Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@RobMcQ, surely Chalet Nuef if open should be on the list. I do have a soft spot for that place and Chantel. La Viuex Four restaurant was always amazing if still open!

@denfinella, all too easy to take these kind of comments to heart on these kind of forums, and to not to is easier said than done. But that said, the more people the better the knowledge and generally forums are richer for this, after all it's a forum not someone's private chat.
So please, I for one would look forward to your updates when you're lucky enough to be there Very Happy

Rain rain rain. Here's the report from the kids' afternoon in LG:
- kid #2 loved it, despite the rain in the lowest parts (they've going for Première Étoile).
- kid #1 and his competition did *one* run then headed to a bar for the rest of the day...

Guys, can I just confirm that you can't buy a 6 day Avoriaz only ski pass - you must buy a PdS pass if its for 6 days? Really annoying as I am paying for family members to ski in the whole PdS who will never leave Avoriaz - but my research suggests this is the way and that you can only buy an Avoriaz only pass if its for 1 or 2 days.. €210 for a young kid for 6 days is crazy IMHO. It's a bit cheaper when you buy as a family but not much.

Thanks. It's an option I suppose. Will look. A lot of hassle though, no idea why they don't just let you buy a 6 day at the outset

@Rebelbrowser, If it's like Chatel you can get a card with your first day and then load it up online. I think that you might be able to load up 5 single days when you are back after the first day, would take you 10 mins per card though ....

I suspect you are right. Just doing the maths though, you lose out on the family discount so I think the saving this way would only be about €20. When you factor in the effort and the small chance the kids might venture outside of Avoriaz it's just not worth it. Thanks genuinely though.

@elefantfresh, and if you do decide to get the A rather than the M bus (A much more frequent) then when you come out of the gondola station ski straight down the blue Crôt run to the Grandes Combes chair - it’s invariably empty and takes you to the same place as the Lac des Intrets chair (which is often busy). From the top of those lifts you can ski to the top of the Avoriaz valley where Fornet and Choucas lifts are. The latter allows you to access the Cubore chair that gets you over into the top of the Lindarets valley (avoiding using the Tour chair in Avoriaz which is always busy).

When’s your trip? From the Serma website they only seem to be selling 6 day passes for the first week of the season and the last (ie when Morzine’s closed). First time I’ve seen this.

It does seem very odd!

@B1g_browner, It really is top notch information from people who know the score.
I would do the same if I was on the ground, for sure - but I'm not - and there are a number of people on here who are nothing short of exceptional.
Aren't we so lucky that we snow people think the same and that we have a number of them so eager to push the info out as it comes.
This is why I say things like "we owe you a beer" because we really do - these folks are out there and asking for nothing in return
Imagine if you could stop at bar A and say "can I leave a beer for userX" wouldnt that just be class!

Vin chaud weather. Tuesday of the season coming up? ECM mean anomaly.....I don't know if I could paint a better chart, and well supported by the important UKMO 500mb chart for Wednesday.
These are pretty rare charts.....one or both should deliver......much less of a knife edge than this week was. Colder and snowier first half anyway. Will start to see some consensus tomorrow regarding detail. But Chantel likes it already.

Any of you using buses round Morzine this website is v useful - it shows where the various buses are (not the M bus as that’s a Montriond bus not a Morzine one). It’s sometimes a bit flaky (the U bus disappeared for a few hours the other day) but generally it’s a good way of knowing when to leave the pub and the bus is pretty much where the website says it is.

Im on a BA flight from LHA into Geneva next Wednesday morning. I know it’s 6 days away and the forecast could (likely will) chop and change a bit, but with the current forecast giving heavy snow down to Geneva’s elevation my question is will my flight likely be affected? I’m guessing that unlike a U.K. airport which closes after 1cm of snow that they are obviously more prepared for snow but does anyone have experience or knowledge of how much snow closes Geneva airport?

@PG1972, Maybe a better question to start its own thread as you are likely to draw more feedback. GVA seldom closes and there are probably 100’s of other factors that could cause a delay besides snow. Enjoy your stay in PDS!

Let’s see how well this one ages Cool

Was just checking back, you know for the doubters out there, about when this next pattern change / dump was first highlighted, and about 7 pages back inklings were first noted on the 5th Jan, and then more specific dates of 18-20th mentioned on the 7th Jan. So about 13 days out, which is the same as the last dump, mentioned 28th Dec for 8-10th snowfall. Lucky 13 twice in a row, or mere coincidence. A forecaster loves to ‘be right’ (guilty) but I don’t think there is a special knack to it, anyone can access the data and spend a few minutes each day reading charts to make a call or not. Of course no one can reliably call the general weather 2 weeks out all the time, but sometimes the ducks line up and you can take a decent pot shot.

First bit of good news is sat night into Sunday morning is not as heavy, might be just light drizzle up to 1700-1800m. Certainly nothing as dramatic as shown 5 days ago, steadily decreasing risk every update. Winds also picking up over the weekend, so not ideal.

Secondly there is now unanimous support across the 7 models I watch for some vortex influence, tues-wed. The whole week is looking cold and snowy but there are huge numbers for the early half. It’s going to be properly cold with 1500m below 0c most of the week, -3 to -8c at times, possibly colder.
I think it’s likely there will be some travel disruption mid week. Might just be roads up to resorts, hopefully nothing serious, but I repeat that these are fairly extraordinary charts….it’s not going to be moderate.

I think the original post "there's not much snow forecast" was specifically referring to the airport/Geneva as per discussion rather than the resorts - fingers crossed for next week though. Thanks for your continued postings on the outlook.
