In defence of our wonderful country, shopping at quality specialist local retailers can be done over here as well. Remember that we have had a lifetime to get bored of the way we do things over here. Your average French person is probably similarly bored with shopping in France.

Frosty the Snowman, true, but I have to drive miles to do my shopping that way here, and can't just walk there like I do in France. I regularly use an organic farm butcher, and get my organic veg box delivered. The butchers is a 15 minute drive away though.

It is easy enough to buy local produce in england, you don't have to follow the herd in their 4x4s and people carriers to Tesco, you know..........

the ice perv, not here it isn't. I hate shopping at Tesco, but I no longer have a butchers, a fishmongers ,a greengrocers ,or a bakers because Tesco built a store half a mile away. My local shops are now an Indian, a Chinese, 2 pizza shops and an off-licence. I still supported the local shops until they closed.

Have just booked Xmas in Saalbach Austria, a Nielsons catered chalet for 3 =£3k. Don't think that you can get much at Christmas for much less unless you risk last minute.

hayley t, Loved it. We had a few problems, including the death of a very close family member while we were there, but Jon adored the place and was "adopted" by Rachel Q and her group whose skiing style and speed he found much more to his taste than our "old and knackered" style.
We did Kitz for 3 Christmases. To be honest, though we loved the Tyrol, there are very few smoke-free areas to sit in and Bev and I will cough till we are sick if exposed to smoke, so that is out for now. The Juliane is smoke-free. I think the skiing is a bit better at Sallbach too. We certainly had some brilliant days last year. I love the town and ambiance of Kitz, but the skiing is better at the "circus".

£1350 pounds for a single room in Club Med Tignes - but this is at half term (as my friends' wives are all teachers!) and is all in, with the superb Club Med food referred to earlier and the free bar.

Chris Bish, Helen Beaumont, we've managed nearly 20 the other way round; i look after the cash (in so far as anyone does). The trick for us is no joint bank accounts; to distressing for me to see where the OL spends her money.
Kitzbuhel does seem to have a lot of smokey bars and restuarants; is it worse than elsewhere in Austria, and why (Chris Bish seemed to suggest that Saalbach is better)? My impression is that these continental types all smoke like lums (except presumably Italy, until the novelty wears off).

In the last four years we've done 8 ski holidays and haven't yet broken the £500 per head barrier ( less than £375 twice but the accommodation was close to camping! )- and always at New Year or Half term. Admittedly we don't do the wild nightlife with an 8 yr old in tow, blindly ignore the car wear and tear factor and adopt the Helen Beaumont, approach and then some to catering including catering for 18 in ADH this year. For us it's worth it for the extra weeks - but appreciate our holiday wouldn't suit everyone. OTOH a friends son has been 'offered' a ski trip at school for £1050 which to me is a mind boggling amount to pay for an 11 yr old to find out if he likes it...or worse doesn't

Annie, particularly in our Easter trip this year, when we finished a little earlier in the day, I enjoyed the catering bit. We all took our turns at cooking, including our children, and we ate out a few nights too. I even tried out a couple of new recipes from the cookbook I took with me.

Just to be a little left field, next year our skiing bill will be (in euros) seven figures long. This includes the purchase of 3 apartments in Chamonix (which I do hope some SHs will help contribute towards in return for some mighty fine accomodation) and a permanent relocation to Geneva.
Dedicated or what??
But more realistically, I budget £110 a day on average. This makes my average season cheaper than (allegedly) some football club's season passes. How reasonable is that?

Got a quote from Ski Independence for 2 weeks in Big White in March at £1,000 ea, which I think is pretty good. Realised its cheaper having the whole 2 weeks there, rather than 1 in BW and 1 in Sun Peaks, as they have deals like pay for 12 nights, get 14 nights. That together with the cheaper season lift pass makes it a bit more possible. And we can have the odd day in Silver Star as a change. Now just got to get it past the OH

Cost of my last ski holiday to ski the off-piste steeps in the Dolomites involved bringing a favourite guide with us from France, so this upped the price.
We skied 2.5 days by ourselves plus 6 days with guide. Cost:
8 1/2 days skiing in the Dolomites (each for 6 of us):-
Petrol and Parking at airport £12
Easijet flights- £45 + skis £15 (shared bag)
Taxi Transfer to Arabba going out (guide took us back on way home) £30
***Hotel 1/2 board 7 nights plus 1 night in catered mountain hut £245
full Dolomites ski-lift pass £140
Guide for 6 days £220
Plus tip £20
Guide petrol (transfer 8 hours each way and during holiday) + use of his van £30
Hotel for guide half board £32
Lunches and drinks for guide £15
Lift pass for guide £13
Total £812 plus lunches and beers.

Well, that one was just a guess. If I took it off and lumped it with the other unguessed lunches, the holiday would be a round £800. About £315 of that for the guide and only£485 our own costs. Just add lunches and that's it for 8.5 days - not bad I'd say, but we've done it cheaper in the Haute Morienne with the same guide in his home.

Our last ski holiday cost around £1300. We went to Ruka, Finland for 1 week and the cost included flights and transfers and half board accomodation in a lovely hotel. We waited until we got there to get our lift passes, and all have our own kit.
That was for 2 adults and one child-next year we are going to Austria and the same basic package is costing just over 2k-not helped by the fact that we are having to pay for another adult as our Daughter will be 12!

Our Christmas ski holiday is always expensive - we take our sons and enjoy excellent food and wine in a 4 star hotel, usually pay just under £900 each, without ski passes, lunch etc. Desperately trying to find something like that in Ischgl or Obertauern at the moment, but some of the hotels are well over £1000

Although you can go to places like Killington pretty cheap from Dublin.
