@Toadman, its the getting old thing, I need a rest after a couple of hours but yes lunch is generally a good time to ski.

Haha! I rode the lift with a senior citizen yesterday, and he qualified for the senior citizen season pass this year, which he was happy about. But he also said the same thing about the legs not lasting as long. I'm starting to understand that sentiment myself!

@munich_irish, great photos.
It has been a seriously 7 days, but that has meant some delightfully dry snow. It has also meant quiet afternoons, with seemingly many electing to enjoy long lunches or early retirement to a warm bar somewhere.
It looks like another busy week coming up. So much for quiet January this year.

Epic day in the powder at Zürs. Sunshine, no wind, and much more pleasant temperatures (-7C) on the Galzig.
Bachseite was also fun to ski.
Alas, the crowds are certainly here. In “normal” years, this would be a relatively quiet week. Not so this year. It is as busy as it usually is at Half-Term or Fasching. Large groups of Brits and Italians. Oddly, given the winter they are having over there, quite a few Americans.

Any idea why St Anton is so busy this year ? I recently booked for the first week in March and there seemed to be a lot less accommodation available than usual for that week.

@nunex, Saturday no queues at all, Sunday a short queue first thing at the Nassereinbahn, Schindler was a bit slow but other than that no queues. I noticed a good few Americans too. I suspect most places are busier than "normal" folk want to go skiing after two years of the zombie apocalypse.

I think that is probably the strongest driver. St Anton, by many accounts, is doing very well compared to others, in what is arguably a low snow year (so far, anyway).
I also think that pent-up demand from the covid years is probably a driver. That was almost certainly the case in Australia last season and could well be a factor here.

@JohnS4, 1st week of March is very much high season and a holiday week for The Netherlands and Hamburg (and affluent Hamburg the 2nd city of Germany, after not so affluent Berlin). And Hamburgers love Arlberg (but Lech more than St.Anton)

Looks like I'll be there with a bunch of my buddies that week. Looking forward to it, though I was hoping for less crowds, tbh. Fingers crossed

There's nothing arguable about it. It's been a really low, slow snow year until all of about 10 days ago.... and depths are still way below averages for this time of year and it's scratchy. So evidentially, empirically & scientifically this is a low snow year to date.

After 2 beautiful sunny days, there is heavy overcast this morning. Double-digit negative temps have returned and there is a faint trace of new snow on the deck.
The local forecast mentions north-westerly flows for early next week - for the first time since we arrived almost 4 weeks ago. That is a promising sign for better snowfalls.

@Markymark29, today’s Arlberg website forecast has pushed back the snowfall to Wednesday. It was predicted to be Monday/Tuesday. Fingers crossed Wednesday comes off - we could really use a little freshen up of the pistes and the off piste.
That said, the cover is still pretty good, albeit quite icy once the corduroy has been skied off. One notable exception: Madloch - Zug, which is currently a good run for restructuring your bases.
It is certainly cold today! The fog/mist makes it seem colder than the indicated -11C.

Both Henri @ Wepowder https://wepowder.com/en/forum/topic/287330 and the GFS ensemble are suggesting reasonable falls at the end of the week keeping cold too
The heaviest falls are likely to be further east which might redirect some of the crowds away from the Arlberg

Looking great for our early March week if this arrives. Overdue, but looks like winter’s finally on.
@Blanch1962, I’d suggest diverts will be inevitable.

@Blanch1962, the most likely diversion would be to Munich but more likely the flights would be cancelled. The airlines and the airport will be able to judge a good few hours in advance if there is going to be so much snow to prevent airfield operations. Given the forecast Munich is likely to have snow too. Whilst things dont come a halt around here when someone in the control tower spots a single snowflake the runways have to be clear of snow and there comes a point when there is so much coming down that it is not possible to keep open which then causes chaos.

@Blanch1962, They don't always divert, sometimes they just sit it out on the ground in the UK. I would stuff your pockets with snacks and have a good book to hand – it could be a while. Snow isn't often a major problem – fog is probably a more regular closer of runways around here – but if a huge quantity of snow comes in a short time, then it will affect all transport. Last time that happened was 2019 I think.

hello - apologies if this is the wrong thread....half term in Stuben with another family and similar group in Nasserein who we will want to ski with - where's our highest point for a lift free ski home at the end of the day to Stuben? is it the top of the Valfegher chair? secondly - I am by far the weakest skier in the whole group so thought I might start the day with an instructor and meet them for lunch - their skiing is always gentler in the afternoon(!) have I left it too late to find someone for half term week - and do any of the local experts amongst the snowHeads know of someone I should seek out? many thanks - oh finally - Am assuming st Anton to Stuben post apres means a taxi? ball park figures for how much that will set back the bank of mum and dad? thanks

@sarahklt, The highest point to get back to Stuben is pretty much the highest point of the ski area Schindler Spitze (getting back to Nasserein needs a lift or a bus). However you might find the top part of the run a bit much if you are tired (it is a reasonably steep red though it is usually in good condition, its not scary, probably easier to ski than the crowded St Anton home run) so maybe better to use the Valfagehr lift / run though that does have a reputation for being cut up in the afternoon so probably a good idea to allow plenty of time. Depending on what time you leave St Anton you might be able to use the postbus to Lech https://www.st-anton.at/fileadmin/user_upload/linie760_VB.pdf it doesn't go to Stuben but does stop at Alpe Rauz so potentially you could carefully ski down from there (officially the pistes close at 17:00). That costs a couple on Euros.

@sarahklt, I'd contact ski school Arlberg, they will be able to advise availability re ski school teachers availability. Regards highest point, as @munich_irish, mentions it's top of Schindler. The top pitch (after this initial slope often moguls it turns left down a steep wide piste) can be quite icy but stick to the sides of this bit of piste and you'll be fine, OK after that......usually plenty of powder at the sides to turn on. Enjoy!
Re taxis, all will take you back but i'd pre-book. it won't be cheap, i'd suggest 30-35 EUR. Dont ski down from Rauz after 5pm, the piste bashers groom the run from Stuben to Rauz and there's no way off that piste at the sides, steep cliffs on one side and mountain at the other - very dangerous place to be in the dark with a pisten-bully team approaching I'd suggest.
