Anyway ..downtown St Anton is History... It really began the final closing down 10 years ago
It all happens now (& will grow) in Nasserein..
I have not seen anything new in Nasserein, certainly not bars, or similar. It is largely a quiet, residential/accommodation area, apart perhaps from the area around N’Bahn valley station. Odd place to centre your hospitality business growth. On what do you base your comment, @stanton?
The crowds have arrived and thus it will be for the next month.
The mild weather has also arrived and it looks to be with us for at least a week. No significant cooling in the 7 day local forecast. The snow on pistes getting significant sun radiation, like Kandahar and Nasserein, has changed. Still, we have snow, sun, and we are skiing… so what’s not to like!?!
14 Feb Update: spring has sprung - well & truly! Very warm today. Bluebird and no wind, but the sun has really done a job on the snow. Slush on south-facing slopes. Caffè latte pistes in Lech. Best snow & skiing was in Warth.
damn... I reckon next week will be terrible in terms of snow quality.

@nunex, don’t stress! There is plenty of great skiing. ATM, you are exchanging skiing powder for skiing on fabulous spring days, like today: bluebird and no wind. The mountains and and the sky today looked like a Hollywood sound stage - almost too perfect!
Got a completely empty Valfagehr first thing, an almost empty Balmen, an empty Langer Zug - all offered splendid skiing.
Our group hired a guide and helicopter for the week of 18th.
I hope it all goes well...
They only 2 peaks in thw whole of Austria Heli Skiing is permiited ( TWO TO MANY ) .. Schneetäli & Mehlsack both are in the Arlberg (Vorarlberg state)
These two Peaks get skied out very quick. Apart from the Local guests they bring in guests from allover especially from Silvretta (Ischgl)
There is a Huge Lobby Group pushing for the final elimination (Vorarlberg) in Austria ... It used to be allowed in Tirol but was banned over 25 years ago ..
THe current permit was ONLY granted until 2024 not the Full five years as before ..
Helicopters should only banned for essential rescue & medical situations ....

@stanton, don't you really have the slightest hunch that your repeated 'earn your turns' in a forum devoted to an extremely touristic-region, 99% based on lift-serviced skiing, is extremely rude?
And completely schizophrenic coming from someone living/working in that region, and hence equally personally dependent on that same lift-serviced tourism? Or what else?

Whichever weather forecast you think is correct it looks like some snow Sunday afternoon , staying fairly mild so maybe rain in the valleys. Looks like colder and more snow later in the week

After 14 days the weather changed
Above sleet, below drizzle. 7 degrees in the valley.
+1.5C Galzig
+7 C in Town.
Trust the Local ..
The earlier predicted snow for Sunday by Pichler (the local meteo guy) has changed to hardly any precipitation and next week will return High Pressure system with temps öf +10C !!!
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

There were snow flurries on and off this morning. Surprisingly good skiing up on Galzig. Gampen / Kapall less so - plenty of death cookies. Called it a day around 1pm when the snow got too sticky to be fun.
Sunshine forecast for tomorrow.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@nunex, rather damp in the village this evening hopefully that will be snow higher up though it is pretty mild, forecast tomorrow sunshine The mild weather is forecast to stay until Wednesday then much cooler.

are they using snow cannons down low during the night?
Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
No snow making, AFAIK, the last few nights - at least down low. We can hear those guns from our apartment.
Interesting… the snow guns have been removed from the final, steep pitch on Valfagehr. They were running pretty much continuously during January. Over in Lech, a large number of guns have been shifted to a storage area near the Fun Park, near the Schlegelkopfbahn. Likewise in Zürs, it looks like a bunch are in the area next to the old base station of the former Hexenböden 1 lift. Assuming no one seriously believes a big snow dump is on the cards anytime soon, what is the explanation? Run out of budget? Belief that it will remain too warm to make snow? I am having dinner with some local friends on Tuesday; I will ask the question.

They may already have made enough snow to last the rest of the season?
It costs them money to make more snow than they need. They may have to clear the runs by a certain date to allow grazing in the early summer.
I think they can accurately detect snow depth under their piste bashers these days and will probably have lots of data about how much snow is needed on each slope to last until mid April.
In the Dolomites I think the target depth is about 60cms on the piste. They usually finish the main snow making phase by the end of December and remove all their temporary fan guns by early January.
It seems that two feet of compressed artificial snow is enough to last the season on many aspects as long as it is groomed regularly

The one at the top of Valfagehr is well down, and it stopped “boiling” many weeks ago. I always assumed that the bubbling water was due to water being pumped in from somewhere, but presumably ultimately the Rosanna. The reservoir under the Schindlergratbahn was maybe half full a week or 2 ago, but I haven’t really taken much notice of it.

I think the boiling's just to stop the water freezing - I've seen ones which are quite full but still have (presumably) aeration bubbles

Railway tunnel Ischgl – St. Anton am Arlberg as a vision
WK (Chamber of Commerce) district chairman Michael Gitterle presented his visions for mobility – a rail connection Landeck-Scuol (Switzerland) and Ischgl-St. Anton am Arlberg.
Gitterle then announced a vision for further traffic defusing at the New Year's reception. A 14-kilometre-long tunnel under the Fatlarspitze from Ischgl to St. Anton would connect Paznaun to the railway. WK President Walser added that he had such aT unnel variant Ischgl-St. Anton am Arlberg as a project for the future.

Seriously warm today. Not sure what temp it hit, but it was 5C on the Seekopf at 5pm.
The best skiing was (obviously) early in the morning, with Valfagehr (on first lifts at 8:30), Balmen, and Zürsertali. By lunchtime, the Zürs pistes were heavy slush, with Velcro snow on the bottom third. Finished the day on Stuben and then Kandahar.
We could certainly use a good freeze to dry out the snow. The Snow-Forecast website is predicting snow for later next week, but the Arlberg website disagrees, saying it will remain mild. Tomorrow’s forecast is cloudy, with some precipitation - given the temps, if any of it is white, then it will be high up.
Today’s temps have caused the snow to markedly retreat. It was predominantly white in the Stanzertal yesterday; that is no longer the case this afternoon. A number of runs in Lech looked decidedly caffè latte from the Seekopfbahn. The bottom slopes in StA…

So almost exactly 3 years to the day after this with the first rumours if the apocalypse floating around
I got back to take another photo (slightly different spot, not such good snow, new lift)
It was an excellent day's skiing, the sunny side of Zürs provided perfect uncrowded piste skiing until around 11:00. Then Madloch which was perfectly OK though definitely a ski route not a piste, the middle section was pretty scrapped and brown though the two steep bits at the bottom were absolutely fine. Lech was pretty spring like but no shortage of snow. Back to Zürs for Täli which was as good as always. Then over towards St Anton with the plan to do Schindlerkar a couple of times but got to the lift to discover it had just closed (lifty said there were 80 km/h winds at the top which was making it impossible to ski, no more than a stiff breeze lower down). Kandahar was good, moguls soft & friendly. Home run at the bottom of the Osthang was the usual chaos, lots of folk floundering around in piles of soft snow, decided to use the ski route to avoid the chaos which was a mistake as not a lot of snow (perhaps best not to ignore the "closed" sign!).
The Moose was as ever though got the feeling not quite as crowded as previously, a number of old timers at the bar wishing they were still young enough to dance on tables (including me!)
DJ Gerhard (or his son no idea which of them it is) leading the chorus to Sweet Caroline
I too was struck by the amount of green directly above the village, looking out the train window on the journey along the Inntal it seemed more like mid / late March than mid February, no snow at valley level until the Stanzertal and even then not much.

@munich_irish, Mooser, and Heustadl & SennHütte for that matter, did seem quiet this afternoon, but then again it is still changeover day for many. They were certainly heaving during last week’s burst of kaiserwetter!
Actually, the whole place was fairly quiet today. No real queues to speak off, except maybe a 5 min wait on Seekopfbahn around 10:30 - 11:00. Got onto the second gondola out of Galzigbahn this morning when it opened, nobody at Arlenmähder, and 2 people standing around the Flexenbahn load.

@nunex, Rendl, though it will be in the shade first thing. Schindler or Kapall might also be good choices - for altitude.
At 6:30am, this morning, it is 2C on the Galzig and 4.6C in StC!

@kitenski, yes Monday & Tuesday look to be mild & sunny, cooler with some possible snow after that. Snow is fine, sitting having a coffee at Base Camp nice all the way down, no off piste though. Schindler closed due to high winds

@Markymark29, no panicking at all, just reporting what I see on GFS. March continues to offer some potentially cold and snowy conditions, but could also be the opposite!!
A pretty good couple of days, today turned out better than expected as the sun came out at lunchtime and the morning crowds disappeared. Snow is good considering the temperatures, soft yes but I didnt come across any slush. Even so this is not a "normal" mid winter in the Arlberg. Standing on the platform waiting for the train home it was rather strange looking at the slopes above the village to see the amount of brown & green. Platti has never opened (it relies on natural snow) and, I presume, wont open as there is no base more bare patches than snow. The linking pistes / paths lower down were white ribbons across the hillside. Further afield Madloch whilst skiable has a good deal of earth and stones in the middle section. Even if there is a change in the weather (some snow is forecast from the middle of next week) the lack of a base for any areas without snow making means that many such runs will be sketchy at best. I would be sure that there is enough snow to keep the pistes going until the 22nd of April but the Arlberg is so much more than the pistes.
@Langerzug, The images are pretty representative of St Anton yesterday though I didnt feel it was as crowded as it seems from the report (though finding somewhere to sit at lunchtime was not easy). I practically always avoid the Steissbachtal it is too narrow for the number of people using it, Kandahar was an easy and fairly uncrowded ski, folk are put off because it is graded "black" but with reasonable snow it is not difficult. "Arlberg Fan" posts a lot of good images and accurate reports, I believe he works for the Lech tourist office?
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

With a bit of local knowledge and experience, it is not too hard to avoid the worst of the crowds, even on a week like this one.

@munich_irish,
yep, Arlbergfan works for Lech Tourism.
Since Flexenbahn, we still have to do the Run of Fame (or rather Lech-Rendl-Lech)
It's these images, and the lack of nice restaurants that is putting us off....Any suggestions for nicer restaurants (not too busy, real chairs instead of benches, no loud music etc.) on the St.Anton side?
Looking to come end of March, hopefully that helps (and the snow lasts...)

@Langerzug, Despite the images I thought the snow (from a skiing perspective) was better in St Anton over the weekend than in Lech (Zürs better than both) but as you know conditions vary every day so no guide to the end of March!. As@ulmerhutte, pointed out the worst of the crowds can be avoided (the pistes and lifts are quiet between 12 - 2). The worst of the crowds are usually on the Steissbachtal and the follow on home run under the Galzig gondola. Personally I think a better option is to go towards Nasserein (the first part of Fang is not open this year, a consequence of the ski racing), keep to the right hand side on the steeper part of the black/red and turn right before the end onto the blue track which heads towards Galzig which brings you out just above the lifts. Cant help with restaurants I dont like table service (waste of skiing time) and prefer a skiwasser and maybe a small bowl of pasta which I know is not typical of Lech (Gault Millau ratings dont mean anything ). The only non company self service / apres ski spot that I can think off is the Bifang Alm on the run down from Rendl, no idea if any good though.

Just been skiing Schindlerkar… ski straight onto the Schindlergratbahn, no waiting.
Had to come inside to cool off and get some water. What a change from a week or so ago!
Spoke to a local ski instructor/guide, who has lived here all this life, and he agreed that this is one of the lightest seasons in memory.
Upmarket mountain restaurants? Not sure, as we too like to grab something quick and easy - the day is for skiing. I suspect there might be something in StC, given the nature of the place. The Verwall Stube positions itself as one. There maybe something in Dorfstraße that fits the bill, eg one of the 5* hotels. I like the restaurant behind the church in Stuben, but have not been there this year.
