Yes, that was me, above on this page. |
I only pay attention to your ski calendar ladies posts
Speaking of which, surely the absent distraction of good conditions warrants a return of these?

Hottest 1st Jan on record in France yesterday. Following a record 2022 for temperatures. It is all pretty worrying really. The temperature hasn't gone below zero at 2200 meters since the 30th Dec, even at night. The ground is bare below 1800m and is pretty warm too. If we get some snow during January then the ski resorts will be able to stagger through the 6 week holiday period but I suspect we'll have an even earlier finish to the season than last year (succession for heatwaves from April 2022) as the established base won't be there.
That said, I've stored my alpine skis now and won't be able to access them before early Feb, so it will probably be the mother of all dumps next week !

I think lots have been spooked by the various images from the north western French areas (which are popular here as easy to access either by car from UK or from Geneva) however these conditions dont extend to the whole of the alps. Even in France places like Serre Chevalier seem to have done OK. further east in Switzerland & Austria most places even low ones are pretty much fully open. The mild dry weather pattern does seem to be breaking up and there will almost certainly be some snow, maybe not enough to rescue those French areas badly affected by the rain but in most places there is a decent base so conditions will rapidly improve

Have a sense it may not be quite the breaking of the dam yet, or at least favourable conditions will be quite localised and short term. Lets see. |
Always a "note of caution", a "less than expected", "quite mild", etc. This is shaping up to be a sh*t season, unfortunately. At this rate we're going "hopefully late Jan should have snow"! Soon it will be March and the white whale of a "season starter" will still be out there

We had minus 3 at 08:00 this morning @ 1400m, along with a heavy frost and we still have plenty of snow on the ground and roofs all around us, and piste skiing is very good, and XC in the valley is superb!

For those old enough remember Jan 1999 , it was very poor until end of Jan when over 3ms of snow fell over a two week period resulting in the devastating avalanche at Montroc , sadly 12 died . I was skiing in Meribel at the time and it’s was a case of opening the curtains every morning to “oh it’s still snowing” . A lot can change in a few weeks and I’m sure it will .

In Scotland? Wow, who knew? Sounds on a par with the famous Lewes avalanche of 1836.
I skied from the start of November to May that year but I wasn't in Montrose so maybe missed the poor conditions.

My first ever time skiing abroad was Meribel in Jan 1999, drove from Yorkshire in an LDV minibus and with a broken rear window on the return trip

@südtirolistdeutsch, seems to be an overly dramatic point of view. I believe you are in Kitzbühel. I can remember a number of years where there was not enough snow to run the Hahnenkamm in late January. Given that the race route is mostly open (the valley run is but the upper ski route part not) it would seem likely the race will run as planned. The snow might be hard & icy but that is ideal for the racers even if not for mere mortals. Snow is on the way and will improve things. My favourite Kizbühel run - Ochsalm, very rarely opens before mid January as it needs good natural snow. Whilst I agree conditions are not the best (I havent bothered to go as new year is usually too crowded and not worth the effort except in really good conditions) and we dont seem to be in for a great season (which is in line with the various long term winter forecasts) I suspect we will have a decent enough one certainly in the more eastern & southern alps. Enjoy what is there, afternoon beers on the terraces are better in warm sun.

@munich_irish, I'm in Kirchberg/Kitzbühel and it's great. The North facing pistes are firm and great for carving. The rest of the slopes are brilliant fun, soft spring snow and as the day goes on slushy bumps. My family and i are seriously having a great time skiing, the weather is warm the suns out. Zero off piste but I'll get that later in the season after more snow eventually falls. Its not so great for beginners and intermediates but if you can drive your skis es ist fantastisch

ah I see. I don't know Montrose apart from there was an Earl so don't know if it is avalanche prone or not. Clearly Montroc is more likely.

Just shows how much fluidity, uncertainty and variability is in these forecasts more than a few days out. The temperature spread at 850hpA will baffle the most competent of statisticians.

Thanks for the advice. I've cancelled the three trips I have booked between now and March and have just put the skis and boots in the loft.

Heading to ADH in a couple of weeks, just heard they have opened the tunnel run, which I may well still give a wide berth. Top up will be great before I arrive, but all looks reasonable certainly above resort level… I’m not giving up on the season just yet

100% agree with all of the above - having a blast in La Plagne at the moment, and were lucky to still make fresh tracks off the glacier this morning.
There's lots of doom-mongers out there - it's clearly not the best of season starts but with the right attitude there's a lot of fun to be had

Light snow overnight in West of the NW French Alps. SL 1900 meters around Grenoble, 1700 meters in the Savoies but just a freshen up, about 1-3cm.
The rest of the week should be fine, perhaps a bit of snow on Thursday then sustained snowfall all next week. starting on Sunday with a lull on Monday then through to the 16th Jan. According to Meteo France with a return to colder temperatures.

Yep some areas are struggling at the moment, but not everyone. https://www.weathertoski.co.uk/weather-snow/ - Serre Chevalier
Lots of good skiing to be had in Italy at the moment.
Snow looks to be on the horizon too.
