The 'new' one on the piste. I believe Joan retired at the end of last season, unless anyone knows differently. I used to go the other old one too before it closed and converted to apartments And I believe there was another one out of town before that but that was before my time.

Epic day today.
Galzig, just now, has around ~165cm, meaning the storm has delivered about 40cm so far. The winds gusted to 60+km/hr, which probably helped to keep the crowds down. As expected, all the upper lifts were closed, including those at the top of Galzig, ie Zammermoos, Osthang, St Christoph, and Tanzböden. Valfagehr was also closed, along with Steissbachtal.
The snow was splendid fun to ski, but did pack down quickly.
A postcard from St Anton:
Fun on the Fang race track, which remained lightly skied until the end of the day:
Kandahar was quiet in the afternoon:

Wow, Kandahar looks so flat and easy terrain in that picture. As everyone here will know, the reality is steeper and mogully (most of the time)

Kandahar is not a hard black. It is a genuine black, but it is definitely a lot easier than most blacks in e.g. Les Arcs or Alpe d'Huez. In a mostly South facing resort though, Kandahar kinda faces North, and so usually has among the best snow on any piste in St Anton, so is deservedly a firm favourite with most

Yes I know the Kandahar run well, it used to be red number 2 in the old days, then it got upgraded to black number 2 before the big renumbering scheme a few years ago.
I really like the run even when its full of moguls, but the picture makes it look more like a blue run than black (or even red !)

I didn't even know it was once a red. I think it would have potential to be a hard red, often the visibility is not great, I assume the black grading is partly to discourage non proficient skiers using it as alternative to carnage that is Happy Valley, and there is potential for long slide when icy. Usually a lovely run but can imagine it not being pleasant at all when crowded (like Ischgl red run to valley). Basically I agree with black classification, but it is on easy side of spectrum of blacks for sure

It is all relative. Kandahar first thing in the morning, on fresh groomed dry snow, few people, and good visibility is a doddle for any reasonable intermediate. Start varying those parameters and it becomes something quite different.
Today… the main lifts opened late, which lead to insane queues. At N’Bahn, the stairs queue and the escalator queue had merged, and stretched across the forecourt. The Galzig queue stretched past the end of the Gampen, which was ½ way over to the beginner lift. We decamped to Fangbahn. The queues cleared a little after 10am.
The wind has kicked in again. Kapall has apparently just closed.

How do you think the conditions for off-piste will look like at the beginning of next week?
Fresh snow fell yesterday (there is confusion how much actually - 25cm? 40cm?), some more is forecast for tomorrow and Sunday but not much more. However I can see that temperatures are above zero at village level so there is a risk of crust forming on the powder at least in lower parts (but no sun so maybe not?).
Avalanche risk at official site for Voralrberg https://warnung.vorarlberg.at/vtgdb/dist/index.html#//lwd_lagebericht_de.html says it's level 2/3 but skiarlberg.at website says it's 4.

Kandahar is quite steep on the right hand side mid section the left not so, the moguls at the bottom can grow to impressive sizes which can be intimidating for some. What makes it fairly easy is it is so wide a narrower but less steeps run would be more difficult. Usually good snow so nice to ski. All round almost always preferable to the crowds and occasional want to be racer on the Steissbachtal

Snowing at a reasonable rate at the moment. Cannot tell how much came down during the night - the deck is now completely covered from previous falls. A far cry from when we arrived and there was no snow in the village.
Avi Risk 4. I feel a delayed start coming up.

Official
Current conditions
While a high from the west will settle down in low air layers over Middle Europe, a brisk northerly current is still located in the high air layers over the Alps. Consequently, a significant weather improvement is not expected yet. Sunny conditions on Sunday morning will be replaced by cloud banks from the north in the afternoon and weak snowfall will set in again towards the evening. The current will increasingly veer to the east until Monday, consequently residual low stratus will still be pushed to the valleys. However, sunny spells are expected again especially in the mountains. The influence of high-pressure will further increase towards Tuesday, whereby the air will further dry off and mostly perfect sunshine is forecast for the rest of the week. The temperatures will remain wintry cold despite long sunny spells.

@ulmerhutte, crazy eh?! if they have little respect for their own lives at least they should respect the lives of people who have to potentially rescue and are put at unnecessary risk.

@Markymark29, by the sound of things it is too dangerous for the mountain rescue folks to go near. When it is a case of being unlucky it is understandable. On a day like today Schöngraben is a death trap, beyond comprehension why folk risk their lives and also those who are tasked with fishing out their bodies. The mountain is always there tomorrow, maybe it is part of the getting old thing but sure I was never that stupid.

It feels like this storm cycle is pretty much done. From memory, Galzig had something like 125cm before the storm; the indicated depth today is 175cm, so we got ~50cm. Not game changing, but certainly freshened up the place.
Quite warm today. First time I have sweated in quite some time! Fun skiing: the bumps were quite forgiving, with the Schöngraben piste being the pick for us.
Not many people out, despite maybe 8 - 10 coaches in the EWA and Ost Terminal carparks, and the day car parks being full.

Any forecast for more snow until the 18th Feb? I've seen some charts in Wetterzentrale and they seem to suggest some precipation for that time. But I believe it's way to early to predict something.

I simply can't believe that people are going into Schöngraben when we have level 4. They seem to be taking leave of their senses. Today someone was also killed in Kleinwalsertal, skiing a run from Walmendingerhorn to Ifen that is known as an avalanche zone. He was out on his own in a storm with zero viz at level 4. I mean, WTF?

It appears almost certain that 2 people died in the Schöngraben/Törli area:
| Quote: |
The situation was sometimes so delicate that the rescuers had to stop their missions. At around 10.30 a.m. in St. Anton am Arlberg , two people were buried by an avalanche. As the police announced in the evening, it is a 29-year-old local ski guide and a 33-year-old guest from Austria. A 64-year-old, who had skied with the two of them in the open ski area, escaped the avalanche. He made the emergency call and was rescued unharmed by the ambulance helicopter.
The search for the buried victims had to be interrupted around 11 a.m. because the area was at risk of avalanches. However, the avalanche beeper was located during a helicopter overflight. Despite the explosions, the situation was still considered too dangerous to continue the search on the ground. Another attempt is to be made on Sunday from 7.30 a.m. |
That’s from https://www.tt.com/artikel/30845151/zahlreiche-lawinen-in-tirol-ein-toter-im-zillertal-verschuettete-in-st-anton
It is hard to comprehend the thought process that lead to a guide taking people into that area on Av Risk 4. There were many slides, albeit some triggered by the cannons, in the Mattun area. If Av Risk 4 did not faze them, then surely the sight of the slides should have made for pause to re-evaluate plans to go into the Törli. RIP
