Great stuff BobinCH! What does the shorter version entail
Is that you on the photo? Or was this you leading (complete with all the lycra gear and PDG rucksack) and racing past us tortoises-on-skins on a training run in Austria in March?

Doesn’t look great for the poor souls coming from Zermatt!

Nice gig - to get your 3 week military service refresher supporting the PdG
Wednesday departures delayed by a day due to the fresh snow = avalanche risk
Anyone interested can follow teams or watch the live coverage on the PdG app

Lots of nervous excitement despite the early start!
2:30 wake up call, lift down the road to Les Hauderes to pick up the 3:00 bus coming up from Sion
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Back to the race! After the first steepish ramp out of Arolla the track flattens on the approach to the first checkpoint at the Combe du Pas de Chèvres

Hit the first checkpoint after 750m of climbing in 1h07. We probably went off a bit fast but felt pretty good. At this point the track separates for the Arolla vs Zermatt patrols to reduce crowding at the Col

Sun was now out and tactics get a bit more important. Always follow patrols with the same or higher race numbers to avoid getting stuck behind slower groups on the limited skin tracks

Fortunately there was decent snow cover at the top so enough space for a quick transition and down the other side. Tricky skiing conditions with 20cm of tracked powder / crust on an icy base with plenty of rocks poking out
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

It was survival skiing on the matchsticks and there were plenty of people wiping out on the way down. Fortunately we avoided the worst of it and got down unscathed. Looking forward to the last descent to the Lac des Dix

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

20 mins of flat skinning round the lake and we reached La Barma, more or less the half way point and the official feeding station. The sun was now out so ditched warm layers and mitts and on with the suntan cream
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Starting to feel it a bit on the long approach to Rosablanche
As it got steeper the skin track had a few nasty icy sections, one of which left me in a heap! My buddies were in a strong rhythm so sent them ahead and took a couple of minutes to refuel and sort myself out for the top. Left hand bootpack looked the pick
