@snoozeboy, I think the 12Z is (relatively) bad, because it shows heavy precipitation on 14-16th Jan with high temperatures for the first two of those three days. Whereas the 6Z showed heavy precipitation from 14-18th, giving two days with a high snowline but then three days of snowfall to low altitudes.

Yep, pretty much everyone, including Châtel heads to Avoriaz because it's higher on the piste map.
...which is absolutely true, the village is 600m higher than Châtel, whereas the skiing, only about 100-150m and a lot more crowded.
Personally, I'm happy to see them go, so keep the above between us, please.

| @kitenski, Yes, you can get from Avoriaz to Chatel (and vice versa). Bear in mind that everybody from Avoriaz, Les Gets, Morzine and half the Swiss side (and plenty from Chatel as well) will be skiing at Avoriaz. Plenty of good skiing in the Linga and PLJ sectors of Chatel. |

@denfinella, yes I see your point.
I was just focussing on this evening's show, plus two more rain to snow events, all three with a lot of uncertainty, which we also agree on.
It could be pretty good or it could be mediocre. I'm wondering whether to ski Châtel, verbier/bruson or leave it for a while longer and do some work tomorrow. I'll decide tomorrow at 8am.

@denfinella, I said plenty should be open below Avoriaz, not 1500m. But now that I know more about where you want to ski…..most of the LG-M skiing is above 1400m….bowl, nyon, chamossiere, mont chery etc. The south facing lower parts of mont chery and Pleney are always a risk, often not skiable all the way down / artificial.
Other factors apart from the weather….if off piste is not good or something you don’t want then you’d probably cover the pisted area in no time, as it’s not that vast an area. Praz de lys Sommand worth a day trip nearby but not on PdS pass, and lots of touring options.

@polo, sorry, I worded my reply clumsily and should have said "I agree that plenty should be open below Avoriaz, but maybe not 1500m." You're right about the altitudes. If the charts were even 1 degree colder then I'd be optimistic down to (say) 1350m which would cover most of the main Les Gets / Morzine bowls. They are very fine margins which is why everything is so uncertain. I'm not expecting everything to be open of course.
Yep I wouldn't expect to spend all 9 days in Les Gets / Morzine. In ideal conditions maybe 3 there, 1 in St Jean, 2 in Avoriaz and 2 touring the rest of the PdS (which I've skied before).
Funny you mention Praz de Lys - I have left a blank day to coincide with one of the Praz de Lys flash sales, and hope to get up there. I spend a day in Praz de Lys at the end of January 2020 in absolutely woeful conditions (one of my 3 worst ever skiing days ever) and want to return.
One day I'll get into off piste but for now I'm content mostly on the pistes. I know you often post some lovely off piste stuff - different slopes for different folks!

Great to hear these reports from the ground - doesn't seem as if this heavy forecast came to pass though does it.
Obviously, anything is welcome but it does appear a bit of a shortfall to what many of the models were suggesting.
Les Gets webcams show cannons running, so that has to be a good thing.
Interesting to see now what they will actually be able to open. I guess they can shovel snow from A to B and open up a few slopes - get lifts turning again.
But at least it looks like hill walking is going to be off the cards next week - I was dreading that.
Lets start those snow dances again.

Looks like some canons running this morning, I’ll standby my earlier comment that I’ll not sure this will allow a huge amount of new slopes to open. Guess it will depend on if they can pack the new snow down and complement with artificial?

Trying to put what I’m learning here to use. Looking at reports this morning, my interpretation is that despite the snow of the last 36 hours, the wet and warm turn mid week means not much will open at lower levels before the weekend but higher slopes should still be good and might receive a top up midweek.
Caveat: I’m new to this

LG just officially opened Gentiane as I was sumrising from yesterday's canon activities.
...and since canons are running higher too now, we can hope the bowl is opening soon. As long as this runs, the domain works for me.
Not sure they can do anything right now about Yeti and Myrtilles though (the two blacks down into the bowl) because it really didn't snow that much yet.

Just deviating form the weather and snow chat ... if anyone is in Les Gets / Morzine on an inclement weather day and is stuck for stuff to do, then I can highly recommend the indoor pool and ice rink in Morzine (part of the Parc des Dérêches complex). They're both ace. There's also ice hockey matches across the season - link here : https://en.morzine-avoriaz.com/hockey-matches.html.

sorry for more accom questions, but if we stayed in Prodains is there anything to do in the evening? Not after mega night life just a restaurant or two and a bar or two would be fine!!
Our plane lands at GVA at 0955 so hoping to get somewhere very close for an afternoons skiing, option B is to drive 2 hours to one of the Trois Vallee resorts, but that prob scuppers much chance of an afternoon ski, hence looks at PdS, but obviously would like more to open up!

Last cable car is midnight on Friday/Saturday, 10pm Sunday and then 9pm Monday-Thursday.

I'd not pick Prodains personally, if you could find something in Morzine town you'd be much better off.
You can save yourself a small amount of time and get on the Pistes sooner if you stop off at Praz de Lys on your way up to Morzine, but you won't save much. Also it's not included in the lift pass.

Are you fixed with Morzine as you could consider Chatel to be with your daughter? Lots to do in village and easy 10 min drive to Pre La Joux if you have a car. Its 1:30h drive from GVA going over the lake which avoids driving through central GVA.

@kitenski,
I quite like Prodains.
It’s a quiet hamlet with brilliant access in the morning to the slopes.
There is the Cable restaurant/bar in the old Telepherique Apt.
The hotel Prodains does good French food and also the Kinkerne bar/restaurant/hotel.
You can venture into Morzine town on the free bus.
The last free bus back from Morzine to Prodains is at 9pm.
So popping into Morzine town for a few Apres beers or early dinner is possible.
Also the Prodains telecsbin runs late at weekends so you can go up to Avoriaz for a beer or food.
Prodains telecsbin runs until 9pm Mon to Fri.
Midnight Fri and Sat and 10pm on Sunday.
Prodains does prob not suit the majority of folk but it’s fine for me.
Bus time table below.Prodains is served by the free ‘A’ bus (green line).

@kitenski,
Unfortunately there is no supermarket in Prodains.
it’s the free and very frequent bus into morzine for either the little Spar near the Morzine tourist office or the bigger Carrefour. Both easy to get to/from.
Or there is a supermarket in Avoriaz.
I’m a decent snowboarder and know how to get from the Avoriaz supermarket back to top of Prodains telecsbin with heavy shopping (some beer and wine) in my small back pack and the cheese, bread and crackers in a shopping bag.
To do it from Avoriaz supermarket with skis or board on use Dromonts drag lift then slowly ski down boulevard Des skier blue piste.
https://fr.calameo.com/avoriaz/read/002827892871be4c28999
Or you can walk through the Avoriaz village and use public elevator in the Haute Forts 2 building (near hotel Dromonts) to get back to top of Prodains telecabin.
