Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What are some great sporting events around Europe people have taken part in and would recommend? Maybe slightly less well known than the famous events like the London marathon, étape du Tour, Patrouille des glaciers etc. Looking for some ideas…

Not as competitor.

Great North run, Newcastle
Man vs Horse, Wales
Le jog, Lands end Jon O Groats, or the reverse both as cycling, not event as much as challenge.
Coast to coast "C2C" run or cycle, more challenge I think but maybe event.

Obviously all UK, but must be some quirky-ish events Europe wide.

Also Bog snorkeling, may be related to man vs horse.

Ones I've done (and were mostly type 1 fun).

Heb challenge. This is now a bit different from when I did it in 2008, when it was 5 and a half days and the full length of the Outer Hebrides
Three Peaks cyclocross. It should be back again for 2022. Not sure if it'll be over-subscribed. If so, I think places will be allocated based on experience
Skimo Scotland. Not sure I'd travel for Switzerland for it. I consider it worth it from York if there are 2 races on a weekend, and a reasonable chance most of the course will have snow

@BobinCH, my son does half triathlons and normally does a few competitions a year in Scotland, would expect there to be quite a few throughout the UK .

60/90 km cross country ski, 315 km bike ride around Vättern, 3 km open water swim and 30 km run. To be done in one year, theoretically.

@BobinCH, I haven't - lots of my mates have and rave about it. It used to go right round the island following the coast but they now go along the Tramantura then back along the plain and do a loop down the east coast. The last feed stop apparently involves paella and beer...

@BobinCH, if anything I'd say the bit south of Soller is more scenic - climbs aren't so gnarly but Deia, Valdemossa etc are stunning bits of coastline.

A few cycling events I’ve enjoyed -

The Amstel Gold - an early season sportive, various options up to the full 250km and basically the same route as the pro race except the start and finish are in Valkenburg rather than Maastricht. Great weekend, ride it on Saturday then drink beer and watch the pros on the Sunday.

The Styrkeproven - a 540km ride from Trondheim down to Oslo. 5,000 riders, mid-summer so doesn’t get fully dark.

Paris-Brest-Paris - the 1200km granddaddy of all audaxes. Brilliant atmosphere and support on the road, complete contrast with most audaxes!

Man v Horse - best atmosphere by far of any event I’ve taken part in. I could list a whole load more epic events, but they all require you to ride a horse either for a stupidly long distance or at great speed. Biggest sense of achievement was completing the Raid Centaure, a 100km orienteering race, at night in a forest in a blizzard. The French stewards gave us brandy to keep us going! Eh oh! I love a good novelty sports event. When I’m too old to orienteer on horse, I’m told there are events you can do in a classic car.

I'd vaguely looked at the idea of the winter triathlon, and there are a few variations:

The original, and the one with world champs and recognised by World Triathlon, seems to be as per hammerite's post ( https://www.andorrawintertriathlon.com/ ), which is run, MTB, cross-country ski

I think there's another permutation where ice skating replaces the MTB

And then there's kitenski's post for road bike, run, skimo (vertical), which I think is more of a one off

A mate did the Marathon des Sables, basically 6 marathons in six days, across the Morroccan desert. Sheer lunacy if you ask me. Oh, i think hou have to carry your food or something silly like that.
If that wasn't enough, there is a swimming race across the bosphorus i think!

On a more sane note, i'd thought of the mtb race megavalanche, which is Alpe D'Huez, top to bottom.
