The BBC love to jump on some doom-mongering and push the 'climate crisis' at every turn.

They do love a good headline, but they also seem to think sometimes that showing the requisite "balance" means giving air-time to the vanishingly small minority of scientists who take the view that there is no climate crisis. Maybe the same ones who believe that vaccines are a conspiracy.

We have had some brilliant "snowcasters" over the years here. Some, sadly, have been driven to distraction, and ultimately away, by the inanity of some of the responses. |
Who exactly?

I like the caption by the second photo: "Skiers at this resort in Seefeld in western Austria are urged to stick to the slope" - it is a white ribbon surrounded by grass, so I don't think they'd be doing anything else

@kitenski, but, exactly as with @BobinCH's Times story there are a few things going on IMV.
1. OK, so there's the underlying reality that the dates and altitudes of reliable skiing are shrinking. This is not news. Any Maire worth her salt should have been working for really quite some time to establish her resort, if possible, as a 3, or better, a 4 season destination.
If we take Chamonix, only as I know it best these days, when we started renting apartments we could easily count on total voids in May and November when we could do noisy works. In our latter years we would have to block weeks off if we knew there was going to be any disruption.
I think that's partially a natural evolution, as people see that there's lots of appeal outside the main winter and summer seasons, but also efforts on the mairie to have a very active calendar of high profile events from the end of the winter to the very end of the Autumn. Equally, Les Gets, f'rinstance, seems to have done a very strong job on mountain biking.
2. A faltering start to the season is not at all unheard of. Last year not as bad as this year but I refer me learned chums to https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=156649&start=80 @zzz, Tue 28 Dec, 21, "Absolutely hosing it down with rain. As Bob says, a truly dreadful forecast for the next couple of days, followed by beer on the terrace weather for the weekend. The snowpack, that was magnificent a week ago, just a shadow of it’s former self…." ...
In 1933 the Kitzbuhel town council ruled that they couldn't advertise as a winter sports resort for xmas as the snow wasn't reliable enough ...
But, equally, point 1. The season is shrinking.
3. Is this news? Of general interest to the uk population? I submit not and it's a product of winter silly season to need to fill website pixels that have the Times and the BBC going all hair-on-fire clickbait on a dodgy season start. As happens every time there's a dodgy period. "End of skiing". (I first saw this in 1988, again in '89 and '90, etc.). "You'll never ski again". etc., etc., ad naus.
Hopefully they'll look very silly come the end of next week (doigts croisee).

I don't get the doom and gloom. Xmas and early Jan have always been a lottery. This year we've lost and next year we might win. If you book a holiday in this time then you have to roll the dice and take what comes.
People need realise that they're not "entitled" to snow.

We might fight back with a late equaliser or even an injury-time winner before we declare that we've lost this year's early Jan match ...

Must say as my kids will both have finished uni next year I think we’ll plan to go a week later - not because the snow will necessarily be any better, but if it’s not most of the crowds will have gone home.

its mildly (pun possible intended) unfortunate that a warmer rainy spell has hit some areas just before at the busy Xmas new year period. had it been a week or two either side when quieter the I doubt mush would have been commented on outside those most interested.
So some resorts, seems to be Grand Massif worst effected, have had a week or so wiped out and the volume of guests around has trashed surrounded resorts / higher pistes which has exacerbated things in the worst effected places.
The outlook for next week (i.e 8th 9th onwards) does seem good though with lower temps, so snow cannons can get to work, and a week or so of snowfall on and off around the worst effected areas.
It probably wont be an epic ski conditions year, but its far from the doom and gloom some would have you believe, and hey its only the start of January!

Still skiing to village level in Champagny at 1,250m (just) but skiing here goes up to about 3,180m on the Bellecote glacier

Well it was that relatively small region that was worst affected (i.e. had the heaviest rainfall) out of anywhere in the Alps. Grand Massif, Portes du Soleil, La Clusaz, Megeve are really the four major ski areas that were decimated, plus several smaller domains nearby. You could add Chamonix to that list, but obviously there is a greater proportion of higher altitude skiing there so it hasn't been quite so disastrous.

The time I'm thinking of - it was Val d'Isere I now think - ALL the lifts were closed for a few days and walking forbidden in some parts of town. All the lifts in Arabba were closed for days after Snowmageddon too - not only were they buried in snow, the workforce weren't there. Even those who could have got there (and all the passes in were closed) were roped in to clear snow off school roofs and the like before they collapsed. And it was very wet snow, setting quickly like concrete. Powder, it wasn't.

It’s a good point about the cost of skiing. That is what is going to kill it most quickly for the British market.

Meteo france still very unclear about the FL next week. It seems it will rain all week but at what level will it snow? Some of the temperatures they are coming up with say between 1500 and 2000 m, which is not good as that is exactly where we need a good dump. For info they give valley temperatures as 13-14C highs all week. You can do the math to see where the FL is under that scenario.

It currently looks like the temperatures in the western Alps are going to fluctuate quite a bit with rain to snow to rain to snow at lower levels.

@kitenski, sorry. (I don't think I quoted any pictures though? Aware I'm further derailing the thread by replying!)
I reckon a 1500-2000m freezing level is a bit pessimistic and it should be a few hundred metres lower than that during the heaviest snowfall, but still several days away so will need to wait and see. Meteo Alpes currently suggests 1600m dropping to 1100m for Sunday into Monday for northern French Alps (edit: snowline, not freezing level).
Further east (on north side of Alpine ridge) it looks colder but with less precipitation.

I'm assuming this will also mean the snow above the snow line will be quite heavy and therefore we should not expect a vintage powder fest, but more of a base at least?
