Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I've said it before and so have others, but if driving consider the "country road" between Chambéry and Ambérieu-en-Bugey. I'm sure that it is slightly longer time-wise than the autoroute, but if the autoroute goes pear-shaped you'll be laughing.
It's a pleasant country road used as a "Holiday Route" alternative. The scenery is good (especially looking down at Chambéry Airport and the lake)!
I've done this road several times in a Defender and would do it again. For satnav purposes use Yenne and Belley as way-points (depending on the satnav you might want to delete each way-point when a mile or two out to avoid going into each centre).

I've also advocated Amberieu/Chambery route before. Use this every time, and have done for around 15 years, usually (pre-Covid) 3 to 4 times a year. Had to turn back once, in heavy snow, and return to motorway, but otherwise no problem. I now tend to stop overnight at the Ibis Budget immediately after coming off the motorway at Amberieu which is very basic but suits me fine, leaving around 3 hour drive on Saturday morning to Les Arcs.

I'm head down through France Sunday & I am expecting it to be busier than normal with all those flight disruptions & rail strikes. I keep meaning to get a doofer & I keep forgetting!
Does anyone know if you can but them at the autoroute service stations?

@Jonny996, Once you get across the channel you will find the roads quiet and running as usual. And being a Sunday a lot fewer heavy lorries overtaking one another on two lane autoroutes.

We came down on Monday and there were no problems.

We have just returned from a long weekend in Alpe d'Huez.

We left on Friday morning 0620 tunnel crossing (arriving shortly before 8am local) and headed south via Reims Dijon and Lyon, arriving ADH at around 6pm. We stopped a couple times for a stretch of the legs, a bite to eat and some fuel. The return leg we left at 9am and made Calais in good time for our 1850 crossing.

Total tolls out and back came to £142, which was a sum well spent when you consider the quality of the road surfaces and the efficiency of transit. I'm convinced I am more tired driving a fraction of the distances in the UK because of the state of our roads. We didn't have a vignette and I am not convinced that having one would have improved the overall experience that much. There were little or no queues at the peage we passed through, but this could easily be different on other routes/at different times of the day.

@Jonny996, This weekend is the first "Black Weekend " of the summer for the French motorways with school holidays starting. Conditions on Saturday are forecast to be between very difficult and extremely difficult. Sunday is forecast to be difficult for the south east of France and normal for the rest.

The 6th will be extremely boring, sat still in your car looking at the back of the one in front. Toofy Grin

I have travelled on that Saturday once, never again, it took over16 hours to get from the Nice to Paris. it's not uncommon in pre-covid days for them to record over a 1,000 kilometres of motorway queues on that Saturday.

That weekend is known as the "Chassé-croisé des juillettistes et des aoûtiens" and is awful. If you Google "chassé croisé bouchons" then you will get a good idea of the problems on that weekend
