Lech (February 28th)

On Monday afternoon a collision between two skiers.

One of the two women was seriously injured. The second person involved in the accident fled.

A 60-year-old on Monday afternoon around 11.50 a.m. blue piste 210, near the mountain station Hasensprung, towards the valley station. In the flat section there, the woman came to a stop on the right edge of the slope when she was suddenly caught by a second skier riding in "Schussposition". As a result, both fell and the 60-year-old repeatedly overturned so violently that she even lost both skis.

Call for witnesses:

The other skier who caused the accident simply got up again, continued her descent and simply left the injured 60-year-old lying at the scene of the accident.

The 60yr old had suffered a concussion, a broken rib and a torn ligament as a result of the accident.

Any witnesses of the accident, but especially the Skier, are requested to report to the PI Lech (+43 (0) 59 133 8105).

Accident today, same area, helicopter attended. Looked like a collision.
I was also skiing above Oberlech today and got blasted by wanabees Goggia in particular, and Odermatts. Fortunately, I keep an eye out.
If your skill levels are that good to schuss at speed you don't endanger other skiers on blue runs just to prove it. Quite the reverse in fact.
Happens on other blue, and crowded, pistes.
If these clowns are that good let's see them schuss the colours above the Ulmerhutte.
We could then enjoy their spectacular failures!

Quite okay in stanton today. Bit slushy and heavy at lower altitudes. But had a decent day.

However I see the forecast is now for rain Wednesday to Monday. Any idea on the FL? Or alternative forecasts?

@Legendarry, There seems to be general agreement amongst the various forecasts and models that there will be precipitation from the middle of next week. Quite where the boundary between snow & rain will be is very difficult to say. No sign of serious cold though.

Arriving to Lech exactly in a week, this time with my family.
For the last years they heard me saying again and again what an amazing ski area it is and how they should come with me and enjoy evth it offers.
Well they finally listened and I didn't tell them yet they should bring umbrellas. Skullie
If the actual forecast stays unchanged from March 13 forward, I need a high enough area so that it will snow instead of rain but with good enough visibility and blue pistes so that the intermediates won't panic.
Any difference between Kriegerhorn and Saloberkopf, in that aspect?
And how challenging will the evening drive from Zurich Airport be if it (hopefully) snows instead of rain?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Saloberkopf has a number of blue runs coming off it.

Kreigerhorn not so much; you finish up on heavily trafficked connecting pistes. I only really use it to get high enough to connect to something like Balmalp, Steinmähder, Auenfeldjet, etc.

Zürs might be a good choice if you want/need to stay high. Your challenge will be altitude versus visibility if the weather turns foul.

I have only taken the train from Zürich, so cannot comment on the driving conditions. Perhaps @munich_irish, will along shortly and be able to offer some insights.

@kitenski, many thanks for the cheer up, it's needed in this case.
So theoretically two wet days before a beautiful winter returns, IF Snow-Forecast is correct.
The village will look lovely from above so it will be worth waiting.
Let's hope the FL drops faster. We might decide to drive to St. Anton for half a day for the swimming pool next to the skate ring

@drporat, Kriegerhorn has two lovely blues, one towards Steinmähder, the other one leading into Oberlech, connecting to many other blues. And when weather is bad, it will not be busy...
Salober has a few blues, but also some blacks... (oh and Kriegerhorn has 5 great marked skiroutes too, but that's another story)
But honestly both Salober and Kriegerhorn are rather exposed, and no big fun when weather is bad.
I think you really need to stop looking at the forecasts (this is what my partner always says to me in the weeks before our holiday. And he is right)
It is way too far out, and it will definitely not be as bad as they can tell you now in a few pictograms. Do realize that every pictogram of a rainy cloud stands for 24 hours. But it will not rain 24 hours, in fact, that rain might fall during the night, and of course that rain then would be snow, and the sun comes out during the day. Which would be typically March-weather....
Thumbs up!

@drporat, if I read the weather runes correctly there is a föhn storm due this week but it will have gone by the time you arrive though the forecast is for precipitation most days until after next weekend (maybe rain at valley level). If you are around for the following week that should give some good conditions.

I would not worry about the drive. The road up from Stuben to the Flexenpass (the pass itself is mostly in a tunnel) does occasionally get closed but very unlikely in March. It is probably worth getting snow chains as sometimes they are required above Stuben and you dont want to get stuck arguing with an Austrian police office late on a Saturday evening with a tired toddler in the car! Until you get to Stuben there are no issues with the road (yes there have been snowmaggedon episodes in the past but that seems extremely unlikely next Saturday).

A quick roundup of the snow/weather forecast sites does not paint a pretty picture for Wednesday-Saturday. A very unsettled and dynamic situation, but some rain seems inevitable given the general agreement on temps. The question of how much will probably not be answered until later in the week.

One indicator of ABB’s thinking may be that the snow guns have been running for several nights; suggests they are not expecting a net gain from this system.

As an aside, a look at the much-vaunted meteoblue forecast yesterday had me in laughter… they were forecasting close to a metre of snow Wed-Fri. Either they had loaded a test file or were stoned. They have seemingly returned to their senses this morning.

In other news,

Hi all,

Due to head to St Anton for our annual family sky trip on Saturday (11th) for a week. Current forecasts seem pretty bleak - rain before arrival, then rain wind and cloud for the duration of our stay, obviously not ideal. As someone not too familiar with the weather models, is there anything in the models to be optimistic about?

Mainly interested in on-piste skiing, so not sure what impact the heavy rain forecast this week will have on that as it is not something weve experienced before. Thanks!

@ldnski23, I would not spend too much time contemplating the various weather models. There seems to be general agreement that there will be precipitation towards the end of this week, even if that is rain at village level (hardly an unusual occurrence in St Anton in March in recent years) it will almost certainly be snow higher up. From what I have seen the suggestion is generally pleasant spring weather for the following week. If so seems pretty perfect for a holiday a top up of snow followed by sunny drinking weather.

@ldnski23, you are arriving in a week. Forecasts that far out are usually a crap-shoot, especially this season, when the weather systems have been so dynamic and far from “normal”. Try not to sweat it until you arrive, though I understand your feelings. One consolation- there is plenty of snow on the man-made pistes and the upper mountain, so it would take a tropical storm to inflict severe & terminal damage.

just to paste this here to show how chaotic the GFS is, if the various lines are similiar it means agreement, you can see the chaos from the lines, which means any automated apps/websites are just going to reflect the 6 hour view of one of these lines.

Weather
Trust nobody but the local guy !!

This week we are dealing with very varied western weather. However, the wind can also turn to the southwest again and again, so that increasingly spring-like mild temperature conditions will set in. Tomorrow Tuesday we will have to deal with a friendly mix of sun and clouds again with a foehn southwesterly wind. Even on Wednesday, the foehn can still get involved. At the same time, however, the wind is also stronger and can still cause sunny weather phases. There will be some precipitation especially during the second half of the week, with the snow line oscillating between 1400m and 1900m. Most precipitation is expected in the western side of the mountains. However, foehn effects are still mixed into the weather, so that apart from these congested areas no significant amounts of precipitation are to be expected. This is the latest trend. However, as a result of the dynamic weather development this week, the pendulum could well swing more in the rainier direction.

@BobinCH, Maybe that's the forecast for the western alps but currently no suggestion of that for the Arlberg. The text @stanton, has copied from the tourist office website seems a reasonable summary and is suggesting less precipitation than some places (like the 1m of snow referenced above). As with all weather forecasts it is only an educated guess, perhaps we will need to carry a snow shovel simply to get to the pub on Saturday Smile
