Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks all for the feedback - it really does help come up with a short list of 'potentials' to try back to back. It is not easy to find a ski to do it all and buying more than 1 pair would end up in divorce!

Len Holgate, did you mean the Rossi Z9 Ti? If so I skiied on them for a day in March in fresh snow both on piste and at the side and really enjoyed them, in fact, with a 73mm waiste, I will add them to my list as well and give them another go.

Kramer, It's a very forgiving ski alright, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Just like the Ford Escort. Great for getting from A to B without much drama.

But if someone came to me wanting to learn the finer points of the racing line around Oulton Park, balancing the car, high speed performance driving, the first thing I would do is to put them in a car with stiffer suspension, more accurate steering, uprated brakes etc. etc.

So for the majority of holiday makers who are just recreational skiing, they work just fine from cafe to cafe.

But if you truly want to improve technique etc. then they will start to limit you.

Horses for courses.

Kramer, I skied a Head Monster (im75 I think ?) in Avoriaz in April. Fine for slush busting but pretty dead on piste (compared to my K2 Axis-x).

I skied a Stockli GS ski the next day and it was superb on the piste but predictably trickier off, although in light enough snow perfectly ok. I'm hoping the Stormrider XL will split the difference but I wouldn't mind trying the Recons as well.

brian, I'm trying to get into off-piste more and more, and as I'm a gentleman of a larger figure, I think that I need something with quite a bit underfoot.

Which model?

The Stormrider AT is described as an "easy GS ski" by some reviewers, and an all-mountain ski by others.

brian, Yes v.v. speedy. If you are looking at the XL, see if you can get hold of the AT to test the difference. Foam core and not as stiff as the XL. I'm very pleased with my AT's Very Happy
The AT will be no good for you if considering joining the Lardies though Laughing

IMO, the XL's will be right for you, the AT's may be too soft in the flex wink

Here's my AT's and also ise's XL's (with Touring bindings). The AT's are 76mm waist and the XL 75mm waist.

snowbunny, those Bandits just look tame by comparison Laughing

I take it you bought them en Suisse ? RRP is 799CHF on Stoeckli's website. That's about 30% off S+R's price. Wonder if there's any left at sale prices over there now. What happened to ise and his on the spot Swissness anyhow ? Puzzled

Well, I was unsure about posting the link to the pic wink

Yes, I purchased in Switzerland, nowhere in the UK carries the AT, I managed to get -10% on a ski/binding package. There may well be some sale stock left in Stoeckli stores. The nearest one to Geneva is in Vevey, if you fancy a quick trip!
ise has not posted here for some time.

To the original question, get a longer Recon....181..then try it against the XL but you will need to be 200lbs/90kgs and very good to get that working to its best...

Then if they don't work, scale down to a B2 which is a safe ski, wouldn't let you down but wont get you up either...

Or for a fatter ski think B3 or Outlaw...

To summarise, for you

Recon,
XL
and

B2

JohnQ doesn't read this forum very often, so I'll post this for him. He skiied on B2s for two or three years and really liked them. This winter he bought some Apache Crossfires and loves them and wouldn't go back to B2s now for anything. His Crossfires are much more responsive, and they look very cool too snowHead

brian,

Looked at your other posts and I think you might be between lenghts on the XL... I'm about a stone lighter and I think I'm just running out of ski at 174 here. But it is a stiff ski and does handle the ice very well at this lenght...I just feel its just a shade wrong for me for what I want to do.. Thats not stopped me having some brill days in deep stuff but I'd test it yourself to see how you like it. Thats why I posted about the Outlaw at 181 or the Recon at 181 type lenghts.

For me next year I will want to be on the 8800 or Outlaw and spend all the time looking for interesting stuff. I'd also give the Snake BC a go as I'm pretty sure all Stockli skis can handle the ice if need be... not that you'll want to spend too much time there....!!!!!

I knew there was a reason to go back to Engelberg... Laughing
