Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@munich_irish, plenty of excellent bowls of pasta in Lech at very reasonable prices, and wíth table service! I'm always a bit surprised to hear people repeating the same Lech-clichés time and again...
And that Zürs (and Warth!) are best spots to go skiing when the weather is hot is no big news either. But Oberlech stays best for terraces! wink

@Langerzug, there's a table service restaurant at Gampen, it was very nice when we visited a couple of years ago. I gather the Rodelalm has seen changes but I have no idea what it's like now, I hope to investigate in a couple of weeks. Given the snow situation and sunny forecast I suspect we'll have time to visit a lot of restaurants Sad

@sah, The Rodelalm is now owned by Anthonys which is a steak and burger spot in the village which looks like an upmarket Maccy Ds to me but maybe I am wrong. Pity the Skiing Budha folks havent got a hut to serve lunchtime curry.

yep, Arlbergfan works for Lech Tourism.
Since Flexenbahn, we still have to do the Run of Fame (or rather Lech-Rendl-Lech)
It's these images, and the lack of nice restaurants that is putting us off....Any suggestions for nicer restaurants (not too busy, real chairs instead of benches, no loud music etc.) on the St.Anton side?
Looking to come end of March, hopefully that helps (and the snow lasts...)

At Stuben there is the Hotel Post and the Berghaus, both have comfortable seating (chairs) and tablecloths. Only had lunch at them though, e.g. pasta or goulash suppe, it was fine. Also at Stuben is compact s'Murmele, quaint with dark wood furnishings, hard seating, but good food: again just had pasta, goulash suppe or grostl. All have quiet atmosphere.
On Rendl there is only the Bifang Alm (low down on R1), apart from the main restaurant at the gondola summit. The Bifang Alm is dark wood interior with long tables and benches. It has an excellent wine list, again only lunched there but the service is good; it's popular at lunchtime and is not big inside: has back ground music.
For lunch we also head for Rodelalm, off 33 above Nasserein. We like the food. Interior has pleasant wood seating, with large tables. Features a central open log fire.
Some have recommended the food at the Griabli, by the Mooserwirt. Not eaten at the Griabli for some years.
Gampen Restaurant is big and gets very busy, and noisey. Since the refurb it has a softer interior but still has very large tables and hard seating. On bad weather days it gets crammed, young families, etc.
But as sah says there is a separate restaurant but I've no experience of it.

Just back from a fabulous night out. We were surprised with a dinner to celebrate 20 years of coming to St Anton.

If you are looking for a special night out, and you are not a vegan Toofy Grin; then go to https://www.andinohotel.at/en/alfuego/ you will not be disappointed. It is an Argentinian restaurant. The rib eye was fabulous, as were the pork ribs. There is a lovely sitting area in front of an open fire to enjoy pre & post dinner drinks, especially their special rum.

Reservations can be hard to get because they give the hotel guests first opportunity to book, but well worth the effort.

This winter has been especially dry too, but this is now the third winter in a row with sustained May-like temperatures in Feb... Personally I really enjoy skiing when it's like this, but it's worrying that this seems to be becoming a trend!

The Mooserwirt actually does pretty decent... EDIT: just checked the menu and they're charging €26 for a salad; they've gone mad!! Laughing Laughing No-one should be paying and enabling that sort of blatant rip-off, even in the Arlberg, the greedy Fitzwilliams Laughing

ON the hill in Lech (Oberlech)

Hotel Salome has a good self service resturant good quality... cheaper than St Anton !!They also have Table Service Restaurant.

Griabli does very good value Tágesgericht (Dish of the Day) Week days Only..

For folks complaining about the huge size of the Portions..... Its has always been possible to order a half portions in the Moose... They do not advertisie it.... as atvnearly half price food it means less of a Tip !!

Hotel Post , Berghaus , Hospiz Alm, Bifang, plus nearly all others .. The Goulash Soup just comes out of a tin or concentrated (more profit) !!!

https://www.unileverfoodsolutions.at/product/knorr-meisterkessel-gulaschsuppe-2-9-kg-9000275735103.html
https://www.felix.at/fileadmin/user_upload/felix/footer/gastronomie/Sortimentsfolder.pdf

Just 5 minute detour
If you really want to save money... jump off the Hill at NassereinBahn (valley) and walk down to the bakery in the Nasserein Car Park ... You can get reasonable fresh sandwich & a Hot or Cold drink and still get change from €10 ... Can sit out on the terrace on a nice sunnny day..

Back on the hill in no time at all..

Why not try the Greek resturant in the Hotel Alpinhof (bus 3 stops right outside) or the Lorenz Restaurant in the Arlhome (Gastigweg) These are good and way cheaper than in the centre

You forgot to mention the "THE BIG MOOOOOOOOSI" a giant burger with a 3L glass of Weißbier all for only €198,76, I wonder how many of those they sell?. Perhaps when the beer googles kick in after a number of Fliegender Hirsch chasers it seems like a bargain!

I've seen one ordered by 4 guys who shared it, they still didn't finish it. Its big enough for about 6 people to share, in which case I suppose the price becomes more reasonable.

I just checked the date on some photos I have, it was 22nd Feb 2020 a short time before the first covid wave kicked off and they were all drinking out of the same 3L glass and passing it around to anyone else who wanted to try it. I wonder if any of them got ill afterwards.

Not everyone wants to eat schnitzel mit pommes every day. As it turns out, that steakhouse was exceptionally good and deserves the accolade.

It however should not concern you, @Langerzug until/if you actually come here to ski. If you, just go somewhere else to eat.

Well, Germanic cuisine already is rather meaty, can't really see what Argentine beef adds to the scene. Especially since nowadays trend is so much focussed on being and eating local...It needs to come a long way, from Argentina.... Puzzled
And apart from that, from reading the replies, there is not much else coming up. I've heard of some nicer options in Stuben. Maybe after all we just indeed have to stick to the Vorarlberg-side....

@Langerzug, Basecamp directly opposite the Galzigbahn is supposed to do decent pasta, has table service though there is music (fairly restrained during the day). It is also more expensive than Lech €13 for a cappuccino & water as opposed to €9 at the Tannberghof, no bright yellow convertible Porsches cruising up & down the road outside though Smile Normally lots of Dutch folk.

Peruvian cuisine: possibly the most underrated. Includes Ceviche (fish), imaginative dishes with avocado, lomo saltado (beef), rocoto peppers, cuy, potato dishes of course. Despite using chilles, the flavours tend to be subtle. Had the cuy just the once not sure I'd have again though! But wonderful ceviche, yep that does it.
Not tried the Andino, a bit pricey maybe.

@Markymark29, thanks. My bad. I was told it was Argentinian, but it is indeed Peruvian. Regardless, it was fabulous. The rib eye was ordered rare, and it was cooked to perfection - so tender and a lovely crust from the BBQ. My Wife pronounced her pork ribs were equally good. There was a nice buzz in the room - it gave the feeling of people enjoying themselves, while not intruding on our conversation. It is wonderful that St Anton has places of this calibre.

Today was warm, as was forecast. Best skiing is obviously in the morning. I am seriously thinking of downloading at the end of the day… the valley run, especially below Osthang, is a sloppy, crowded mess. A good place to get injured.

Our group did Valluga North with the guide today. Great guy, Lukas. It was very good, a little hard for the 3 snowboarders (myself included) but very smooth for the other 2 skiers.

Tomorrow Rendl at 8.45, maybe doing the off piste route.

From that description - Rib eye, BBQ, pork ribs, the cuisine IS Argentinian not Peruvian. Could be Peruvian managed but not Peruvian cuisine.
I will call in and find out for myself.
But for genuine Peruvian cuisine in London check out "Lima" and "Cerviche".

Of course tourists have allowed catering business to lower their standards and sell frozen Wienerschitzel produced from Pork, Chicken even Turkey.

However have you heard of Vienna's most famous dish and its NOT Wienerschitzel which really originates from the Milan area of Italy and should NEVER be served with Pommes/Frittes Ketchup/Mayo .. ONly should be served with Potato Vinegrette Salad (not the German style ) or pietersielie kartoffel with preiselbeeren...

This is what you should be requesting

Tradtional Vieneese Tafelspitz

There is a story that the recipe for Schnitzel was bought back to Vienna by Marshal Radetzky (of Radetzky March fame) after his successful campaigns in northern Italy in the mid 19th century ie cotoletta alla milanese however this seems highly likely to be a myth though there have been much culinary mixing between the lands north and south of the alps over the centuries. German speaking peoples have long been fascinated by the Land where the lemon trees grow so copying a breaded chop would make sense. I had long thought Wiener Schnitzel was a Jewish dish (clearly not the modern pork & chips version) simply because of its popularity in Kosher restaurants, though it seems it was just popular with, the then, large Viennese Jewish population.

Not sure this has anything to do with skiing in the Arlberg!

Snow seems a bit firmer today, except for a few pitches that have had the full force of the sun and traffic. It is still very warm in the sun. Valfagehr (first thing) was nice, as were Balmen, Zürsertali, and Stuben. Schindlerkar was okay, but we only got onto it at 1pm.

..true. It is but a truck stop on Hwy 101 to Warth/Schröcken! Toofy Grin Seriously, it is usually the first to cook off as the weather warms. Many runs look quite caffè latte. Madloch-Zug must be very sketchy: the warning has been changed from “partially groomed, possibly some stones” to something like: “many stones, few snow”.

I skied it on Saturday, the top section was good as was, surprisingly, the bottom. The middle bit was not so good large areas of mud & stones but you could ski around them though I thought that what snow cover existed was pretty thin, it doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight so it might be OK for a while yet. It was a lot better than the last bit of the Osthang behind the Sennhütte.

Consensus between multiple forecast sites seems to be 20-30cm, though some are suggesting little precipitation.

Great skiing this morning - nice grippy surface and quiet. Foggy over in Zürs, which kept the soft Zürsians Toofy Grin inside - on the first lap of Zürsertali, I did not sight another person from the time I left Seekopf unload until the end of the tuck back into Zürs. Not looking optimistic on the snow front. The forecast on the St Anton site suggests "Weak snowfall may temporarily occur" which is pretty much in line with the various models. Looks like a retour d'est in the southern alps but not much on the north side. Seems likely to be dry for the next 10 days or so but we can always hope for a change! Currently no sign that the SSW event is bringing winter weather to the alps.
