Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. We left arc 1950 a few hours ago. I didn’t see anywhere to hire but masses of places to buy of course. Maybe insurance will cover the purchase?

Hard to say when your bag will arrive. In the past air France have delivered the next day, lufthansa on the other hand took 3 days to deliver to the dolomites. I expect it will come the next day.

Sorry but I know no where to hire salopettes, but as it looks like it will be warm and dry tomorrow you will probably gey by in jeans or tracksuit bottoms

Just having a quick drink in the Igloo, can't believe how well the snow has faired. Lots of places seem to have suffered snow slippage etc, and some stuff is closed, but due to the fact that the place is quite empty, all is good Eh oh! Eh oh!

Just had a trip over to 2000. The snow over there is good but a lot busier than the vallandy to1600, side probably because a lot is closed over there. There was a huge queue for the Bois de ours lift coming back. Due to the avalanche risk combourciere is closed
And the sun is shining, but guess who forgot the sun cream!

Some photos from a sunset stroll around Arc 1800. The little piste running from our apartment struggled with yesterday's rain, but still skiable down the margins. There's enough snow around the village to remind you it's the ski season, even if it feels like late April rather than December. And there's always a nice view down the Tarentaise after the sun goes down.

Forecast for the next couple of days is sunny and warm. Should be nice piste skiing for Christmas Day Happy

I'm going to 2000 in a few weeks, seems like a lot of runs are closed. Was really looking forward to going up Aiguille Rouge, what's the reason for that not being open?
Are we expecting things to open up more?

Also, what piste map do you guys use for Les Arcs. The one on their website looks a bit difficult to follow especially to check out which runs/lifts are open. E.g. how do I quickly check out which black run is open?

@viciousvulture, avalanche risk is very high, and there will be a lot of work to make safe the Aiguille Rouge which was blasted by a huge quantity of snow over the last few days.

Install the Yuge app to get info about piste and lift openings.

Just booked for Les Arcs in March with a mate at Ski Beat's Dahu chalet. We've stopped in Plan Peisey before but not where this chalet is. Quick question, is it possible to ski from the top of the Parchey chair to either Grizzly or the new Vallandry gondola, so we can miss out having to go up the Peisey chair, it looks like it on the piste map but it's not entirely clear which are up and which are down pistes Very Happy

@viciousvulture, very high avalanche risk today. When we skied down the red from varet this afternoon the piste bashes were busy clearing the avalanche debris that had come down from the aiguillé rouge. It may or may not open soon. There is a fair number of runs open, but no blacks. Off piste is a Nono.

The pistes that were open today had a mostly good snow cover and firm snow. After lunch we had a run down reche. The second pitch still had firm corduroy, so firm I had to check my fillings were still my teeth. It was a wonderful run.

Not much in the way of lift queues but the pistes were quite busy with lots of nervous beginners.

Sorry @stevew, I’ve never used the parchey lift so I’m not sure you can ski across. I doubt it however. The peisey lift isn’t much of a problem and gets you into most of the resort

As @johnE said, good piste coverage above 1800m (didn't ski below that level), although very firm due to the freeze on top of the tremendous rain we've had. But when the sun softened the snow it was all rather lovely, and with the Spring-like temperatures a good opportunity to enjoy time on restaurant terraces in between sessions cruising the pistes. A nice way to celebrate Christmas Day.

I've never seen so much avalanche activity though, which was a bit sobering especially on pitches that I'd normally ski without too much concern. The pisteurs are doing tremendous work to keep things as safe as possible in the conditions.

Snow coverage on piste is pretty good.

But avalanche activity is everywhere.

A day to savour the fine weather and Christmas joy!

Merry Christmas from Jane and me.

Always nice to get first lifts on Christmas Day, it was a pretty firm start but the sweet spot this morning seemed to be between 11:00 and 14:00 with some really nice conditions. Not too busy either.

As Rob said, it was quite sobering to see all the avalanches in areas I wouldn't think twice about skiing. The off piste is going to be a bit sketchy this season!!

The snow is thinner today, softer and a few rocks are poking out. There is still a lot of good skiing to be had nevertheless. We have just come down bosses in valandry and despite not living up to its name and having a couple stones was still an enjoyable run.
It is raining very lightly at the moment with a bit of snow high up. May snow overnight.

It's raining here in 1600. But it was wet snow when we went past the arpet at 15:00 . So i suspect the snow line is around 2200m

Day started off bright and got progressively cloudier as the next weather band moves in. We had a few sprinkles of rain at 1800m late afternoon, and the snowline is forecast to drop so we might get a modest amount of fresh snow overnight at resort level. Not sure this will make a significant difference to conditions, but everything helps...

Windy at the top of the Aiguille Rouge

The local Freeski Academy put in a rutline. Good option when the off-piste isn't so great.

A week ago there was snow on the valley floor. Now the snowline is racing up the sunny side of the Tarentaise.

Snow level in the 1950/2000 bowl was fluctuating up and down around 1950m this afternoon. Now raining in 1800, the 1650/1850 side was feeling more trashed this afternoon and since it’s now raining it’s probably not getting any better. I’d say rock skis only on this side now. Or insured rentals…

The 2000 bowl was holding up pretty well, but busy, busy, busy this afternoon. That said, lift lines weren’t bad, just felt like a lot of people on the pistes.

It rained all night and looking out of the window the weather still looks poor with fog and limited visabilty so we are taking it easy today just looking out the window waiting for the visibilty to get better. Then I looked at the live cams and see everywhere else in Les Arcs has bright sunshine and it looks good. It looks as if we are simply in the valley cloud and a hundred metres above us is sunshine.

Now to get ready and get out.

@johnE, Nice and bright now, just had a coffee at valandry, pretty green now but the home run looks okish. We have had a couple of injuries at the chalet this week I think because of the conditions. We have not bothered to go out for a few days, let the pisteurs smash out the ice balls... hoping the season will recover !!

Weather gorgeous today, but some runs very very icy which was pretty horrible, especially as there seem to be huge crowds of people out today around 1950 and 2000. I ended up coming in early - too many people out of control on the ice and I felt like it was only a matter of time before I got taken out!!

The rain at 1600 had frozen into the snow and the pistes below the level of the arpette were distinctly hard today. In fact as I cruied down Combetttes to cross over to Cachette I noticed about a dozen cragfast beginners on the slope. Higher up things were nicer and cholcheret was good. The pistes were relatively quiet but when we went over to Arc2000 the story was very different - OK the snow was better but the pistes were crowded and there were some massive lift queues. I waited over 10 minutes at Plangettes. The snow up on Grand Col was very nice and the moguls on Refuge starting to develop. It looks as if the snow base is thin but really dense. I think it will provide a good base for the rest of the season.

As the day wore on the pistes seamed to get more and more polished. With the crowds I was suprised to see no blood wagons. Take care

Superb hero snow above 1950 in beautiful sunshine today, even the chopped up between piste was skiing lovely. Came below 1950 on the way back to 1800 and it was sideways skids on polished boilerplate.

As ever the sides of the runs were the place to be. 1950/2000 bowl very busy and the lift lines were the usual holiday nonsense. And a lot of third year skiers skiing way too fast for their skill level.

We’ve had a broken wrist in our group. So yeah, sketchy as low down. If the freezing level had been 500 m lower last night it would have been a game changer. We’re treating it a spring skiing.

The good news is that it's cold tonight and they have a lot of snow making running.

The bad news is that the resort will be even busier. There seemed to a lot of people with suitcases in Arc1600 this afternoon and when we went to Mile8 for some swimming and "wellness" early this evening the navette was rammed with people with suitcases having just got off the funicular.

The snow making last night made a slight change to the pistes but many remain very firm and polished. It was noticibly very busy on the slopes this morning - perhaps as busy as I have ever seen Les Arcs. Looking at the crowds we decided to ski across to Vallandry this morning thinking this will give the best combination of less busy pistes and good snow from their excellent snow making. The upper parts of Belvedere were very crowded so we stopped for an early lunch at the rilax restaurant - 9€ for a bowl of soup with miniture cheese on toasts to accompany it.

At this point I decided that I couldn't stand the crowds and thought I'd call it an early day. Oddly during lunch time the crowds cleared and we had some good skiing down the reds into the Village. But I did call an early stop to the day at 15:00. My wife and son then went over to 2000 where they reported descent snow but huge lift queues. Though we haven't been over to La Plagne on this trip the essential passes are proving their worth with the prioity lift queues. It is suprising how few people have them. I'd guess that the ratio of "classic" to "essential" passes is at about 50:1. Few people seem to buy passes that entitle them to go over to La Plagne and fewer of those, I suspect, are going over.

A couple of hopefully easy queries for the collective! (I am part of a group of 6 & will be arriving in 1800 Jan 14th for a week)

* I am a lucky enough to have a retired chef as part of my group (and he even still enjoys cooking recreationally!), its been 20 years since I was last in 1800, do we go food shopping locally or is the price difference of BSM enough to warrant a taxi back up the mountain?

* We will be coming up by Ben's Bus and staying in Le Belmont, is it worth dragging our gear through town (collecting the keys & a few drinks on the way) or should we hop on the shuttle bus?

@WestCountryBoy, I doubt the price difference between bourg st Maurice and arc 1800 will warrant the cost of a taxi which will be over 100 euro but the greater choice might. However, the cost effective option is to get the funicular down and the town navette around to the Super U / Intermarché area. Remember to have big bags to carry everything. If we do this everyone has a big rucksack.

Sorry I cannot help with the Belmont question largely because I don’t know if a shuttle bus goes to the Belmont or where bens bus drops off. If it drops off at le charvet then I’d get the navette around to villards but it may terminate at villards anyway.

Just called into the refurnished arpette for a going home drink. They appear to have repositioned themselves into the follie deux market
The restaurant and selve service areas have swapped over. The restaurant has the views of the valley and sel service around the fire.
They are still having teething problems when we were there there was no hot chocolate coffee or tea. You had to buy drinks at the outside bar and take them inside to drink.
The drinks were expensive - 6 euro for a vin chaud
There were dancing girls.
Many people stopped, took a photograph and skied on.
It looks as if it will be very popular with children.p

Today we toured the slow lifts of les arcs: Combettes, Clocheret, lanchettes, plan des violettes and drosets mainly to avoid the queues and people and we rewarded for our efforts. The snow was firm but the people absent. Incidentally we had done charmettoger a few times during the week simply because I prefer it to the transarc. And of course we have done the grand col. The snow to villaroger did not look inviting so we’ll miss out on the Replat. Are there any slow lifts I’ve forgotten?

We were amazed by the snow cover down to the bottom of plan violets- almost complete cover. A sign on the aiguille rouge piste warned of icy snow and they weren’t wrong. Fortunately we were more or less the only people on the pistes so could turn where we wanted. It was exiting stuff. If your edges are sharp I’d recommend a trip down it this week.
Plan violet was also free of the usual spattering of stones.
