Poster: A snowHead

Hello all,
Easter falls slightly earlier this year, so rather than going for our usual self catered apartment in snow sure Val Thorens, we are looking for other options.
We’ve done the usual French suspects - Three Valleys, Espace Killy, Paradiski, so looking for something different.
Looking to drive, 3 adults, 2 kids (10 & 13) they still need lessons. Ideally self catering as trying to save a few pennies. We all love to cover distance on skis, adults are all happy on reds with a few blacks thrown in but no bumps or off piste.
Any ideas?

Switzerland isn't obviously the cheapest, but for a family self catering Nendaz works.
The apartments are spacious compared with France and competitively priced at Easter.
There are decent family discounts on lift passes.
A really good extensive area but difficult to avoid bumps coming back from Verbier other than downloading.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@T Bar, correct but if they can cope with a black piste there is only one ski route they need to avoid and this is easily done with the (almost empty) Col des Gentianes gondola.
I've never been there for Easter, will it still be possible to ski down to the resort, being at 1400 m altitude?

Have a look at the Les Sybelles ski area, 4th largest linked area in France with a good range of pistes and easily drivable.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've never understood why this is such a huge problem for some people. Machismo?

@pam w, I think it's pretty self-explanatory, not sure what's difficult to understand. Many people find bumps difficult to ski and are very much afraid of them. Yes, there are ways to ski them better that can be easily acquired by most people but in practice a huge proportion of recreational skiers never do so and remain mortally afraid of bumps.

@Chaletbeauroc, I think Pam is questioning why downloading is a problem, not why bumps are a problem.
I dislike the concept of downloading because it's a waste of time - the time spent going up in a lift, as well as the time spent going down. It's a 20-30min round trip (worse if there is a queue) with no skiing involved.

Absolutely. I don't think it's often a "waste of time". End of the day in Val d'Isere, downloading can be quicker than hip-hopping down "Le Face" trying to avoid all the people who should have downloaded and are struggling, and also trying to avoid becoming an obstacle oneself, with tired legs after a long day's skiing. And many "valley runs" often have poor snow towards the end of the day, and might not be very interesting even when the snow is good, and when they're not cluttered up with all the people who see downloading as a defeat.

Especially at Easter in resorts, I have often decided to do extra run up high on nice snow then download in lift rather than do the home run which is a run which is gettig very patchy at the end of the season

@pam w, @NickyJ, I agree it can be the best solution, and I've done it plenty of times (particularly late season as you say) - I'd just rather not plan a holiday/resort knowing it would be necessary. But the OP may not mind sightseeing from skilifts for a few hrs on their holiday!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

If you don’t like big, long, steep bump runs, downloading is the only way from Verbier back to Nendaz. Although the Chassoure gondola is a pretty quick journey down. The black down from Plan de Fou is not for the lighthearted either. La Tzoumaz isn’t a bad option for less demanding skiers. Check ski school and hire prices. Assume 3V is not cheap but CH may be even more.

Yep, there's snow making down to resort level. I've been there lots at Easter, though it will be pretty wet snow by the afternoon at that level it's fine for getting home.
