@horgand, Who knows - it's just weather. Plenty there for sliding around on piste and its getting colder so what's there will stay, no major off-piste likely even if it does materialise, sadly this season's a poor one.

GFS shows something happening then a huge drop in temps, before a return to avg temps - how much is always impossible for any automated system to predict IMHO

@Markymark29, @munich_irish,

They were indeed a bit more optimistic earlier this week, but still expecting:
30-50 cm for Warth, and 20-30 cm for Lech, and for St.Anton
Looks like a very short but intense Nordstau situation, so we have to be lucky it will materialize
Official Weather from local meteo guy (rarely wrong)
With a cold front tonight into Saturday, a late winter cold weather period is temporarily initiated.
We are dealing with a more cloudy weather pattern at the weekend.
Compact, high fog-like clouds give the little chance o sun .
This is most likely to come on the higher mountains .
At times, however, light, unproductive snow flurries can also be added.
Significant amounts of fresh snow are not expected. (10-15cms of bootdust)
At the beginning of the new week, a powerful high-pressure area expands from Germany to the Alps.
In this context, the weather stream turns to the southeast, so that there will already be a significant frost weakening again.
At the same time, the air also dries strongly, which will establish unclouded good weather with only moderately cold late winter temperatures well into the next week.
Weather is a passionate religious pursuit at this time of year for me in the mountains..... rather like a lifetime agnostic of variable religious faith, who becomes far more devout as their end is getting nearer.... as my weeks in the Alps approach, I'll pray to those snow gods for every flurry, snow shower and cm of fresh that the deity may bestow on us hunched, humble, gear clad mountain goers!!
Of course, there may not be a (snow) God, but I'd rather not take the chance!!

I'll also be travelling down next Friday, arriving St Anton Saturday morning, hoping for some snow this week. I'm avoiding looking at the weather forecasts though to avoid disappointment. If you see an old silver Audi S4 around town with UK plates it will probably be me and my son. Seems like there are a few SHs there at the same time.

Yeah that's quite likely. On the Saturday we'll probably be in the Murmel to see Gunar but Sundays one of his days off and we usually go to the Moose to see if everythings still the same as previous years. If you are in there on Sunday just post something on this thread and we'll look out for you. Often we are in the upstairs bar with the big windows, the 'stooberl' as it's known. One of the permanent bar staff there is really good and we often end up having a few jagermeister shots with him.

I rarely venture onto this thread but just had a mooch out of interest. Has anyone ever got the bottom of stanton's burning hatred of anyone who might want to look forward to their holiday or feel positive about anything vaguely Arlberg related?
A trace of new snow on our deck and still snowing lightly.

Be carefull out there.. the Hospitals in Innsbruck/Feldkirch/Zams are very busy right now with numerous Ski Accidents (on piste) in the Tirol/Vorarlberg
Stuben (23 February) .. 5yr old woman seriouly injured in a collision
Major operation in Vorarlberg: Two men aged 52 and 53 died Friday evening in Lech am Arlberg, probably as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. They were in an annex of the Hotel and possibly staff...
Six people in total were taken to Hospital.
The incident led to a massive contingent of emergency personnel: In addition to 200 firefighters, 47 rescue workers, five emergency doctors, four police patrols and the crisis intervention team were involved.
Between a high north of the Alps and a low south of it, we will find ourselves in a very lively northeasterly current on Sunday.
The supply of polar cold air reaches its peak, especially on the mountains.
There you have to be prepared for high winter cold. At the same time, more compact, high fog-like clouds reach us, which can sometimes be good for a few snowflakes.
On the higher mountains towards the main Alpine ridge there are the best chances for some sunshine in between. At the beginning of the new week, little will change in this weather character.
The late winter cold still has us firmly under control. On Tuesday, the influence of high pressure from the north will largely prevail, sunshine will take command of the weather for the rest of the week.
With the temperatures it goes up until the middle of the week probably only temporarily.

@stanton, Warth had 42 cm, Lech had 20 cm. Ulmerhütte 11 cm.
Typically Nordstau, the Arlberg-Effect....Meteoblue was quite accurate
I would quit the Oberland weather....

The currently posted Galzig snow depth is 161cm, which implies 21cm has accumulated since yesterday.
The unskied/lightly-skied snow was an absolute joy to ski. Being quite wet snow, it did however clump up quickly, leading to epic moguls on runs like Kandahar. Coupled with thick fog, ie full IMC , it made for a character-building experience this afternoon!

The Austrian avalanche service reports that there is 18cm of increased snow depth at the Ulmerhütte in the past 24 hours (17cm in past 48 hours). The equivalent figures for Warth are 21cm and 17cm . See https://avalanche.report/weather/measurements?year=&month=&searchLang=®ion=all&problem=all&page=1&searchText=. The Warth reading is from 1490m the Ulmerhütte is at 2205m so not a completely fair comparison. If you click on the location it displays a graph of the recent readings.

Bloody hell, it is -14C on Rendl & Galzig, and -19C on the Valluga! A trace of new snow on our deck. A crazy season!
Edit: snow-making has restarted on the lower slopes. It was running all yesterday and last night. I noticed the guns had been reinstalled on the lower section of Valfagehr.
@stanton, your Oberland man said 10 cm, wasn't? And you your usual boot dust?
Well, I'm quite satisfied with 40 cm of boot dust, as forecasted!
Guten Appetit at Salome!

Sweden week. Just as many people as last week. Many ski school caterpillars.
A very cold morning again: -12c on the Galzig. The snow guns below mid-mountain must have been set to a fairly wet mix. The surface felt like frozen wet sand to ski.

@ulmerhutte, well this troll can tell you that this week is another Dutch week (the north one, including Amsterdam, The Hague and extremely densely populated regio...), and since there are much more Dutch than Swedes in the world....But then, we know your languages are not that good....you need to improve yóur trolling.

Arlberg we occiasionally get North American Style Dumps but you have to be really incredibly lucky to get the 0.75-1 metre dumps if your only heading out for your 1 week or 2 weeks a season...
Us folks out here all season probably only see them 2 times (max) and this season the early December dump was not enough to for safe off piste..
I refer to most fresh snow in Arlberg (less that 25cms) as Bootdust....
If you can just glide down the North Face of Rendl ,Töbel or even Bachseite with no effort needed in the turns.... you have found one of those Arlberg Deep Powder Days
I your not wearing a Snorkel for those Epic Days it is Not Powder
Season is not over... another 8 weeks -- the Cows are calling for a sustained snow(precipitation) peiod 2nd week of March....
What is clear the current Winter Cold spell will break(finish) from this Wednesday and daily temperatures will start to rise..
The preliminary climate balance of GeoSphere Austria comes to a sobering conclusion: in the mountains, this winter lands in 12th place when it comes to the warmest winters ever measured.
TYROL. According to Alexander Orlik, climatologist at GeoSphere Austria, the climate balance in Austria's mountains is 1.2 degrees above the average for the climate period 1991 to 2020. This results in 12th place for the mountain region of Austria in the series of the warmest winters in the 256-year history of measurement.
""On 18 February 2023, there was a new February record for Tyrol in Innsbruck with 21.7 degrees.""
Picture perfect day today. Bluebird. Just a hint of a breeze. Maybe -5C around mid-mountain during the day. Ego snow, grippy and a delight to ski.
For about 2 hours at lunchtime, both Kapall and Kandahar were all but deserted. You could ski straight on Kapallbahn, the Schöngraben T-bar, Zammermoos, and Osthangbahn.
Days do not get much better than this!

Yep. Stayed local whilst everyone else I assume went over Zurs/Lech. Lunch in Stuben. Loved it.
You know it makes sense.

@stanton, I'm fine with your namedropping (I know those names, been there). And whilst I'm not a local or a seasonaire, I've been coming to the Arlberg for 30 years, and seen many very big dumps through the years, and been locked in or out of Lech and even St.Anton several times.
But as long as you keep on trusting Tiroler Oberland weather, you clearly show to know very little about Arlberg weather. You and your Oberland man predicted 10 cm. Perfectly accurate for the Tiroler Oberland probably. But large parts of Arlberg got 40 cm. As was predicted by e.g. Meteoblue. Because Arlberg gets the snow the Oberland doesn't get, as usual.

@kitenski,
Latest GFS ensemble is relatively optimistic for next week though perhaps on the mild side
ECM is similar so at least some more snow next week seems to be likely though not convinced there is going to be a lot (for example the Wepowder algorithm suggests little to none)
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
@munich_irish, thanks, where do you get the probability chart?
You can choose the variable to display on the ensemble, arguably the "snow depth" one is more useful than the "snow risk" as that gives more of an indication of a couple of snow flakes v a blizzard, the risk one is prettier though
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
@munich_irish, What does all the above mean regards snow in the next 10 days? ie what are the colours on the %probability chart?
@Markymark29, red is higher probability than blue, there is a scale on the X axis from 0-100, so it's saying very high prob of snow Fri 3rd, and 50%-75% prob next week.

do be aware that it could mean a 100% possibility of two snowflakes being spotted at Galzig, doesnt mean a lot of snow!

@munich_irish, indeed! you could also read it as 25% chance of no snow on Friday and 50% chance of no snow next week! Surely winter has to rock up at some point in March!!

No need for complicate meteo-graphs, and 'ensembles-blablabla'. (talking about "dick-measuring"...) Better to leave the interpretation of that to the professionals.
