest of places but the burgers / pasta are excellent. Not expensive either.

@Ozboy, I made it to Chalet Neuf today, but many of the lifts and pistes were closed. Snow was lovely, although a bit thin and gritty in places. 100% better than the slushy moguls I was skiing at PLJ around New Year!

+1 for that bit of Châtel and Fantaski. Salads excellent there too. Quite dispelled my prejudice against places with pictures of the food serving as a menu! Lovely place.

Do you think it is still touch and go for the lower areas of PDS? I still have not booked my week from 4th Feb. My choice was to book for Avoriaz but if the lower slopes are still in poor shape I just can't face the queues as everyone else heads high. Intereested in your view.

There aren’t often queues at Prodains are there? I’m not sure I can remember any since the new lift opened. There were some at new year first thing in the morning but they were gone by about 11am. So the A bus from Morzine and one lift takes you into Avoriaz anyway.
However it really doesn’t sound remotely touch and go after this week - 50-60cm at valley level, I think?

No, @RetroBod - @franga is I think. We came back Monday evening. Back again on 27/1 - it looks like significant snow to low levels this week then staying cold for quite a while.

Skied loads of fresh side piste today in LG, but only above 1600m is the off piste any good eg top half of the bowl. Pistes are fine. Incredibly quiet due to limited number of lifts, but was great for a few hours. Dropped son to Prodains at 920-930 and already the car park was full and police turning away cars.
Next week is not even a contest....there has been no drama, which is disappointing in a way. There is no way to avoid heavy falls of snow to the lowest levels.

There is a vast area available to ski above 1500m which is where most would ski anyway other than beginners or when homeward bound. Chatel has almost opened most of its slopes including ones with no snow making. PDS has rain, snow, cold, hot and everything in between at times during seasons. The events of 23 Dec were extreme where over 100mm of rain came down in 24 hours (or the equivalent or a meter of snow if it was cold enough - which is exceptional anywhere). The over crowding at new year was the perfect storm of everyone on the busiest holiday period of the year (all countries and regions on holidays at same time) converging on the highest slopes. This is now behind us. Reports of TSD Tour being busy is normal - it’s reputed to be the busiest lift in the French Alps. There are workarounds and now even better as they have made a cattrack allow less experience skiers to descent Cubore into Linderets.

We have been in Les Gets since Thursday night. Despite all the doom and gloom (quite a lot of it justified given the recent rain event and all the anxiety and worry that precedes a European ski holiday) we have so far had an excellent 2 days. Avoriaz has been quite busy because a) it’s the weekend and b) a large number of skiers + boarders flock there because its high / it’s perceived that it’s where you’ll find the best snow. Well not quite. We’ve had some lovely runs on cracking snow at Lindarets, Plaine Dranse and PLJ. Yes, we’ve encountered some ice and thin patches - do I care? Absolutely not. Has it put us off from coming here again? Fat chance. We’ll probably spend some time in the Rainfolly bowl tomorrow if the FL drops fast enough before we head to GVA for our flight home. Overall, a lovely first few days of the 2023 season. More to come in 2 weeks. For those out here next week - enjoy, be patient and take care.

Had a good day skiing today up in Avoriaz. A good few queues for lifts and some pistes were quite busy - guessing a mixture of a concentration of folks looking off guaranteed snow and the fact it’s the weekend.
On personal note I found it tricky. First visit to the PDS and some of the blues I encountered were steeper than those I have encountered before (top of Fornet for one, others much more comfortable) so confidence took a bit of hit. Tomorrow is another day, we go again!
