There is some kind of womens ? World Cup race next mon/Tues. Does anyone know anything about this? Will some slopes be closed and less available to ski? Will it be super crowded?

@Snowysarah, Women’s FIS Downhill and Super G, followed by 2 weeks of Junior World Cup. The Nasserein piste is closed.
Not sure about the “waist deep” powder(?). @scorpio, you are not an Irish Leprechaun?

Is it just one piste? A reason to go elsewhere?

@Snowysarah, it does impact sections of few more pistes on the Kapall & Gampen. Usually the impact is minimal, but the low snow base makes it a bit more problematic. Hopefully the snow of the last 24 hours will make it possible to again ski down to Nasserein, but I did not go over to that side of the mountain today and so cannot judge.
A reason to go elsewhere? Nope. Plenty of other options. The crowds will be over watching the race and not skiing.

Up until yesterday, some of the lower slopes were still grass or close to it.
We had significant snowfall overnight, plus high winds in the morning, which lead to the upper mountain being closed because of avi risk and/or impact on lift ops.

San Antonio Pizzeria on Nassereinerstraße is worth a visit. More than just pizzas, but the pizzas are very good.
Theo’s is across the road from San Antonia, but I have not eaten there.
The Rodelstall, at the end of Nassereinerstraße, was brilliant but, since it was taken over by Anthony’s, the reports have been less than flattering.
For a special night out, there is Tenne. It is towards St Jakob and best to get a taxi. Traditional Austrian food, local ingredients, cooked exceptionally well.
Cafe Restaurant Pete, above Sport Pete, in the Dorfstrasse was very good. Have not yet been this year.

@Chick, The pizzeria is good , it is often busy but they will try to squeeze you in but best to book.
Have eaten in Theo's (they show UK football) standard burger & chips sort of thing.
There is a public bar in the Nasseriner Hof which does standard Austrian fare (more lively bar in the basement).
The Mondshein Stuberl is drinks only (maybe frozen pizza) no loud music.
There is a kebab/pizza take away opposite the lift station maybe there are a couple of tables inside.
My personal favourite eating spot is Skiing Buddha in the sports centre next to the train station, again it gets busy so you might need to book, does decent Thai food finding a good curry makes a change from pig & dumplings!

Any tips for some decent apres in town besides the 2 obvious ones on the hill.

@Chick, I am afraid not much help with apres spots as I prefer a quiet beer & a book these days! The Murrmel bar with Gunnar is popular with some (though not sure if Gunnar is still going). I would avoid Bar Cuba went in once to watch football and would not want to go back far too "brit" orientated was a bit like being in a run down south London pub!. Not sure what time Base Camp (by the Galzig lift) goes to but no need to ski home!

Murrmel like everywhere last year was relatively quiet as subject to the early closing curfew in place (Closure at 10 IIRC) but can recommend it
Gunnar didn't play last year as there was a ban on live music too, an only piped music was allowed, not sure if he is back this year.
@Chick, there are a group of us going from the 21st Jan - 4th Feb, welcome to meet up for a drink/food if you want - we are staying all over STA and I'm Garni Feuerstein in Nasserein

If the train is from the Airport then yes. If from HBf probably not.
|
|
|

It's from HB. According to Gmaps its like 10 to 15 minutes from airport to the the HBf by car.
Guess I'm screwed then...

@nunex, possible, but very tight. The 3 variables are: time to get your luggage, how long you have to wait to get the train to the HB, and whether that train comes into the underground platforms or the mainline, upstairs platforms.
For reference, last week our plane scheduled to land at 7:50am, but actually landed at 7:25am. We made the 8:40 train with 10 mins to spare. Two of the above 3 variables went our way: luggage came off as we walked into the baggage carousel area and then the train to the HB came within a minute of getting to the platform.

No luggage at all. I’ll have to fly to Barcelona mid week and come back to st Anton so I’ll just have a backpack with me.
And I’ll be getting a taxi or something to the HBf to be quicker.

@nunex, no the weather thread is elsewhere this is anything Arlberg related. Do you mean the train is leaving Zürich HbF at 20:40 or the train from the airport? If the HbF that seems awfully tight, assuming you have baggage the chances of being through in under 30 minutes is not good even assuming the flight is on time. Zürich airport is not too big and pretty efficient in my experience but the chances of you making that train are slim think you need to either find a hotel, dig deep to pay for a transfer or hire a car

Thank you @ulmerhutte and @munich_irish.
I won't be travelling with luggage, its a mid week flash trip to Barcelona for business matters (right in the middle of my vacations).
Assuming the plane arrives on schedule (its Vueling and low costs tend to be tight on their schedules as they have to pay a lot for delays) it will be just a matter of getting out of the plane, out of the airport, grabbing a taxi and going to the HBF. All in 45 minutes, give it or take.
I'll try my luck as I have no other options for now.

@nunex, I doubt a taxi will be quicker Swiss roads are slow with lots of traffic lights etc. If there is a connection you will almost certainly be better with that. If Vueling uses the same terminal as Swiss etc you are probably OK as it is not a long walk to get out. I believe the low cost airlines use another terminal further away

@nunex, I too doubt a taxi will be faster. How about before you travel, get onto the SBB site and get a list of trains/times for ZRH-HBf around your arrival time. You can then judge if you can get a train quickly or there will be a 10+ min wait. If the latter, then maybe chance a taxi? BTW: I am not aware of any trains to St Anton that depart from ZRH.
It rained quite heavily yesterday evening. The temps have now dropped and there is a trace of sleety snow on the deck, but a net loss. Since I arrived back in StA, I have found the Arlberg website forecasts, ie https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/en/weather-report , to be reasonably accurate. They have certainly been more on the ball than those predicting big dumps over the last 2 weeks.
Skiing yesterday was very good. Snow remained dry for most of the day. Skied over to Warth/Schröcken yesterday. The place was eerily deserted. All but the Sonnencruiser lift running. Some pistes have not been formed. Had lunch at S1 in the Salober area. Prices up substantially, eg soup @ 9e and Käsespätlze @ 19e.

Yeah, there's three possibilities (four counting with the one that arrives a 5AM the other day, which is not really an option).
One at 20:08 and two at 20:15. The two at 20:15 are not daily so I guess I really have to try to get onboard of the 20:08 one in HBF rather than getting in it at the airport. 20:08 would be impossible by all means, I guess.
Well, many thanks everyone. I think I will end up having to rent a car and doing the 200km by myself.
If you guys happen to have other solutions, please advise. You can get it by DM to avoid cluttering the thread to others, if you want.
Cheers guys!

@nunex, you can include the fourth one leaving Hbf at 21.40 if you get off at Landeck and then get a taxi to Anton or get a friend to pick you up.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looks like the train that leaves Zurich bhf at 21:40 arrives at Feldkirchen @ 23:21 but doesn't depart Feldkirchen till 05:15. Arrives at St Anton 05:46.
Looks to me like this train doesn't run on Saturday nights and on certain dates (see below).
b = 11. Dec bis 29. Oct
Mo - Thu, So
not 25. Dez, 5. Jan, 9., 30. Apr, 17., 28. Mai, 7. Jun, 14. Aug, 25. Ok
It might be easier to use the Austrian train app to work out which trains are best.
https://www.oebb.at/en/fahrplan/fahrplanauskunft/scottymobil
It might even be worth staying over somewhere on the way to St Anton (e.g. Feldkirchen / Bludenz / Landeck) and getting an early train the next day.
