So individual countries entry/exit systems aren't currently linked so at the moment they do manual checks. Then they're going to introduce a system (that they've been working on for c10 years and has been in test for c2 years) that still won't link their systems and stop doing manual checks? Why would anyone do that? Unless you think that the EU/SHchengen aren't bothered about their border security?

The Commission says one of the points of EES is to allow third country nationals to use e gates
https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/smart-borders/entry-exit-system_en
though it is not clear from the studies that have been done whether e gates will be approved rather than more cumbersome systems like fingerprints. Also not clear how this will work with vehicle crossings whether by road, ferry or tunnel without passengers having to leave their vehicles. I believe the use of e gates in Portugal and elsewhere has been part of the study not just some random "be nice to brits" thing.

@munich_irish, I'd imagine that if the gate is capable of using facial recognition then that's what they'll use. Fingerprints will be a back up where there's uncertainty or where the technology isn't available.

You'll need to Register first of course.

@andy from embsay, that's not what the report says if you read it. I agree that e gates make most sense but fingerprints seem a popular option with the report author's too. Maybe there wont be a uniform technology, how would e gates work getting on a ferry in a car?

Some e-gates use fingerprints I think? I've certainly had to put my fingers on a reader at some point in an airport - Spain, maybe? I'd assume it'll be a bit like security scanning - on a risk/random sample basis.
And ferries are always going to be an issue if they want to check every individual's biometrics, I guess?

@andy from embsay, it is a bit absurd however. Why not just ditch the fee and the questionnaire, I mean which shoe bomber ever answered "yes" to " are you a terrorist"? |
The US one, which had the question
"Do you, by a process of armed insurrection, intend to overthrow the democratic process of the United States of America?"
did actually catch my mate out a few years back.

The US system is 2-fold. Firstly everyone needs to buy an ESTA, which is a big earner. Then, once you have experienced the immigration queues a few times you can buy a Global Entry visa that allows you to use the electronic gates for $100. I expect the EU will follow a similar model, just very slowly and clunkily.
