Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Always check your beacon these guys were indeed lucky. Always carry a couple of those little whiskey shooters in your pack too in case you have to spend the night in a snow cave.

Always check the avi report because if they had they would have probably stayed home.

@hang11, The avalanche risk was ok when they set out.
It was the amount of snow that fell overnight that caused the problem. This was their last planned night, and as soon as they realised how much snow there was, they chose to get off the mountain.
As @Mike Pow, says, they were unlucky to set off the avalanche. The fact that they were right on the edge helped. Luckily not completely buried.
Last day of a 3 day camp, so only had supplies for the last planned day, but properly equipped and knew what to do, and rescue happy to wait until next morning.

@brianatab, There's weather forecasts. I read the avi report for that area daily, which includes a decent forecast. I was planning to be touring on a 4 day trip up there last week and flagged it because of the high risk.

They were also "lucky" that the blizzard only lasted 1 day. Out of fuel, they would have been in a dire spot had the adverse weather last longer.

The most newsworthy information is that the snow in New Zealand is calorific:
Quote: |
The “big concern” was they might get dehydrated in the snow, and eating ice was not an option because the body would have taken more energy to melt the snow than it gained. |
