Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking very warm for the NW French alpes over the next few days.
Potential cooling from 27th with some light snow.
Some models predicting big snow for 1st April but this could just be April's fool this far out.

So Bergfex, Snow-forecast and Wepowder all showing significant snow with low temps (and high wind) this weekend.

Too early to get excited?

Looking like some decent colder weather and precip coming over the weekend into next week. The GFS model for schladming, east end of northern alps, looking ok for next couple of week (unless you like long sunny spring days), maybe some moisture lower down at times but snow higher up based on this. https://wetterzentrale.de/en/show_diagrams.php?geoid=2441&model=gfs&var=201&run=0&lid=ENS&bw=1

Tuesday looks to be the day but I see rising temps on some of the sites from Wed, possibly leading to rain to the top of most resorts?

Ah its definitely a positive development, just not quite the extended powder bonanza I had hoped for when looking at the snowfall figures initially. Anyway that temp may just be an anomaly?

And if I'm reading things right it may stay cooler further East for longer, albeit with less snowfall

Would be interested to see Henri's take (hopefully later), or anyone else's for that matter. I have a reasonably broad window.

@8611, depends where you are heading?
A this time of year temps and FL can vary massively from day to day. Nothing is guaranteed could have epic powder one day then frozen crust or claggy slush the next. Just have to get lucky and head as high as possible

Yep. Will refresh pistes in any event. But I think powder will have short shelf life. Thinking either Engelberg if I can get out early or Solden if later in week.

Was in solden yesterday, wet at the mid stations on the gondolas. Glacier was still in good condition but obviously hellish busy because everyone was there.

Just started to snow at 2000m in Obergurgl, light at the minute though

Good point - heading to Val Cenis at the weekend. Driving on Friday, and overnight in Beaune, then head for VC Saturday morning for a week.

At the moment it is looking like an excellent end / lead in to the end of the season, at least in the North Western Alps and Northern Alps. So looks like a lot of snow for the higher French resorts and decent amounts for Switzerland and Austria too. It also looks to be cool enough that it'll be snow and not rain and hopefully that holds.

Currently in Mayhrofen, been snowing for 24 hrs, had 40cm so far, snow line down to approx 1000m, and -3 at Penken today. Visibility is poor but powder is great, going 2 be good tomorrow if the snow clouds clear and the sun come out

Looking at La Plagne, I'm starting to see a few slight differences between snow-forecast (GFS) and Bergfex (ECM) for this weekend. They've been pretty aligned up to this point. Currently, Bergfex still has high volumes of snow for both Fri and Sat, with more coming on Saturday. Snow-forecast seems to have reduced the amount coming on Saturday, with the main dump on Friday.

Seeing similar for the Northern Alps. Bergfex and wepowder had a big dump for Engelberg and Anton but snow forecast had much more modest amounts. Presumably using different models. Bergfex also scaled down from previous amounts but still a very healthy forecast with probably more manageable amounts.

I think the outlook is good regardless, should always take the softporn lenses of those sites with a pinch of salt I'd say.

Many of the models seem to have flipped in the wrong direction over the past few hours this weekend for the NW alpes. Warmer with a higher FL. Rain for low down Friday possibly snow on Saturday.
Still could improve before the weekend

@Boarderfarce, I've seen a few snowheads say something similar but I think it still looks pretty good given the time of year. Yes, rain to fairly high altitudes at first on Friday, but a lot of snow down to 1,500m and probably below for most of Friday night and all of Saturday. Followed by cool temperatures for several days to keep it all in good condition.

In fairness I think that was always on the cards, freezing level dropping Friday night into Saturday. Could be a bit to play for yet but I think it looks very positive.

And either way pistes next week should be superb given cold temperatures

Who'd have thunk it snowHead
Perfect set up for the lucky sods who had the foresight to book their annual trip for the Easter hols. Conditions were fab already in the North/West above 1800m thanks to last weekend's dump and will be stunning after this Eh oh!

We trust the the same journalists who were all over the cr*p conditions at Xmas will be on hand to report the state of play next week rolling eyes

Currently in Val Thorens. Weather has been quite cloudy all week and very mild. Our ski instructor says in his 40 years living here he has never had a season where the weather was so driven from the South West. At the moment the snow depths are OK although with no re-freeze overnight the snow is soft from the word go. Anything below 2,800m is like this - above is better. Les Menuires looking very green low down now and Meribel is very very slushy and difficult now.

It’s pretty much the same pattern as we are seeing in the UK. Winters driven or frequently interrupted by mild saturated southerlies. Less cold air from other directions too because the source is warmer than it used to be. Rain, wind and poor visibility more common and to a higher elevation.
Also some heavier snow events because the air in the mountains can now hold more moisture but all the time everything getting more marginal. Even the cold spells are no where near as cold as they would have been 40 years ago. All a bit depressing really.

Been raining heavily in Meribel Mottaret and Les Menuires all morning. Upper mountain links closed due to high winds. Hopefully snow at higher elevations Eh oh!

Val Thorens right on the rain / snow limit. Lower slopes horribly wet and sticky - above 2,600m is better. Very strong winds at altitude combined with thunder storms.

I'm looking out of my window at the moment at the Belledonne, it looks like mid May snow conditions and not great mid May conditions. les 7 Laux will close this weekend, no snow below 2000m except on piste on man made. Not worth the effort of keeping open, even if they could, due to lack of punters.

It's raining. The Belledonne are not tiny mountains, they top out at 2900 m but it is raining above 2000m at the moment. I've seen that at 2500 meters altitude conditions are now finally "average" for the season.

On a positive note, the conditions on Tuesday were awesome. Dry powder, blue skies. Nominal coverage resulted in a few core shots though haha. It can all change very quickly for good or worse.

Hoping for at least the powder to return tonight and make Sat/Sun/Mon good. Sun might be a stretch as forecast is cloud.

Sun is out now…

Despite sitting towards top of wepowder charts most of last few days engelberg was alas meh today. Steady rain and warm in resort at 1000m last night. Brittle grey underlayer on slopes in consequence up to highest open lift @2200m. Snowed most of morning then Viz lifted a bit. Maybe 15-20 cm accumulation off piste, moderately heavy at first. But it and pistes properly claggy by end of day.

Just too warm I think, despite forecast, very mild in valley again tonight.
