I doubt many on here will ever go to Madagascar, but if you do, it's absolutely necessary to carry your passport at all times!
It's a tremendous scam by the various Police forces to enforce this as they know that a large % of tourists will opt to leave their passports in the hotel safe.
It can also get a bit tense if you try to debate the above with them unless you throw some names and make a phone-call
We've probably been stopped at least 5x over two visits totalling 8 or so weeks.
Apart from that, it's a safe and wonderful place to visit, though incredibly poor, but always a smiling people.
OH back then as Editor of Air Mada Magazine sent a question to the Minister of Tourism asking why, and got a very wishy-washy response back.

To think, the first draft of the final solution was to move all the European Jews to Madagascar

Never heard that before?
And one of the more notorious Madagascan Presidents sought to move all disabled children to an offshore island, no wonder his Grandaughter never uses her/his surname in a work environment but she is cannily adept and getting things done!

here are the basic proposals from the Germans'
the original plan was with the Polish and French governments but after the fall of those to countries two the Germans they decided to go it alone. The Polish had already abandoned the plan as they said Madagascar could only support 5000 jewish families - given the current pop is 27 Million that seems a bit low.

The approaching victory gives Germany the possibility, and in my view also the duty, of solving the Jewish question in Europe. The desirable solution is: all Jews out of Europe.
The task of the Foreign Ministry in this is:
a) To include this demand in the Peace Treaty and to insist on it also by means of separate negotiations with the European countries not involved in the Peace Treaty;
b) to secure the territory necessary for the settlement of the Jews in the Peace Treaty, and to determine principles for the cooperation of the enemy countries in this problem;
c) to determine the position under international law of the new Jewish overseas settlement;
d) as preparatory measures:
1) clarification of the wishes and plans of the departments concerned of the Party, State and Research organizations in Germany, and the coordination of these plans with the wishes of the Reich Foreign Minister, including the following:
2) preparation of a survey of the factual data available in various places (number of Jews in the various countries), use of their financial assets through an international bank;
3) negotiations with our friend, Italy, on these matters.
With regard to beginning the preparatory work, Section D III has already approached the Reich Foreign Minister via the Department Germany [interior affairs], and has been instructed by him to start on the preparatory work without delay. There have already been discussions with the Office of the Reichsfuehrer SS in the Ministry of Interior and several departments of the Party. These departments approve the following plan of Section D III:
Section D III proposes as a solution of the Jewish question: In the Peace Treaty France must make the island of Madagascar available for the solution of the Jewish question, and to resettle and compensate the approximately 25,000 French citizens living there. The island will be transferred to Germany under a mandate. Diégo Suarez Bay and the port of Antsirane, which are [sea-] strategically important, will become German naval bases (if the Navy wishes, these naval bases could be extended also to the harbors – open road-steads – Tamatave, Andevorante, Mananjara, etc.). In addition to these naval bases, suitable areas of the country will be excluded from the Jewish territory (Judenterritorium) for the construction of air bases. That part of the island not required for military purposes will be placed under the administration of a German Police Governor, who will be under the administration of the Reichsfuehrer SS. Apart from this, the Jews will have their own administration in this territory: their own mayors, police, postal and railroad administration, etc. The Jews will be jointly liable for the value of the island. For this purpose their former European financial assets will be transferred for use to a European bank to be established for this purpose. Insofar as the assets are not sufficient to pay for the land which they will receive, and for the purchase of necessary commodities in Europe for the development of the island, the Jews will be able to receive bank credits from the same bank.
As Madagascar will only be a Mandate, the Jews living there will not acquire German citizenship. On the other hand, the Jews deported to Madagascar will lose their citizenship of European countries from the date of deportation. Instead, they will become residents of the Mandate of Madagascar.
This arrangement would prevent the possible establishment in Palestine by the Jews of a Vatican State of their own, and the opportunity for them to exploit for their own purposes the symbolic importance which Jerusalem has for the Christian and Mohammedan parts of the world. Moreover, the Jews will remain in German hands as a pledge for the future good behavior of the members of their race in America.
Use can be made for propaganda purposes of the generosity shown by Germany in permitting cultural, economic, administrative and legal self-administration to the Jews; it can be emphasized at the same time that our German sense of responsibility towards the world forbids us to make the gift of a sovereign state to a race which has had no independent state for thousands of years: this would still require the test of history.

Madagascar demographics (a bit of a time bomb), you don't want to see the High growth scenario (e.g. current 2.5% population growth projected forward)

@Nadenoodlee, it gets better !!
So Madagascar was French, and concerns by Churchill was that either the Japanese or as per the above the Germans would command the Indian Ocean and routes to from South Africa Cape Town if they established a Naval base in Diego Suarez a massive natural harbour in the North of the big Isle.
Though by the time of the operation after the fall of Singapore it was the perceived threat of the Japanese.
So take a read of this, the battle for Madagascar, and some of the personal accounts are just the stuff of Boy's Own, and you just have to respect what they did, let alone jumping off a ship onto the harbour at speed!
https://www.combinedops.com/MADAGASCAR.htm
We've visited the Commonwealth Cemetery in Diego to pay our respects as I doubt too many Brits visit there now, and in the very rundown environment that is a Madagascan town it really is a beam of light !
What is amazing is that once the French left Mada in the 60's all infrastructure just fell apart and the main road from the capital to Diego is a potholed single track in many places, with bridges washed away, think Manchester London and that's the equivalent of the two "cities" but travel between them is ridiculously difficult, even the Chinese are unwilling to invest there!!

That is quite some thread drift..! On the original topic (more or less), and as a general ‘head’s up’, I flew back into Lyon from Amsterdam last night and the French appear to have recently re-instated intra-Schengen border checks - had a not-so-fun (at 23:30) 35 minute queue as LYS had only 2 border officials on with multiple flight arrivals…
Not sure (would be surprised) if this applies to land crossings also currently but had crossed to Geneva several times in last few weeks with no noticeable change there.

@albob, I think it's more a case of being caught in the cross-fire between SEF (who used to exclusively manage all aspects of Border Control), and their long running dispute with the Government.
https://www.portugal.com/news/portuguese-foreigners-and-borders-service-sef-set-to-be-extinct-in-may/
The "policing" aspect of immigration and border control has been largely been removed from SEF, leaving them to handle the administration and bureaucracy.
We've have looked at a relocation move via the D7 Visa route, but the recent arrival of Mrs G7's Irish passport has negated the need for it.
In-Laws live in Portugal and were settled pre-Brexit. Portuguese bureaucracy is frankly bonkers in many aspects. So much so that my father in law has decided that their lives will be so much easier if they give up residency and he obtains his Irish/EU passport. (He already has Irish citizenship).
Healthcare can be hit and miss. A bit of a regional lottery, but it's largely down to staffing shortages. Many trained doctors leave Pt. to go elsewhere to work. And this is largely down to the relatively low salaries paid in Portugal. But, private healthcare is cheap. Often just a few euros for a blood test,or even a scan.
